On Jantz's fake jump pass play.....

I think Mike Daniels thought Jantz had thrown the ball, and he let up not wanting to risk any roughing the passer penalty...he had his arms around Jantz's midsection, and let go and stopped...when Jantz took off running, Daniels had a bewildered sort of reaction.

I was thinking the same thing. The last two weeks we haven't been able to wrap the quarterbacks up in the backfield, Daniels finally did, and he let him go. The defensive front has to finish off those plays in the backfield. Albeit Jantz is shifty and elusive, but still, tackle the ball.

Yeah, this is a tough one...after talking with Jared Clauss last night and listening to some of his thoughts that I will be sharing a little bit later in MMQB, I have more optimism that there is room for this DL to grow and get better...I am not talking about them becoming the bullies of the Big Ten, but Jared had some interesting observations.

Agreed. Said the same thing right away to my buddy. Looked like he let go.

My exact reaction as well, as soon as I saw him hold his arms to side, thats the bad thing about getting called for a roughing penalty, his reaction was not wanting to hurt the team in getting another penalty......

100% true.

How you let him go not know for sure is beyond baffling, but par for the course for this past Saturday. At least keep the bear hug on him for an extra count or two...

Good heavens the defense stunk it up...

I view a senior making a serious mental mistake as a very bad thing. Dude has been watching film for over 4 years now.

Purely a product of the rules protecting QBs nowadays. He couldn't risk finishing him off if he'd already thrown the ball. Lo and behold...he still had the ball.

It was a mental mistake, clearly..but I think he was processing the downside of a penalty, so it wasnt like he was not thinking...I suspect he's going to get a late hit penalty very soon, as he won't make that mistake again ;)

You can't overstate how good Jantz was all game. I thought for sure he would force a ball or two into coverage, but he kept it out of harms way the entire game. In typical whatever can go wrong usually does fashion, it seemed like two balls that were tipped at the line of scrimmage could have otherwise been picked - one on the outside towards Prater's direction comes to mind, and the other towards the goal line where the replay looked like Kirksey was all over it had the ball not gotten deflected by a lineman.

I was waiting for a Pick 6 all day. It was inevitable by Janz. And with Hyde and Prater back there, I knew it was coming all the way back for a TD.

But it didn't. So much for that.

It was just plain bad luck..

last week Daniels was called for roughing the passer against Tenn Tech when he hit the QB right as he was throwing the ball. It doesn't completely excuse what happened, but he obviously saw Jantz go to throw the ball and let up rather than planting him in the turf.

A lot of the containment problem for the Hawkeyes was them getting out of their rushing lanes and creating gaps for Jantz to run through. The side containment was almost nil most of the game. They were unable to contain Jantz or that little RB (Hick?).
