Petras, his family, and friends/handlers know his speed limitations

I think the coaches should stay with Padilla right now. He seems to start the game better and is a little quicker

And Petras and his camp have to know with his lack of quickness and lack of overall speed (they are different) he has very little chance to make an NFL team. If for some reason Petras starts two more years and shows a lot of growth reading defenses, finding open targets, and getting the completion percentage into the high 60's to 70 then nfl teams make try him out. I have always thought he has been a good enough hawk QB to win a lot of games which he has. His first two games last year his OLine pass pro was not great and the run game was not great, both bad things for a QB. Then things got rolling and he played above avg making lots of really great throws and decisions that we know of.

If I was Petras and wanted to improve I would start with a really good sprint coach and trainer to work on the hip flexors and glute muscles to even find out if I could drop my 40 yd dash time by .2 seconds or more and more importantly really quicken my first two steps to improve escapability from the pocket. Padilla is not a speed burner so might take some hits and we may need Petras sooner than later.

Its not just his lack of straightline speed that is the issue. Petras instincts are also all wrong. He does not step up in the pocket and find space, he holds the ball too long, and when he does take off to "run" its half a second too late. I don't know how you teach those types of instincts. He has not shown pocket feel. But, again, the line has been bad this year.

Petras clearly has an NFL arm (strength, not accuracy). Petras also seems to be a good person and a natural leader. Beyond that, every other aspect of his game is a river valley away from NFL ready. But, guys can make leaps. Joe Burrows came out of nowhere. I hope he sits the rest of the year, and there is a legit competition in the Spring/Fall.

Petras either has a hard time reading defenses and going through his progressions, or has been completely overcoached to the point of complete lack of decisiveness. He refuses to take any chances and no risk means no reward. I think he still has great upside, but that special "it" factor he does not have, yet. I say this because when he has had time more often than not he misreads the defense or waits too long to make his throw.

He also needs to learn to throw to windows and trust his arm and throws. Real elite QB's throw in windows and hit receivers on the run for YACS. This really what sets QB's apart. This ain't Jr. High where you wait for a receiver to be open and squat down for a catch.

His release is also quite a bit slower that Padilla's. It has been pretty fun to see receivers hit in stride too. That's something that has been a rarity in the past few years (Stanley rarely hit a receiver in stride too)

The WUW are correct…Padilla/Petras aren’t exactly interchangeable, but you get similar results no matter who is playing.

I am all for riding it out with Padilla…just not going to put him in the savior category. A healthy Petras, despite his limitations, still gets Iowa to a 10-2 mark.

This time next year it feels like we(Iowa fans) will be shitting on Padilla about what he can’t do.

I was really disgusted with our passing game today. Protection was quite good, but we need to catch the damn ball. I did not like the quick slants over the middle into heavy traffic. 82 yards is pretty pathetic. 6 for 17 by Padilla. His mobility continues to pay off. Blame could be passed around.

Key words in your first paragraph.
(Similar results) Stanley, Bethards second season, Petra's, Padilla. It's the system they are made to play in.
These kids are made to play a system where tight formations and predictable plays are called in pass or run. Every team we play knows this. Ever wonder why are guys are covered all the time but opposing teams guys seem open ? If it wasn't for some bad throws and drops Illinois would of won that game! I said once this year that Iowa's pass plays reads are already predetermined and if it's there throw it if not check down and got shit for stating it. Even the anouncers made the same comment I just did about that. We don't have Qb problems! We have a system problem period!

Yes, we could run the pass defense off down the field on one side or the other all day long and dump it in the flat or by the sideline near the LOS to our running backs, fullback, a tight end, and get consistently good yardage. Of course the QB first looks downfield to see if a receiver is open for a bigger play.

When the defense has to come up to guard the flat there should be more openings 10 yards downfield.

And I see other teams run a ton of comeback patterns which are really hard to defend. We throw it once or twice a game and we have the speed with KJOhnson, Bruce, Jones, Ragaini and tracy to drive and turn a defender then stop and comeback for an easy pitch and catch for 5 yards and then maybe some YAC.

I am glad someone else sees the same as i see. Simply put i said yesterday we could have Peyton Manning as our QB and he wont throw for over 200 yds every game. Its just the system we run that limits our WR and QBs
