I can't figure out what "mike" and "leo" and "will" mean. What the heck is with these nicknames?

Mike is middle, Will is weak, leo is strong side
Mike is middle, will is weakside (same first letter). Not sure about leo, though. A lot of times it would be sam, meaning strongside. Maybe Leo is Norm's dog's name.![]()
Tks. Seems silly to me. What the heck was wrong with "LOLB" or "RILB" or whatever was used historically??
because it will change during the game. Leo or sam is the strong side which goes on the offense. On offense which ever side the TE lines up on is usually the strong sideTks. Seems silly to me. What the heck was wrong with "LOLB" or "RILB" or whatever was used historically??
Easier to say?
probably
just another symbol of how lazy americans have become
Leo is used for linebackers born in August.
