Path to Citrus Bowl

If we assume a win over Nebraska, it looks like three bowls are most likely for Iowa: Holiday, Gator, and Citrus.

I know Citrus would love us with the strong attendance. I believe we had the highest attendance since our game against LSU. To make it to Orlando, what all do we need to have fall in place? Here is what I’m thinking:

-Ohio State needs to crush Michigan. Michigan would fall to 9-3.

-Minnesota needs to crush Wisconsin. Wisconsin would be 9-3.

-Ohio State needs to beat MN in B10 championship, they then go to playoff. Close game and MN to Rose Bowl.

-Penn State beats Rutgers and is selected by Cotton.

-Iowa gets style points with big win over Nebraska, and thus wins last three games of season. Unlike MIchigan and Wisconsin who would have lost last game of season.

Final Bowls...

OS - Playoff
MN - Rose
PS - Cotton
IA - Citrus
WI - Outback
MI - Holiday
IN - Gator
IL - Redbox
MS - Quick Lane

While this is more likely than the thread on making a NY6 bowl, this isn’t happening. Iowa burned yet another season because the offensive coordinator is still learning on the job.....at a snails pace i might add. Iowa should of defeated 2/3 from the Michigan/Penn State/ Wisconsin, if not all 3 and been locked into the Rose. Brian simply has no ability to understand an offense should attack defensive weaknesses. Running with 8 or 9 in the box is BF trying to flex his muscle that 5 of his linemen can block 8 defenders, in short he is a joke of an OC.

Michigan, Penn State and sadly Wisconsin have better brands than Iowa, I fear its the Gator or Holiday, respectable bowls but a lost season of what could have been...............again.

Iowa's not going to jump both a 9-3 SCum and Bucky to a better bowl.

Both beat Iowa.
Both SCum and Bucky travel just as well as Iowa.
SCum is a blue blood. Quality TV name.
Bucky has Taylor to showcase.

Iowa has nothing remotely close to the above this season to offer other than travel.

Iowa's going to drop behind a 9-3 SCum and 9-3 Bucky in the bowl pecking order.

I posed a similar projection in my Friday Five

Bowl selections are strictly based on wins and losses and head to head comparisons. The Big Ten's bowl agreements attempt to rotate different teams through the partnerships.

It's being reported that the Holiday wants Harbaugh back in San Diego as that's where he started his head coaching career and played for the Chargers.

I laid out some other factors in terms of which teams have already been to certain bowls in the link above.

And if a part of the selection process was bowl matchups, high powered offense for ratings, etc then the Hawks fall behind in those measures. Most of the Big teams travel well. Maybe the PSU and Mich fan bases will not travel well to the Music City Bowl like Iowa's fans would but if it is a decent warm weather site and a pretty big game all the fan bases will travel well.

Rob, does the Big 10 know the opponents they face in bowl games before or during the selection process in order to get the blue blood matchups like Mich-Bama, PSU-Georgia/bama, etc?

But this isn't how the Big Ten sends teams to bowl games. They try to rotate the teams and they work with the bowls on matchups.

If Iowa beats Nebraska they will have a decent shot at the Citrus Bowl but, IMO, there is not much difference between Citrus, Gator, or Holiday. To me they are all 2nd tier bowls.

You do recall Jonathan taylor hung 250 yards on our defense, right???

I think the B1G tries to stay out of it, for the most part. It knows the tie-ins, like Outback is v SEC, Holiday PAC-12, etc. The bowls really have the say within the parameters of the agreements.

Look, pal, if you run 3 jet sweep or end around style plays in a game and put up 6 yards total, the defense will have to respect the motion, then you can show that motion a few times and pound the RB up the middle for 2 yards instead of getting stuffed at the LOS because the defense will be watching the motion for the handoff.

The zone blocking scheme is outdated, takes too long to set up and is too predictable. Defenses swarm to where it's going and thus the problems running. Brian runs the offense within the confines of what his dad wants to run though I'm not sure if he too buys into his dad's scheme or he's doing it because he has to.

The problem with bowl season is that 2 things usually happen:

1) Iowa goes to a crappy bowl and wins and everybody bitches about going to a crappy bowl.
2) Iowa goes to a good bowl and loses and everybody bitches about getting beat in a bowl.

My ideal bowl is to go to the best bowl game where we have a chance to win. I don't want a close loss, but it's better than going to a great bowl, going there and watching us get smoked. I also don't want to watch us beat Texas State in the Detroit Bowl after Kathy Ireland misses a game winning FG.

I thought Brian was run game coordinator in '16, maybe '15 as well. We didn't set the world on fire, but we had a very competent run game. I recall Canzeri taking two to the house on Nebraska. What has changed?

Its not a playoff 4 or Rose...so who cares? It wont be Outback, take care of Neb and let the chips fall.
This is true. As a fan, do you want to go to California or Florida? The team Iowa would play is about the same. I'd prefer they play a team they can beat, what bowl they are in (absent the Rose or the CFP) doesn't make that much of a difference to me.

On paper all bowls are the same. However playing an SEC team on New Year’s Day in the citrus smack dab in the middle of the best high school football in the country sure beats playing in a west coast time zone against a pac 12 team nobody cares about East of the Rocky Mountains.

I’d always prefer Iowa plays an SEC team. Let’s face it, everyone likes to rip on SEC teams, but they are the dominant conference and their top tier teams offer way more exposure in prime southeastern states than playing Washington or Arizona state.

Letting the chips fall is really the only way we have of thinking. First Iowa has to beat Nebby and if they do their 9-3 record looks awfully damn good when you take into account losing 2 road games to about top 12 teams.

If Iowa wins Friday they will get a good bowl.

The B1G, and potentially Iowa, is going to get screwed by the Orange’s tie in with the ACC. The orange bowl is going to be like Georgia Vs some crummy unranked ACC team. The point spread will be 24.5 points.

Imagine being Penn State. 10-2 and your only losses on the road against ranked opponents, one being Ohio State who is potentially the best team in the country, and they won’t even get a NY6 bowl. That’s what a lot of the projections are saying right now anyway.

Maybe these NY6 bowls will learn that an unmotivated SEC team isn’t the best bet, see Georgia last year.
