That's a fine idea so long as we let the D-1 guys enter the D-2 and D-3 tourneys.

The D-1 tourney is for D-1 wrestlers. If a D-2 or D-3 kid is of quality and wants to win a D-1 title or be a D-1 all-American, he should put his butt on the line and wrestle at a D-1 school. Period. End of story.

Not period. End of story.

Iowa has only 3 D1 programs. Minnesota only has one. Wisconsin only has one. Nebraska only has one. Missouri only has one. South Dakota has none. There are going to be a lot of D1 calibur wrestlers that wrestle D2 and D3 because there isn't an opportunity. Not because they didn't 'put their butts on the line.'

North Carolina has 8 D1 programs, Pennsylvania has 13 D1 programs, Virginia has 6, etc. Wrestlers in the states on the eastern coast have a huge advantage in getting D1 looks, but not because 'they put their butt on the line' simply because there are way more programs.

By letting in a few guys from D3 and D2 the midwest and specifically Iowa can get a little more exposure for our wrestlers. Everyone always posts those threads with qualifiers by state, and AA by state. Of course the east coast is going to dominate those, look how many programs are out there compared with the midwest.

the stat of all americans per state proved that CR.

i think this is a great idea specially since iowa has so many studs all over! do i think they will be all-americans. some will here and there but i do think they can beat a good share of d-1 athletes.

this would bring a lot more exposure and ratings for tv if we are wanting this sport to be mainstream something needs to be done to get more viewers.

david vs goliath was huge in this years ncaa bball tourny

There may not be a lot of teams but there are opportunities to wrestle D-1. The Dakota schools aren't strong. Neither is UNI. Several of the Illinois schools are also sub par. A kid can also travel further from home to take a chance.

Kids still have a choice: Chase your D-1 dream or chase your D-3 dream. When that choice is made, they chase a different ultimate goal. That's just the way it is.

Spooner, you also forget that not every kid who wrestles in college picks his school solely on wrestling. Location, price, size, family, degree options, and many other things influence a kids choice. D1 isn't always right for every kid regardless of their wrestling ability. Look at Marcus Levesseur. He was the 2 or 3 recruit in the nation and hated Minn so he transferred to Augsburg and loved it there.
Not to mention, when you have a dying sport like wrestling, getting exposure in any positive way is a good thing. getting more people involved from other schools watching on TV, buying tickets etc. Newspapers and TV stations writing about the 'underdog' would be great for wrestling. Plus, spectators would love it.

I don't really understand the downside of this. More matches is a good thing.
The wrestling crowds always seem to root for the underdog (when their own school's wrestlers aren't goin) so I would think this would actually be a good fit.
If Gable wants it, I think they should do it.

gable is an ambassador for this sport and the ncaa officials should strongly look at this option. why not they extended the playing field for bball!

I don't forget that at all. But the opportunity to wrestle D-1 is something a quality young wrestler will have to consider. If other things are more important and they go D-3, that's great, but that decision has consequences and one of them is that their ultimate wrestling title is the D-3 title. The D-1 championships are off the board at that point.

That's my ultimate point: The D-1 championships are for D-1 wrestlers just like the D-2 and D-3 championships are for wrestlers at those levels. I am a spectator and certainly wouldn't "love it." I would find it strange they didn't let a D-1 kid in the D-1 wrestling tourney and let in this kid instead.
