This is a true travesty. Not only should the players be permanently banned from ever playing football again, there should be criminal charges against them. What the hell has happened to society behavior such as integrity and respect?

This beyond "assault". Any idiot can surmise that with 10+ pounds of protective equipment versus ZERO protective equipment, plus premeditation, plus blind-siding. plus spearing the official while defenseless...gets aggravated assault, at the minimum. Don't know how Texas on "attempted_____", but these players are, in the parlance of the book/movie, "Midnight Express", bad machines.

Simple banning isn't nearly enough punishment. There is something seriously wrong here aside from the obvious "sore-losers-and-maybe-a-coach-instigated-it".

How tough would it have been for BOTH players to simply walk off the field-or not even take the field-and explain their actions if a coach, indeed, put them up to it?

Societally, we can't even take the chance these two might reproduce (assuming the haven't, already).

This absolutely goes against my normally libertarian views but wow - this behavior
is the cherry-on-top of the mountain of facts that suggest maybe forced sterilization
should be a consideration in certain situations.

Of course, part of me was writing that in jest, but...I am absolutely dumbfounded by what those players did. I can't even fathom people that play football having that type of mindset.

These are two young high school football defensive backs. I'm pretty sure if they go to prison they will get speared quite a few times by their fellow inmates. It looks like they could very well end up there for a few months. The referee sounded like he wanted them to be punished to the utmost which is what they should be.

I really want to hear why they did this, then I want them punished, severely. I also would like to hear what the parents have to say.

This is so disturbing.

At first viewing I thought a person could argue that the first kid could have been running to the ball carrier, expected the ref to move, but he didn't so he collided. Obviously the second kid did target. But after the second viewing neither looks even close to "accidental".

I've played a lot of games with officials, in various sports in my younger days. I have never really been angry with an official, much less do him that kind of harm.
Reports say that the official DOES want to press charges. Both players have been suspended from the team and the school.

Good Lord, I seriously worry about the direction our society is headed. [smh]

Just a tad bit of overreaction... in many countries they stone people to death for half time entertainment.

Not to mention thousands of years of war, random and government and or religious sanctioned violence.

Yeah it was bad... but society isn't in danger.

I bet the coach set this up... the first one that hits him doesn't go full speed (but still a cowardly move)

The worse hit is when he is on the ground and the guy lowers his helmet... that one looked really bad.

Those two are done playing high school sports for their lives (most likely will get charged with assault as well).

If the coach was behind it... that team is prob done for the season.

If he set it up, the coach should be done in any type of coaching or teaching...if he wasn't involved, how can your players be so out of control?

As for the players, expect to see them in the police blotter again before they're 21. Obviously young men of high character.

Yeah the coach will be in a whole world of dung if they can prove he was behind it.

Hoping they play for "Mean Machine"

I'd read about this a few times so I should have been prepared for the video. Yet I wasn't. What in the hell goes through a kid's mind when deciding to blindside an adult (or anyone!) who is defenseless?

Did any of the other refs or authorities after the game talk to the kids involved to see if they were instructed to by coaches or what? It shouldn't take long to figure that out. Either the kids say the coaches did and then the coaches deny it and play he said he said or the two did it on their own. I don't know why days later that hasn't been figured out. Either way those kids playing days are long gone. Just a matter of is anyone else share blame.
