Over/Under Totals for Iowa, Rest of Big Ten

8-4 with a bowl win.. assuming they stay healthy

The only real way the Hawks do better is with better than expected QB play in my opinion.

Ok, I've read enough of this rah rah bs. You are not gonna wins 8 games with a qb that has never taken a snap in a college football game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But you say, "what about Johnny Football?". He was one in a million.

Let's all get real here. Good grief.

Gotta love your selective reading skills. But that is kinda where America is right now, which is, "Pick and choose what you want to believe no matter what the truth is".

oh i read it all and understood it all completely. you think we suck and will suck. how did i do? i just found your premise to be extremely flawed especially since you gave an example against your own point.

i know you're an eternal pessimist and that's fine for you. if that's what makes you happy(?) then go for it. me, i'm an optimist. its the offseason. every offseason is a new hope. a new fire is lit. forget last year, its gone. you like to dwell on the negative. i like to focus on the positive. it makes me a happier person. i have no idea how this season is going to go. but expecting terrible doesn't get me too excited for the season and am i real fan if a new season doesn't excite me?

and truth is determined by facts. you have no FACTS to defend your points. so both of us are guilty of being selective on what we believe. we just have different opinions.

1) YOU SAID, "i know you're an eternal pessimist and that's fine for you."

No, I am not. I don't know how anyone could be without going insane. However, I hate it when I'm reading BS. And Iowa's chances of winning 8 games this season would be very low even with a good QB. Will I be hoping they win 8 games? Of course and I hope they do, even if it makes me eat crow.

2) YOU SAID, "you have no FACTS to defend your points."

I'd be upset too if I was reading something from someone that had no facts to back up what they are saying. The reason why I don't think any d-1a team in the nation can win with a qb that's not taken a snap in a college football game (save the big teams like Bama) is because of what I have heard from coaches. For example, I heard Paul Rhoads being interviewed on the radio a few months back. He said that the qb position is so crucial as to a team's success that it's more important than a point guard's role on a b-ball team. I've heard this point driven home by many other coaches and sports writers as well. So, I am not just saying it without any fact behind it.

Final note. I hope you've read some of my posts recently. I am trying to not be at war with the pro ferentz guys on here. I know we'll never agree about ferentz, but that is not the most important thing to me concerning the hawks. The most important thing to me concerning the hawks is their successs. If they win over 8 games, GREAT!!! And I hope this happens no matter who is the coach.

I think the only argument for how this season is going to go....is that we dont know. We havent seen the QB play heck we dont know who its going to be.

Im cant fault a guy for saying he thinks 8 wins. I wouldnt call that crazy. They arent going to make a movie about it if it does happen. Now if you say 10 wins then yes thats a little out there for me.

What I meant was this, "How many times in history do you see a d-1a team have a 8 game winning season with a qb that's not taken a snap?"

The answer is very, very few times. The QB spot is too important to a team. Now could we have a phenom at QB? Yeah, but i's very improbable.

Here is my thought process on Iowa this year and why I am skeptical......

a) the schedule is tough.

b) new, unproven qb

c) an offense that proved to be an absolute failure last year

Just those three reasons are enough to realize that it will be tough (NOT IMPOSSIBLE) to win 8 games.

I'm not being pessemistic, just being reasonable with my concerns with Iowa this year. And please notice I mentioned nothing about the coaching.

This is probably the dumbest post I've ever read on this forum.

I'm just going to list a few so you realize how ridiculous your post is.. and then you can think about just the last couple years in the big10 alone where teams have had young first years do well.

AJ McCarron...
Both Stanford QBs managed the game well enough to win 12 games last year..
Marcus Mariota
Everett Golson

Then you could look back at QBs in Davis' actual system at Texas: McCoy and Applewhite as freshman

If this wasn't enough for you Ricky Stanzi in 08' and JVB in his first game against tOSU... Then looking forward to our actual QB this year, all he really has to do is manage the game. The o-line and running backs are eerily similar to the Orange Bowl season to me, and I think they're going to be very fun to watch.

I understand all of that.

