Re: Per Mike Hlas: Adam Robinson is back
I became a Hawkeye in the early 1980s. I have seen several great backs play for Hayden and Kirk. AR and BW aren't on the list.
This was my only and entire point.
Have a nice evening, Chad!
So from the 1980s on...let's take a look at some of those backs:
JHF Years:
--Jeff Brown (really better as a "scatback", returner, etc., but a decent RB)
--JC Love Jordan (got moved to WB/FL)
--Eddie Phillips (faster than ARob, probably not as fast as Wegher, but DID set career rushing yardage record, and his 30-yard gain on 3rd-and-29 against Illinois in 1982 may have "saved" the 1982 season from being 6-5, 5-6 or worse. Played on two 8-4 teams and a 9-3 team at the "dawn" of the The Return to Football Relevance for The University of Iowa)
--Phil Blatcher (decent during the 1981 Rose Bowl season, in stretches)
--Norm Granger (moved to FB, one of the better ones in the JHF/KF Eras)
--Owen Gill (moved to FB when Ronnie Harmon emerged, but could play RB just as well as he could play FB)
--Ronnie Harmon (pretty much the standard for the 1980s)
--Rick Bayless (very solid)
--Kevin Harmon (any shortcomings redeemed by his KOR to set table for winning FG in 1986 Holiday Bowl)
--Tony Stewart (shared time with Nick Bell, Mike Saunders, et. al., very good RB)
--Mike Saunders (very good RB)
--Nick Bell (very good-to-excellent)
--Sedrick Shaw (still all-time career rushing yardage leader, excellent RB, clearly the best of the JHF years)
--Tavian Banks (until Shonn Greene, single-season leader, excellent RB, but only really one year as "feature" back)
JHF/KF "straddle":
--Really only one, Ladell Betts (What could he have done behind a decent OL? Arguably top 2 or 3 in JHF/KF Eras)
KF Years:
--Aaron Greving (gave it up because of injury, lost that "something" after his injury)
--Fred Russell (along with Shaw, Harmon and Greene, the top rung during the JHF/KF Eras)
--Jermelle Lewis (again, what could have been...)
--Albert Young (per Russell and Lewis, the best RB they had ever seen/played alongside, how good could he have been sans injuries?)
--Damian Sims (behind AY, had explosiveness AY lacked due to injuries)
--Shonn Greene (hard to believe this guy sat behind anyone, but proof that blocking and pass-catching factor into being the number one RB)
--ARob (freshman yardage record as a redshirt, on way to 1000 yards as a soph, injuries, academics and, eventually, off-the-field issues. But to be injured against MSU in 2009, not able to go against Indiana or NW, then come back for OSU when Wegher got sick, shows how tough the kid was)
--Brandon Wegher (not nearly as fast as advertised, but athletic as heck, excellent receiving skills, had home-run skills, but baggage to the eyeballs)
--Marcus Coker (oh-what-might-have-been? Lacked top-end speed his soph year, but showed he had enough speed to get some long gains)
--Brad Rogers (almost took the 'shirt off at OSU, relegated to FB with some time at RB, heart issue, then returns to play FB. As of now, easily the best choice in most of our 1-back sets, can catch, better speed than ARob)
--McCall (let it go, people)
--De'Andre Johnson/Damon Bullock (lets hope...)
There are others I obviously missed or left out. But looking at that list, it's hard to think, when all is said and done, that EITHER ARob or BW would make any conceivable "Top Ten" list from the JHF/KF period.
NOTE* I left Dennis Mosely off the list because he came to Iowa before JHF arrived...
