How many times did you see Mr. Davis keep the starters in at the end of games when we were blowing teams out? You didn't. Good coaches don't do that because a.) it's an @ss move toward the opposition's coach and b.) you risk injuring someone you need to make a deep run in the NCAA tourney.
Just because nothing bad happened doesn't mean it wasn't a stupid move.
If you steal and don't get caught, it doesn't make it ok.
So, you are comparing Matt Painter's choice to play his starters when up 20 to a punishable crime?
Hmm.
Like I said, I know where you are coming from (on the surface). But, as stated, a) nobody was injured, b) there are bigger picture things at stake, c) have you ever heard of 'one minute warriors'?
Watch any game that is a blowout. Even when teams are up 20 going into the 4th quarter of a HS game, the starters stay in, 90% of these occasions, for at least 4-5 minutes.
What's the difference?
Are you saying each and every coach, me included, who has done that is 'stupid'?
I bet if I started from Tom Davis' first game as coach at Iowa to his last, I would find you one game in which he broke your golden rule of coaching.
We lost. You were upset so you started this topic because you needed something to pin your frustration on. It's understandable.
It will happen again when Iowa loses: someone starting an 'excuse' type topic.
From the 32:00 I watched of the game, I thought Purdue was EASILY the better team and Painter is a pretty smart coach.
And, people can now see why Vegas is in business. That 19.5 spread looks pretty good now.
Unfortunately.
