I don't have any true stats in front of me, but if this kid walks to Daddy Saban, how many 4 star or better guys will that have been under Coach I.M. Milquetoast that have left the state for "greener" pastures? Off the top of my head I have Adrian Arrington, Christian French, Amara Darboh. I understand why other coaches love Kirk, he keeps the games close and allows lesser opponents to win; and his recruiting is on par with his 4th down punt inside the 35 at Nebraska with nothing to lose in 2012. By that I mean sackless.
David Barrent as well. Arrington was a nice ball player as an upperclassman, but I don't think he would have changed the fate of Iowa football or anything. Barrent got injured. French was probably a man without a place in Iowa's schemes. Darboh would have been a nice to get, though. But the other 4 stars over the past few years, meh. Ferentz did manage to keep Derby close to home, though, despite bigger names looking for him. That was a coup. But it yielded exactly no on the field results for us.
I don't know that there is anyone who could coach at Iowa who could reasonably be expected to keep a majority of 4 stars home when they get offers from the likes of Oregon, Michigan or Alabama (and honestly, the recruiting feedback loop is such that getting those big name offers is what drives the stars to some extent). It's like blaming Tom Davis for losing a bunch of studs to Kansas. It ain't the coach's fault that our program is second tier.
