Perspective

When is the last time you heard someone say, or even thought...wow, Kirk really out-coached them for this win?
So building up players and getting them to play tough and play smart football isn't good coaching? I think I get what your saying. Are you suggesting from an Xs and Os perspective is KF fooling teams schematically? Well no but to me it's selling the guy short to say he's not out coaching guys. Blocking/tackling are as much a teachable skill as throwing and catching are and all of it is needed to play football at this level. To undersell one aspect isn't being fair. (Not that I'm saying you are, just in general)

You're saying that KF should get credit for "execution". I completely agree!

To me it's everything. There's no 'perfect' coach or coaching style anymore then there's ever been a 'perfect' game that's ever been played. To be a 'successful' coach it's all circumstantial based on expectations as well but you'll be hard pressed to find folks on the outside that'd say KF hasn't been that. Those like Cowherd can say they aren't worthy of the next level love like the Bamas and OSUs get and to that I say Ok that's true. Iowa is striving to get to that point and Wisconsin is probably the closest thing to what Iowa's ceiling is. At least on any kind of 5 to 10 yr window goes.

Why does a fan have to be positive when things aren't positive. I was a fan when things weren't well. My biggest complaint isn't wins and losses. My biggest complaint is sort of like this:

HF: We need to recruit Florida as we can't get the speed we need in Iowa or the Midwest overall.

KF: We can't recruit speed because we are Iowa.

HF made us sort of proud to be from Iowa.
KF acts embarrassed about being in Iowa.

HF made fans enter each game like there is a chance.
KF plays not to win.

I am a fan who misses the different mindset.

Iowa under HF scared the opponents no matter what the record
Iowa under KF scares opponents that they will be embarrassed by losing to Iowa (unless you are IL, MN, Purdue or IN).

That pretty much sums it.

My question in reverse. If you are a real fan how can you even be a fan accepting mediocrity. Note, Mediocrity is better than being bad. It's just not good.

More wins than losses doesn't mean much when those wins include FCS, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Rutgers, Wyoming this year, and NTSU. A winning record against MSU, Nebby, OSU, Mich, PSU, Maryland, MSU, Wisky (or even .500) would mean something. Granted if OSU, M, and PSU are on the schedule in a given year, that isn't so easy.

We struggled against very weak teams NC. Why would you expect to do so well in conference minus IL, IU, Purdue and Rutgers?

My first Hawkeye game was watching Iowa lose to a bad Illinois team in what I think was a 3 win season. I won two tickets on the WHO radio pick em contest. I was afraid I was going to get the radio or the weekend in MSPL. No one was more excited. Even back then it seemed Iowa was at least trying to win as opposed to trying not to lose.

I honestly don't know how a good fan can be so satisfied with what we've seen. Bowl games? Can we not get blown out repeatedly? That's not reasonable? The guy is a 20 year coach acting like he's trying to coach ISU as a developmental squad.

Wouldn't mind seeing a shoulder check.
Another difference between KF and HF:
Hayden says scratch where it itches.
Kirk says, well, execution.

I like the OP and he could be right, but I have a little more optimistic “perspective”. We beat Illinois this wknd and get in sync offensively. D might hold Illini to 0. More confidence and better locker room going into the bye. Will be a productive and good timing for the bye and extra week to prep for jNWU. We match up against jNWU very well this year and they are not very good. Very winnable game and that road win can get the bad taste out of the team’s mouth left from East Lansing. Then home for another winnable and trophy game. I realize it’s a lot of ifs there, but it is very possible that in less than a month we will be sitting at 6-2 with a top 10 team coming into Kinnick (night game?) and a chance to redeem the PSU loss. We all would be feeling pretty damn good at that point. Everybody hold your horses.
Go Huskers this wknd, btw.

You had me until the end. I hope wisc gets upset, and Iowa can beat them as well, but not nebby, never nebby.

No one I hate more than Neb, but between them and Michigan, and maaaaaybe Minny at Minny last game of the year (super long shot), only chances for Wisco to lose. If we want to throw in the towel which I would understand that perspective being 0-2, then don’t care who wins that game.

Fair point. We just need to win out and pull for meatchicken.

We have a passing quarterback that right now can't throw the deep ball. It is the same as having a running quarterback with a broken leg. He is close, and I am sure he shows the promise that he will get it down, but right now he is killing our scheme of play action and taking advantage of one on one matchups because he can't do it. But I have faith he will or we will get someone else in there that can.

I dont agree with most what you said above.

Stanley can throw the ball deep. He just needs to get more accurate with the it. And he is not far off. Each deep ball he has thrown he has overthrown the receiver by about 5 yards. But he certainly has the arm he just needs to dial it in is all. He is a lot more accurate then CJ was and has much better pocket presence.

Play action? I don't recall seeing much of that in the last two games especially the last game. I find more fault in the coaching staff for hardly ever using play action when its clearly obvious that the opponents defense is focused and sucked into the motion of the RB and offensive line. Our coaching staff is plainly stubborn about using a run game when the defense blows it up and is keyed in for it almost every time. It is painful to watch. It is clear that we have the players to stretch the field more and open things up, and knowing that we have the players to do that but yet we don't makes it even more frustrating. Again thats on the coach.

Stanley has had some success with one on one matchups but he is just a sophomore. Naturally he needs some time is all.

I don't think that putting the blame on Stanley is justified and frankly I think a lot of what you are saying is inaccurate.

I see a lot more problems with the coaching staff game performance then the players.

Kirk has always struggled with in game tweaking, changing game plans on the fly...get the appropriate play out there, on time...he seems lost "in the minute" of game flow.

Sure, he is very good at other aspects...

How this offensive line seems unable to create running lanes is surprising/disappointing...

How the defensive line is unable to create pressure and turnovers, disruption is surprising/disappointing...

How we seem to have little ability for our wide receivers to get open in space is surprising/disappointing...

Perhaps we should blame the punter...

So, Iowa under KF gets a lot of delay of game penalties and they don't make adjustments in the 2nd half to make comebacks?

Iowa's Oline is absolutely disappointing but there has been shuffling around. I think it will continue to get stronger

Iowa has 2 players in the top 10 of the B1G in sacks - 3 players in the B1G in the top 10 for tackles for a loss, so, I honestly believe the Dline not getting enough pressure is an absolute fabrication.

Our WR's are young, but show a lot of promise IMO - our passing game has been a + so far this season IMO

Our punter situation is killing us.

Sorry been gone to respond but TLDR: Go be a Drake fan then get back to me when you fix their problems.

Michigan had a less than optimal qb in that game that got hurt. Greatly reduced Jimmy's ability to counter a very good Iowa defense geared to stop certain aspects of the game.

I do understand what he tried to do against PSU. Just think he didn't need to do it. At home we were on equal level with them. MSU was not on the road. We were better but the same style kept them in the game.
I guess you didn't see my little inversion of letters changing Brian..cramp into brain..cramp? Would you, at least, admit to a Ferentz cramp suffered by Harbaugh? Really, wouldn't Harbaugh have some contingency plans for an injured starting QB or is Harbaugh an execution and system kinda guy as well (I wouldn't at all be surprised if this were true)?

Yes, but I would give him some break in that he hasn't had time to set up his program. A 20 year coach should have that.

Iowa played a nice game. Michigan in a few years I imagine will have some NFL qbs.
