I can't figure out what "mike" and "leo" and "will" mean. What the heck is with these nicknames?

C'mon guys, I'm too lazy to google it. What is the origin of these stupid LB monikers??

Mike is middle, will is weakside (same first letter). Not sure about leo, though. A lot of times it would be sam, meaning strongside. Maybe Leo is Norm's dog's name. ;)

Tks. Seems silly to me. What the heck was wrong with "LOLB" or "RILB" or whatever was used historically??

I think it is for those that have a monosyllabic vocabulary, in case we recruit anyone from south of I-80. ;) I've always known Mike (or Mac, Missle, etc) and Sam and Will. I did look and a lot of teams call their OLB Leo, but it is more of a hybrid person that lines up on the Line of scrimmage, at End or at OLB, hence the name LEO (line, end, lb).

Also, several teams have names for their strong safety, such as the hero at Penn State, and Rover at several other places. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

because it will change during the game. Leo or sam is the strong side which goes on the offense. On offense which ever side the TE lines up on is usually the strong side

and the leo and will- will shift to what side the strength is on. Will LB usually little bit smaller and quiker of a guy and Leo would be a little more stout to take the play head on
