Painter made a stupid move today

How many times did you see Mr. Davis keep the starters in at the end of games when we were blowing teams out? You didn't. Good coaches don't do that because a.) it's an @ss move toward the opposition's coach and b.) you risk injuring someone you need to make a deep run in the NCAA tourney.

Just because nothing bad happened doesn't mean it wasn't a stupid move.

If you steal and don't get caught, it doesn't make it ok.

So, you are comparing Matt Painter's choice to play his starters when up 20 to a punishable crime?

Hmm.

Like I said, I know where you are coming from (on the surface). But, as stated, a) nobody was injured, b) there are bigger picture things at stake, c) have you ever heard of 'one minute warriors'?

Watch any game that is a blowout. Even when teams are up 20 going into the 4th quarter of a HS game, the starters stay in, 90% of these occasions, for at least 4-5 minutes.

What's the difference?

Are you saying each and every coach, me included, who has done that is 'stupid'?

I bet if I started from Tom Davis' first game as coach at Iowa to his last, I would find you one game in which he broke your golden rule of coaching.

We lost. You were upset so you started this topic because you needed something to pin your frustration on. It's understandable.

It will happen again when Iowa loses: someone starting an 'excuse' type topic.

From the 32:00 I watched of the game, I thought Purdue was EASILY the better team and Painter is a pretty smart coach.

And, people can now see why Vegas is in business. That 19.5 spread looks pretty good now.

Unfortunately.

Sure, Boilers rolled, great...

By why in the hell is he keeping the starters in up 20 to 24 with 4 minutes left? Johnson didn't get out until a minute left in the game.

He's is damn lucky no one got hurt.

Stupid move, Matt. Stupid move.

He was teaching us a lesson. You don't eff with the Purdue Boilermakers or the Iowa Hawkeyes are the Boilermakers punks. Either way, we got served. :D

The Hawks need to suck it up and get better because we might get another shot at them this season, and certainly they will visit Carver next season. Suck it up, get better, get meaner and punk their punk arses next season.

Purdue hadn't been playing very well the last three games so why not let them have some fun, let them relax and let them play ball in front of the Iowa crowd.

It is up to Iowa to keep the game in check. It is not Purdue's fault that Iowa is a terrible team. Besides, it looks good when seedings come around. If anyone is at fault it is Lickliter for not having the team ready to play.

Besides, Lickliter should be used to getting his teeth kicked in by opposing coaches by now...he has been getting a steady dose of it for 3 years now. The taste of leather should be pretty good by now.

Maybe Painter had the Boilers minus the 19.5 points.

I'm glad I wasn't able to watch the game. Maybe I should just zap the DVR of it. Just when you think we might have taken a step forward, we drop another noncompetitive stinker like that. Everyone around here keeps looking for a "turning point," and I'm no different. As far as I'm concerned we won't have reached a turning point until we stop having games like this.

Maybe the practical standard for when we've reached a turning point is when it doesn't seem healthier to delete the DVR of a game than to watch it.

It was what it was. Purdue is just flat out a better team, and they owned the Hawkeyes on there home court. They are the #6 team in the country and they should be doing the Hawkeyes the way they did them today.

I don't expect there to be a turning point this season. If it does come I expect it next year - sometime after the non-conf.

It was cheap...but he's obviously worrying about a number 1 seed at this point...they need convincing wins.

Edit: Convincing wins= really bad beatdowns of the teams they're supposed to beat down.

If there is one thing that Purdue isn't (besides a 2nd round exit) it's a number 1 seed.

Purdue is slowly turning into the Big 10's version of Duke. Think about it.

I'm pretty sure I saw some starters head to the bench around the 9:00 mark and then Iowa went on a tear (laughing inside because it hurts). We went from being down 22 to down 17 and then Hummel came back in. I want to think that is why the starters remained in for longer than they should...basically a coach telling his scrubs that if they aren't ready to play then they aren't going to play. He finally called it off with 1:09 remaining. Not sure if that was what happened, just a guess.

Who cares? Players could also get hurt in practice so should they stop practicing? I have no problem with him keeping the starters in.

Plus, he probably had money on his own team -19.5

Ive thought about it and i cant figure out how thats a bad thing

Not a bad thing for them; but the parellels are there. Student section with a quirky name (complete with chant cards!), largely all white roster with said white guys seemingly being on the team for 8 years....it's all there.

Of course, they'll never be Duke, as ESPN wouldn't allow something like that to happen.

I dont know about the all white roster comment. 3 of their 4 best players are black.

Both schools students are dorks...cant argue that

Right, but it doesn't seem like they've been there as long as Hummel and Kramer have, does it? Those two kind of have a JJ Redick feel to them; it seemed like Redick was at Duke for like 10 years.

I get that feeling about Kramer but not Hummel, Hummel is a good player

I felt the same way about Greg Paulus - i know what youre saying but its just because they recruit good players who play for 4 years

In a couple of years other schools will say: isnt Matt Gatens 40? how is he still playing?

With 3:52 to go Purdue was up by 20. They won by 23. That's running up the score? When did Lick put Neari in? With less than one minute left in the game. Come on, people, this is a non-issue.

This whole thread is a head scratcher. I suppose some people are mad that they didn't put in their scrubs so maybe we could make a run, close the gap a little, and improve to 5-0 in moral victories on the season.

Perhaps Painter kept in his starters to make a point about finishing the entire game. And not letting up. Especially with the conference season winding down.

Threads like this are another reminder of how far we have fallen.
