Path to Citrus Bowl

The B1G, and potentially Iowa, is going to get screwed by the Orange’s tie in with the ACC. The orange bowl is going to be like Georgia Vs some crummy unranked ACC team. The point spread will be 24.5 points.

Imagine being Penn State. 10-2 and your only losses on the road against ranked opponents, one being Ohio State who is potentially the best team in the country, and they won’t even get a NY6 bowl. That’s what a lot of the projections are saying right now anyway.

Maybe these NY6 bowls will learn that an unmotivated SEC team isn’t the best bet, see Georgia last year.

The bowls don't care about the game, they care about selling tickets and getting people in town for a day or two. Georgia has a huge fan base and if the game is in the southeast, they'll always bring a ton of fans.

I think Iowa jumps PSU, Michigan, and Minnesota for the Citrus because those teams have played in the Citrus recently.

It might come down to the Wisconsin/Minnesota game. If Minnesota wins then Wisconsin is a lock for the Citrus and Iow goes to the Holiday Bowl. If Wisconsin wins they probably get the Rose Bowl and Iowa gets into the Citrus.

I’m wondering if the results of the Nebraska game even matters.

That might happen, but as I mentioned Penn State is absolutely deserving of a NY6 bowl and if they get it the whole situation works itself out. Iowa & Michigan get Citrus and Holiday in some order. Minny/UW winner gets Rose. Penn State Orange or Sugar. Minny/UW loser Outback. Those would all be solid bowl games with good matchups.

The thing that in my opinion is dumb, is that teams like Baylor and Oregon are going to get rewarded for making their conference championship game, but that’s just a product of being in a weaker conference. Penn State had a buzzsaw in their division.

You do recall Jonathan taylor hung 250 yards on our defense, right???
What does that have to do with anything I said? But since you brought it up, you do realize Iowa lost this game by a deuce....lost by two and BF shit his pants cause he doesn’t know how to call a game.

I thought Brian was run game coordinator in '16, maybe '15 as well. We didn't set the world on fire, but we had a very competent run game. I recall Canzeri taking two to the house on Nebraska. What has changed?

Maybe the defenses have caught on and figured out to an even greater extent, how to stop the Hawks' run game, compared to 3-4 years ago. You can sure see that the defense knows where the runs are going oftentimes prior to the snap and just after.

a smart OC would recognize this as well and run plays that exploit the tendency of opposing D’s knowing our playbook and the direction of our running plays. It is mind bendingly stupid the way BF calls plays in game. You’d think with an elite defense such as Iowa, you’d feel good about punching the gas on offense some.

You blamed our 3 losses squarely on the offense. I guess Stanley should have gone in at linebacker to stop Taylor. No one else could.

Here’s a stat for ya, Iowa had 295 yards of offense with BF calling the plays, Wisconsin had 473 with Taylor’s 250. Taylor didn’t beat us, BF did with calling plays Wisconsin knew better than BF.
More you ask, okay. against Penn State, BF mustered up 294 yards of offense, against Michigan he put out 261 yards....see any pattern here? One more for you, against Minnesota BF play called us into 290 yards of offense. So, against arguably our 4 toughest conference opponents, BF can’t break 3 bills of offense. He is horrible, Iowa has enough on the field to be offensively competitive, but BF just refuses to put the offense in position to do so.

Whatever it is a I hope they can solve the offense. Just don't see them beating a anyone with a decent D.

I LIKE BOWL WINS

I’m not going to sit here and say BF is good or anything like that, I don’t think he is.

The problem with your argument is that Iowa has been bad on offense for the better part of the last 20 years spanning three offensive coordinators. At a certain point you have to wonder if it’s really the coordinator who is at fault.

In spending a lot of time studying the bowl rules, prognosticators and such, I'm seeing a path for both Iowa and the B1G that may be good, but may be a total disaster, especially for us. In summary:
  • The B1G will put itself in the best position if Ohio State beats Michigan, Minnesota beats Wisconsin, Penn State and Iowa don't get upset in their final games this weekend, then Minnesota is reasonably competitive against tOSU in the championship game, even if they do lose;
  • The bowl selection people, already having taken tOSU for the national semi-finals, pick Minnesota to go to the Rose Bowl. Then, in a choice between Florida and Penn State for the final NY6 bowl slot, (easily) go with Penn State;
  • The NY6 bowl selectors send Penn State to the Cotton Bowl and not to the Orange Bowl.
If that happens, then the full range of bowls is available to the B1G. My hunch is if they choose Penn State over Minnesota to go to the Rose Bowl, or if Wisconsin beats Minnesota, neither of the B1G West teams will be selected for an NY6 game. It is also possible, though I think highly unlikely, that the B1G would still get one national semi-finalist and two NY6 teams if Michigan beats Ohio State (just a hunch).

In the above scenario, and again where Penn State is sent to the Cotton Bowl (since if they go to the Orange Bowl, the B1G is ineligible to send a team to the Citrus Bowl), it should break down like this:

  • Ohio State to the national semi-finals;
  • Minnesota to the Rose Bowl;
  • Penn State to the Cotton Bowl;
  • IOWA to the Citrus Bowl (which the Citrus Bowl committee has been clamoring for literally for years);
  • Indiana to the Outback Bowl (since neither Wisconsin, Iowa nor Michigan are eligible - thank Jim Delaney for that);
  • Wisconsin to the Tax Slayer (Gator) Bowl (since Iowa has already been to this bowl);
  • Michigan to the Holiday Bowl (for a perceived HUGE match-up of yesteryear vs. USC);
  • Illinois to the Rotten Apple Ice Bowl in NYC;
  • Michigan State to the "Short Bus Trip to Detroit" Bowl.
If anything - and I mean ANYTHING - throws a monkey wrench into the bowl works, most likely Iowa then falls all the way to the RedBox bowl in Santa Clara, California. A day at a Six Flags but not much else.

I guess I know who and what I will be rooting for in the next couple of weeks.

Insightful comment, my friend. As for those who say since it's not the Rose or NY6 or Play-off 4, who cares, I will remind them of what remains THE finest finish perhaps of any bowl game ever just happened to involve the Citrus Bowl and a team named Iowa. And since we have made a living at going to better bowls than we probably should have (including two Outback bowls in the last three years after borderline seasons), it give us something to root for as we await the final selections. But I do agree - first we have to beat the Shuckers.

I'm pretty sure Iowa didn't run a statue of liberty play to beat Oklahoma on the last play of the game in the Citrus Bowl. I think that was Boise State, bud. Because that was the greatest end of a bowl game ever.

Actually, I had trouble getting a post created as a response, so let me try again. As to "who cares"...

I do. And, the players care. The coaches care. A lot of Iowa fans care. Maybe not so many on this forum? The conference reputation and Iowa's in particular care how many BT teams win bowl games. Also, we should all care for recruitment, and just as importantly, for the extra practices that typically focus on getting reps for kids who are likely starters in the fall of 2020. (Recall all of the bitching about not playing back ups, especially at QB...this prep is key to success for whomever is he starting QB in 2020.) And, this is not about you, my friend You don't matter when it comes to who cares about Iowa's bowl game. Get over yourself. along with the idiots who constantly bitch about how meaningless bowl games are. They know nothing about football.

If it makes you feel any better, JT is going to hang a double century on a bad Gopher D this Sat . You can book that.

I don't know dude. I'm pulling for the Gophers. Won't matter who gets to Indy though. Ohio State is on a level all by themselves.
