Phil Steele's Look at Iowa, the Big Ten

My favorite college football preview magazine has arrived on newsstands, at least in West Des Moines; Phil Steele’s annual tome is here.

Here is how Phil Predicts the Big Ten:

1. Ohio State
t2: Iowa
t2: Penn State
4: Wisconsin
t5: Michigan
t5: Michigan State
7: Northwestern
8: Illinois
9: Purdue
10: Indiana
11: Minnesota

Steele says this of Iowa: “Even though I pick them second, they may be favored in every game they play this year.â€

We shared Steele’s All Big Ten picks with you last week at this link.
Here are Steele’s unit rankings for Iowa in the Big Ten:

QB: 3
RB: 4
REC: 5
OL: 11
DL: 1
LB: 5
DB: 1
ST: 1

As we all know, the offensive line is going to be the difference between Iowa being an 8-4 team, or one that could go down in school history…with the injury bug always been the wildcard. Iowa has the fewest returning ‘offensive line starts’ according to Steele’s homework, and among the fewest of any program in the nation.

Steele rates Rick Stanzi as the 11th best QB in the nation, Adam Robinson as the 50th best RB, DJK as the 18th best WR, Marvin McNutt as the 36th best WR, Allen Reisner as the 41st best TE, Brett Morse as the 8th best FB, Riley Reiff as the 46th best OT, Adrian Clayborn as a 1st team AA and 2nd best DE, Tyler Sash as a 3rd team AA and 5th best SS, Broderick Binns as the 29th best DE, Christian Ballard as the 21st best DT, Karl Klug as the 42nd best DT, Tyler Nielsen as the 54th best ILB, DJK as the 18th best KOR, Jeremiha Hunter as the 38th best OLB, Ryan Donahue as the #1 punter, Shaun Prater as the 38th best CB, Colin Sandeman as the 19th best PR, Brett Grenwood as the 6th best FS….

He has Iowa’s DL as the 3rd best in the nation and the 5th best defensive backfield, plus the 13th best special teams unit.

Steele picks Iowa to go to the Rose Bowl to play USC, with Ohio State playing Oklahoma for the national title, and TCU vs Alabama in the Sugar…but there’s a big problem with that, in that it cannot happen as Steele has predicted it.
If Ohio State would play a BCS conference opponent in the national title game other than a team from the Pac 10, and if a non-BCS team is in the final BCS Top 12, that team would get the Big Ten’s vacated Rose Bowl slot this year, or the first time in happens over the next four years, so Iowa could not go to the Rose under the national title and TCU scenario he lays out. Iowa would go to the Sugar under Steele’s model. For more information on this Rose Bowl clause, click here for our article from May 12th.

Interesting notes: Michigan has now had back to back losing seasons after 40 straight winning seasons…10 of the league’s top 11 rushers from last year return this season, but all three of the league’s 3,000+ yard passers are gone…none of the returning quarterbacks threw more than 19 touchdown passes last year, with all but one returning starting quarterback throwing at least 10 interceptions in 2009…just one of the top seven tacklers from last year returns (Greg Jones of MSU), but nine of the top ten kickoff return specialists are back, not counting Iowa’s DJK who did not have enough returns to qualify.

I have barely even scratched the surface of all of the information in this magazine..amazing features, so much more on the Hawkeyes…it’s simply the best magazine for the money and I have no financial tie to the magazine what so ever.

Iowa returns less starts on the OL than the rest of the B10 so I understand the #11 rating from an objective review.

Simply by virtue of how well this staff recruits and develops the OL, I think you have to give the unit the benefit of the doubt and consider them somewhere closer to the #5-8 range in the B10.

There is SOOOO much info in Steele's mag, it can make your head spin. Great bathroom reading...enough info to get you through the summer.

QB: 3 (Who's #2 behind Pryor??)
RB: 4 (About right, but surely underrated)
REC: 5 (Wayyyy underrated)
OL: 11 (No way...based upon returners only...doesn't account for history of reloading)
DL: 1 (Yup)
LB: 5 (Yup)
DB: 1 (Surprising)
ST: 1 (Yup)

I can tell you one thing. The Iowa OL may be young but they are not going to ever end up 11. May not be in the top 5 although it would not surprise me if they did, but no way they are 11. The current players do have some valuable experience & they will be going up, arguably a top 3 D-line in the nation on a daily basis. This is KF specialtly so we can be rest assured they will not be at or towards the bottom.

QB: 3 sure
RB: 4 sure, OSU, Wiscy, & PSU prolly better for sure
REC: 5 hard to find 4 WR core's better, imo
OL: 11 won't be in the Rose Bowl if we're not better than Minny on the OL
DL: 1 yep
LB: 5 yep
DB: 1 yep
ST: 1 no way in hell, imo. Donahue being overrated by many...Murray was a liability last year & had a lousy spring according to KF...TM prolly not any better.

QB - it would be a shame if he is putting Tolzein ahead of Stanzi. The only one I could think of.

It is Tolzien. Sporting News has Tolzein at #1 I believe.

Yeah well...whatever...this will be Mr. Tolzein in the 1st quarter at Kinnick this year.

Wisconsin is a running team, first and foremost but they dont have a defense. If they cant win some of the battles against the other teams offense, they wont beat anybody in the top 15. Just like last year.
The Wisconsin love reminds me of the Illini from last season. Supposed to have this great offense. Unstopable WRs. SR QB starting his 4th year. Blah blah blah.
How'd that work out for them?
Wisconsin is in the same boat.

The best thing here is this:

"OL: 11"

There cannot be any greater motivation possible! Having your unit ranked the absolute worst in the Big Ten is incredibly motivating. This being done by the most respected man in the business - Phil Steele.
I will say this, there is definitely no way Iowa's O-line ends up anything worse than 5th in the Big Ten. Not a chance. This o-line will be just fine. Vandervelde will be All-Big Ten. Ferentz at center I think is an improvement, at least a push. Zusevic will be solid. Gettis, Orne, McMillan or MacMillan will be fantastic to rotate in as well, if they don't start.... Who am I missing??? Besides Reiff, he is an All-American.
Plus, we have more upper classmen in our depth than we have had in awhile. Huntermark and Koeppel, that's some of who I was missing. I still think that there is someone else?

#11 in the conference?!? I don't think so!

Phil can't be perfect.

Who is ranked ahead of Iowa's WR corp?

I'll take a stab without looking, but I'd still shake my head at a few of them:

Ohio State (because it's Ohio State)
Wisconsin (because everyone is overrating them)
Michigan State (because they have some decent talent and are much more pass happy than most
Indiana (Tandon Doss is getting a lot of praise though I'm probably taking a shot in the dark here)

wouldn't surprise me if it was Penn State as well, but that'd still be a joke. I've heard people, some not even Penn State fans, say their WRs in 2010 could be even better than 2008's group.
You know, the group that was 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively in catches all-time at PSU and held plenty of other records by the time they were done.

Poor misguided fans.....

I added up Steele's unit ranking for the big ten, kind of like making up a power rankings, here's how it turned out

1.Ohio St. 16
2.Wisconsin 26
3.Iowa 31
4.Penn St. 32
5.Michigan 37
6.Michigan St. 40
7.Northwestern 55
8.Minnesota 58
9.Purdue 60
10.Indiana 62
11.Illinois 67
