OT-Wes Washpun Transferring

Thanks for bringing that up. At that time we lost Caesar to Oklahoma State and still didn't have Woodbury or Gesell. It wasn't looking good. In hindsight, looks like it worked out for all sides. Iowa now has a great PG recruit in Gesell and maybe a steal in Clemmons. Wes is quick and a defensive guard. Had Clemmons not committed, Wes may be a Hawkeye.

Sounds like if Tennessee offers, he's gone. If we can't keep a 2nd tier recruit from Iowa that lives 30 minutes away then this staff has some serious issues. Recruiting is not going well right now and this would be a huge blow at this point. If Washpun doesn't want to play for Iowa what are others going to think?

This is frustrating because this staff has had ALL season to recruit for next year, not 2 months like last season. I understand Cartwright came in May but when you have had all year to recruit you shouldn't have to scramble to find a point guard in May AGAIN! I'm not shocked he'd choose Tennessee but Fran is really struggling with recruiting right now.

That is fantastic.

Locking up a scholarship for 4 years so that he could play Branden Stubbs 39 minutes - total! - this season?!? I don't think so. Clemmons>Washpun, and that's what it really comes down to.

Reading comprehension problem?

1. i said in the original post iowa shouldnt touch him now (because of gessell/clemmons)

2. you realize that iowa didnt have a scholarship point guard when bryce was hurt this season? just saying he would have helped

Come on do we really need to bust Ryno's chops for this? I remember I was pretty disappointed to see yet another D1 recruit out of Cedar Rapids commit somewhere else, wondering when the bleeding would ever stop. It is ok for us to be wrong once in a while after all this is just a forum and hind sight is always 20/20. Plus this kid is young, who's to say he will not catch on somewhere else and have a good collegiate career.

So you contradicted yourself. That's cool.

I think I comprehend just fine: you're saying that we shouldn't touch him now, but we might have wanted to pick him up last summer, I get it. But you can't have it both ways: either we brought him in to help this year and lock up that scholly for four years or we don't. Would he have helped last year? Not at the expense of the next three, no he would not have. Especially because our point guard play was not a glaring weakness on this year's squad.

Is that really a question?

I think we dodged one there. People were saying he wasn't not a B1G player and by what I saw this year, this seems correct.

Too small, and too limited offensively.

Found this gem..

Sometimes I just think it is hysterical how fans make claims with virtually no data or support.

Fran has turned the program around already? Seriously? Lick had about the same amount of wins, in his last year he had more players receiving conference honors, and in Lick's first year he had as an impressive win as any of Fran's. On top of that, Lick had 7 three star (per Rivals) players committed by this point.

Is it more fun watching Fran's team play? Yes. Does it appear he will bring in more athletic players? Yes. Is he more appealing? Absolutely. Has he clearly outrecruited Lick? No way. Has he turned around the program? Not even close. I mean, seriously, there is not one empirical form of evidence that can support that claim.

We hope that isn't the issue soon, but it is still very much a work in progress.

It has looked like scrambling the whole time with this staff. Reaching for kids far and wide and not even remotely connecting with anyone in the more local hotbeds, like Chicago. We thought Lick was bad in Chicagoland, but this staff has raised it to a whole new level.

Time to dump Sherm and bring in someone with some true midwest recruiting moxie. It worked for Webber, it can work for us.

------------
It is NOT because Iowa has five scholarships to give between now and November. It is because Iowa is not even remotely connected to the primary areas of talent in the Midwest.

Players and recruits are talking about liking Francis. Current players are talking about how Speraw is helping them on the court and in practice. Have you heard one word about Sherm? Also, he was the guy who was supposed to have the AAU connections, but there has been nothing from that front, particularly in the Midwest where he was located. Seriously, if we don't get a foothold in the local areas of talent in the Midwest this team is sunk.

So, if a change needs to be made, like Webber made, which turned recruiting around for him completely, of anyone Sherm is the likely candidate. So...

Everything I have heard about Gessel sounds like Iowa's chances are about as good as they were for Barnes, Hinrich, or Paige. Hope I have heard wrong. But that is what I have heard.

Washpun is a tremendous athlete and would have provided depth at the PG spot. He is not a great on the offensive end, but he is a solid on ball defender and can get from end to end. Would I rather have him than the three guards coming in next year? No.

I don't think the kid deserves to be knocked for going to TN and giving it a shot. Martin has a serious class coming in next season and if memory serves, 2 big time guards are part of it. Probably better for him to play for a UMKC, UW-Milwaukee etc. type team .....maybe Valley level as well.

CAARHawk clearly had his finger on the pulse of the Hawkeye basketball program.

Just read that post again. And chuckled again.

He was right. Clearly this staff was "scrambling" and the fact we haven't "dumped Sherman" has resulted in absolute failure in the Chicago area.

Of course, CAARHawk, the staff with no foothold in the Midwest did ok with Plan B. Which is what I like to call Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
