Joe Moore Award

I thought Oregon or maybe Utah would end up winning it. No complaints from me. Dunker, Stephens and Jones are all high level NFL draft picks…Pieper/Lauck are well on their way.

And they didn't even need a certain 5 star someone that chose to go to Bama instead to win it. As good as I'm sure he coulda been had he came here I think we dodged a bullet. Culture wise he obviously wasn't a fit and that woulda inevitably have became an issue. He did us a favor at the end of the day

I dont know. I think the coaches might have found a way to make him a useful member of the team.

Did anyone else think Dunker got slighted a bit? Maybe it was just me. But happy they got the team award. Hopefully it will help with recruiting even more.
From what I have read and heard on some podcasts, it sounds like he was pretty banged up this year, more than we knew about at the time. Could have held him back from reaching his full potential.

I don't know...I kind of like the idea of taking an OL with 3 All-Americans, and then adding another 1st team AA at our weakest position along that line (no offense to Lauck, he was plenty good in his own right and will be a future NFLer).

Culture eats strategy for breakfast, and all that, but strong culture can also take a talented square peg and figure out how to make it round. I am sure the right $ amount could have gotten him to stay, and he would have eventually found his footing here. Fun to think about the "what ifs", but alas, it was not meant to be.

We have not only developed a culture and reputation as NFL factory for quality linemen, but development. You see plenty of tight ends and even a quarterback that grow and develop under our coaches and become linemen. Joe Evans comes to mind from a quarterback at Ames High and Robert Gallery who was a tight end before converting to a tackle.

Iowa has a knack for taking multi-sport athletes that are 3 stars and making them into NFL draft pics. Many were also state qualifying wrestlers. Brandon Scherff was a state tennis player at Denison. Addison Ostrenga was actually going to play baseball and football at Iowa.

It goes a lot towards our strength and conditioning and having a keen eye for talent and potential.

Unrelated, but Scherff lives up here in my neck of the woods and I've seen him at a couple HS basketball games. He's already dropped about a hundred pounds by my estimate. Almost unrecognizable and looks/acts like any random 9-5'er you'd ever come across. Pretty happy for that guy.

I believe Marshall Yanda did something similar. Lost a ton of weight for health reasons.

Heckuva honor. Lots of OLines start out the season aiming to win the Joe Moore award. Having seen all 3 of the OLine finalists in-person at Kinnick this season, I probably would have given the edge to Oregon. But from a purely technique standpoint, hard to argue with the Iowa choice.