My way of thinking is that in no way should 4 wins of happened last year. None no way shouldnt have happened. Now if Iowa was to win 6 games last year I think most would be comfortable with saying they could win 8 this year.

Now do I think they will win 8 games.....no I dont see that right now but I only have a feeling for the defense.

The big thing is right now is we have no idea what the Qbs look like and we really dont have a good reason as to why none of them took a snap last year.

But the biggest thing is Id be careful not to tell somebody else that their thoughts are BS. As the most attacked poster on the board I think everyone needs to remember that everyone gets an opinion.

i'm not a pro-ferentz guy. i'm an "on the fence about ferentz" guy.

you're basing your facts off of other people's opinions. sure, they have more knowledge to form the opinion, but its still an opinion. the facts are that we don't know what kind of rapport any of our qb's have with the receivers. we don't know how well they know and run the offense. we don't know what kind of moxy they will have when a gametime situation arises. we simply don't know. those are facts. so while you tend to go the negative route, i like to go the positive route. and i think we can both agree that it would be hard for the qb play to be worse than last year. is it possible? sure, but i'd equate the odds of that happening to your example of johnny football earlier.

i guess my problem with you isn't your opinion, its how you deliver your opinion. OOTH is generally polite with how he delivers things unless someone attacks him. he doesn't come in calling other people's opinions BS like you do. opinions that think we will win 8 games this year aren't any more or any less BS than any opinion you have on this upcoming season

Add Texas A&M to that list for last year. They one 10 games and their qb cane into the season with 0 snaps. Iowa can do the same.

Maybe I should clarify. I do believe anything can happen. I do not know what will happen. History proves it's improbable that a team does well with a qb that has NEVER taken a college football game snap.

Are there examples of team's doing well with a qb that has never taken a college football game snap? Of course. It just does not happen often.

Taking all this into account, it would seem foolish to believe Iowa will win 8 games this season.

Wow! Didn't think this was hard to figure for anybody.

Good response, save your calling my post dumb. Look at my other responses concerning your statements. They are covered there.

In 2012, there were 56 FBS teams that won 8+ games. 6 of 56 (10.7%) won 8+ games with a QB who had never before thrown a collegiate pass. 8 of 56 (14.3%) won 8+ games with a QB (or QBs) who had thrown 42 or fewer career passes, with most of those QBs throwing quite a few less than that. In sum, exactly 25% of teams that won 8+ games last year did so with a QB who had either very limited experience or absolutely zero experience.

The following teams did so after their primary quarterback came into the season having never before thrown pass in college:
Texas A&M
UCLA
Notre Dame
Oregon
San Jose State
East Carolina

The following teams did so after their primary quarterback came into the season having thrown very few career passes:
Florida (34)
Northern Illinois (26)
LSU (11)
Louisiana-Lafayette (42)
Arizona State (4)
Oklahoma State (They had 3 QBs split time. 2 had never thrown a career pass. 1 had 49 career pass attempts.)
Navy (They had 2 QBs split time. 1 had never thrown a career pass. 1 had 29 career pass attempts.)
Stanford (They had 2 QBs split time. 1 had never thrown a career pass. 1 had 2 career pass attempts.)

this is what i'm talking about when i say the delivery of your opinion sucks. and exactly what are we trying to figure? we all have heard and understand your opinion. you don't see us winning 8 games for the reasons you gave. great, you're entitled to your opinion. but history shows anything CAN and WILL happen and that is a fact. so people predicting 8 wins is entirely possible.

do me a favor...name the teams we won't be able to run the ball well against. in 2008, ricky stanzi wasn't much more than a game manager. it was pretty much hand the ball to shonn and get out of the way. that team won 8 regular season games.

i feel whatever qb takes over this year will be asked to pretty much do the same. so, basing it off history(like you love to do so much), i think the team has a decent shot at 8 regular season wins.

Wow! Didn't think this was hard to figure for anybody.

To add to that, I can also name one team that had a very experienced SR QB that sucked balls.
For some reason, maybe I am a cockeyed optimist, I just feel that the QB situation will resolve nicely this year.
