Peter Jok Interview Following Pacers Workout

He went in there with the right mindset that's for sure. Defense. He's right about the NBA....spacing is completely different. When guys penetrate...open looks are there to be had. He just needs to show he's willing to D it up.

He has to make shots. If he makes it, his niche will be to come into games and make shots. He said all the right things in that interview, but I think he will never be adequate enough as a defender. For 75 -80% of the guys that come into the league it is about finding a role. Jok's role will be making jumpers....... if I were him I would put everything into that.

Like the NFL, the NBA game and the coaches are brutal and relentless if they have a mismatch. If he can't defend, they will go at him over and over and over. It doesn't help you come in and score, if you give up easy ones on the other end. You have to be able to stop people too.

The NBA and the NFL are about finding role players and finding them cheap. If Jok makes it in the league he will never be asked to lock down anybody. He will have one role........make shots that's it.

Tough to find a place in the NBA as a volume shooter unless you are truly elite. He will need a more well-rounded game. Or be content to fill a niche, such as backup points, but not starter volume shooting.

I would love for Jok to make the final roster of the Pacers who then would cut Niang. I don't wish anything bad on Georges but I love seeing cyfans dreams get crushed. Maybe Georges could join Royce White in the Canadian pro league which is the equivalent of the Clear Lake boys 7th grade team.

You have an unhealthy obsession with Iowa state. I think Pete could make some noise in the summer league but I don't see him getting drafted

Freaking exactly. Makes no difference if a guy put up 25 pts a night but gives up 20 on defense. No better than the player that plays terrific D against his guy holding said guy to 8 pts but scores 18 points himself. Even though a stud shooter can score 30 pts a game, the advantage is not there is they give up a ton of points on defense.

Absolutely wrong. He will have to be at least formidable on D. Makes no sense to get 20 pts a game but give up 18 on D. Wow, 2pt advantage for your team. No team is going to pay big $$ for that.

Not sure what league you are watching, bro. Jok doesn't have the athleticism to be formidable on D. Does he have to give more effort on D than he did at Iowa? Absolutely. But this notion that he will be able to guard people in space this late in the game is silly.

Make shots......Get to a spot make shots.....Create spacing to get your shot off......make shot. That is how he makes the league, that is how he stays in the league.

Where did I say he did? I'm just pointing out how even though one scores a lot, the benefit is not there to the team if they don't defend their responsibility.

Think about what you are saying. Harden, Irving,Curry,Isiah Thomas don't play a lot of D. I realize everything in sports is analytics, but scouts and GM(s) aren't looking at that ratio that way to determine a players value.

Exactly.... sure there are some stars of the league like Lebron and Kawhi who are tremendous on both ends of the floor but many guys have very defined rolls and are very good at what they do.

Tony Allen/Bruce Bowen - Defenders
Kyle Korver/JJ Reddick- Shooters
Tristan Thompson/Reggie Evans- Monster on the glass

There's so many more examples but these are some that initially came to mind of really having a well defined niche.

The emphasis on the 3 pointer has changed so much in the NBA and will continue to do so. If you can shoot, you can play and the GM/coaches will scheme around your weaknesses.

Jok's problem is he's a shooter, but not a next level one yet. Kyle Korver is a career 43% shooter from 3 point range in the NBA and was a 45% shooter in college. Jok shot in the high 30's in college.

If you combine Jok's good (not great) 3 point shooting with the fact that he can't really drive the ball or play defense, then I'm not sure where he fits in. He will probably start in the D-league and then get a chance at a second unit in the NBA possibly. From there its all up to him. Similar to Uthoff.

It always drove me nuts that Jok was a 90% free throw shooter but never attacked the basket.

1) Peter played in the Big 10 and Kyle played in the Missouri Valley.
2) The college 3 pt line got moved back in 2008 so Kyle benefited from playing while it was at the shorter distance.

Excellent point.

Wasn't that the start of the Miss Valley's bubble when they started to have multiple teams that were good? Not that it really goes along with this conversation, but made me think when it started.

I think Korver was one of those players that took deep 3 shots anyway well past the 19' 9" line, so I'm not certain the shorter line played that much of a difference than it would for other players.
