One more year...

we aren't 1 year behind, we are atleast 2 years behind do to transfers. and that would mean if all accounts are true. we would still be 3 years behind next year since we'd lose Fuller and Gatens.

Lick says you need upper classmen for the system to be successful. if no one stays you never have upper classmen.

How do you know Fuller and Gatens are leaving?

None. You will have to take my word for it...but there are other "respected" posters on here that have hinted at the same.

It's always amazing when proof is needed and when it's not. I heard from probably one of the most connected sources on any site about what happened(which is what is coming out now regarding the player meeting), but proofs and links were needed then. :)

Lick's young players have hit a wall and are not used to playing such a long season. They'll take a break, then get back in the weight room and on the floor. They'll be competitive next year after learning from this past year.

Iowa's last three head coaches recruited capable junior college players to fill in for a short bench. Each of our last three head coaches had to dip into the juco ranks from time to time. They each were able to do so. Lickliter either didn't see the need or has the inability to identify and recruit juco talent.

This failure is a huge reason why we were so bad this year. We'll be marginally better next year, which means Lickliter would own the worst 4 years in Iowa basketball history.

It's a little silly to think that this is the best that Iowa can do.

You can't be this naive. It has hit a whole new level of apathy under Lick. Check attendance the last three years under Alford and compare it to Licks. Not a good comparison for your point.

Those numbers still aren't very good and that was when Iowa was a 3 seed in the tourney. Attendance was a problem throughout the Alford-era (except for year 1) and was cited as a problem late in the Davis era as well. Granted, things are worse now and won't get better until Iowa starts winning again but attendance has been on a steady decline for the last 10+ years. To put the responsibility of attendance on Lick is ludicrous.

You're ok with players telling the AD that either the coach goes or they walk?

are you ok with the turnover of starters we keep having? at some point there will be a penalty from the NCAA due to the graduation rate. losing 2 guys, starters no less, would really put us back another year or 2.

You aren't punished if the players are on track to graduate when they transfer. So there isn't a NCAA punishment issue.

There is no way Fuller and Gatens are leaving, regardless of whether Lick stays. If they did leave, I would agree that a change would be needed because we cannot improve if we keep losing our upperclassmen. And Lick losing his own recruits (who are starters) is a big problem. But that is not the case. Gatens and Fuller aren't going anywhere.

Listen, I'm tired of the losing and the threats of transfers every year too but do you think the University has the money at this point and time and a great new hire all ready to go?

The record was expected to be bad the first couple years due to the condition of the program when Lick took over. We're probably a year behind where we thought we'd be due to the transfers, but...

Almost every player that transferred was not a Lick recruited player. Further, the two biggest transfers that had the biggest effect on the program were due to sick/deceased parents, which cannot be blamed on Lick.

With regard to rumors of unhappy players, you can't first someone because of speculation of unhappy players. Plus, the players shouldn't be happy with losing. Also, the rumors are likely more due to the past transfers than the current players attitudes.

Regarding recruiting, Lick's incoming class this year is his best yet and looks to be very solid. Further, Fuller, May, Gatens, Payne, etc. look like solid recruits.

Regarding another posters comments on attendance, ticked off bosters and Lick's system...

The empty arena has been a problem for the last 10 years and will improve as the team improves.

The ticked off boosters = speculation. The boosters are so ticked off that kicked in to get the Carver renovation project started despite Iowa's mens team playing so poorly. Speaking of the Carver renovation project, that should help in recruiting seeing as we will be able to compete with other teams' facilities in the Big Ten very soon.

As the players improve and score more points, the game will be more exciting. It's boring to watch a young inexperienced team try to learn to play in the Big Ten on the fly. Once they learn and are competitive again, it won't be boring. And we shouldn't have to go through this process again because the incoming players won't be thrown to the wolves like the current players.

Clearly you have not been paying attention if you equate 6000 butts in the seats with a ten year problem with attendance. Iowa drew 14,600 for conference games in 06...6000 this year. Iowa sold out for the season at 15,500 in 02. 15,100 in 03. 12,100 in 07. This year? maybe 9000 tickets sold....that is a drop of at least 25% since lick took over. And a drop of 40% from 2003. We have not been averaging 10,000 emply seats a game over the last decade. Anyone that attends or watches the games on TV would have to be blind to not see that this year was unbelivably empty in CHA...the rock bottom since CHA was opened.

money yes. as for the rest I don't have a clue.

I was going to use the actual numbers in my post as well. I'm starting to realize it's a waste of time with some people. If you can't use your own eyes to see what Lick has done to this program, numbers won't help any.

Really? They have the money to buyout Lick and pay up to find a new coach? (which more than likely is around 2 million a year for a splash hire)

Yes they have the money. Go listen to Miller's podcast and you can find out why.

If Iowa could get Pearl I would say go for it. But we would have to pay over $5 million upfront in buyouts to even get our foot in the door and probably offer $3.5 million a year or more. I don't see that happening. I just don't see any other coach that would really want to come. You fire Lick and if Pearl and Stallings turn you down then what? You go after another mid major or assistant? We would be in the same boat with $2.5 million less.

Unless Iowa has a splash hire that's already said they'll take the job right now firing Lick is pretty risky.
