Oliver Martin...

There is a quote from Darien Porter of bettendorf i read somewhere who is going to isu, that said something along the lines of wanting to go to a school who uses the wr evenly. How does a kid with that size and speed not get an Iowa offer being from where he's at??
In those cases, I generally assume there is either a character or academic issue. We offer good receivers. The problem is we rarely get them.

Read the book. It was a different time/era. Remember, black athletes weren't always treated well at other schools. Iowa was regarded as being ahead of the curve in that respect, although the "black boycott"--which, ironically, happened while Evy was AD--certainly didn't help.

You asked how Evy did it. I answered. I made no apologies for anyone. That's your tin-foil hat talkin', sport.
So Evy, while coach, accommodated players while KF doesn't? That's the difference? Is it that simple?

My complaint with hiring BF as OC is less about him being related than it is about there being zero evidence that he can take the O to a level higher than it's been.

And, I get what you said about GD- you're right. But, that again gets back to my point about comfort zone > wins w/ KF, right?

I post this on another thread...

Bruce Arians was on Golic and Wingo this morning and one topic was his first NFL head coaching gig. He said something that I've long wished Kirk would say. He told his coordinators and coaches, "You guys go do your jobs and I'll decide whether to go for it on fourth down."
My main reason for optimism with BFs hiring was that he might be the only candidate at this point in KFs career who could loosen the grip on the offensive reigns. When Norm Parker was the DC, I think Kirk felt he could pretty much say 'go do your thing' and not worry about the defense...and we had some great defenses.

I think we've seen some things in the offense we haven't seen in a long time (if at all), but it felt like a back-and-forth tug of war that is always going to be won by KF. But if we accept that Kirk is going to be here a few more years, I think BF is the only person with a chance to persuade KF allow changes on the offense. And that serves not only the current teams and staff, but I think it also would leave the team in a better position for whoever succeeds KF.

All the evidence so far argues against this.
Plus, I've already linked articles in other threads where both men state that no one should expect the offense to operate any differently than it has for the 18 years prior to Brian's promotion.
Stubborn predictability got him his LEGEND trophy. Kirk is gonna always dance with the one who brought him this far.

Interesting article about Oliver Martin. Says that he struggled because of injuries and learning the playbook. Pretty derogatory on the Michigan receiving group in general. Will be interesting to see what happens this year now that he has used his redshirt.

Interesting that he said he had problems grasping the playbook...considering Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black came right in from high school and had an immediate impact last year. So is Martin making excuses or is he just not as smart as those other guys?

Oliver Martin . . . . . . is not a Hawkeye. I know, he went to West High and all that, but this is not Trojannation.com, so I'm not that interested in his failure to grasp the playbook, other than to think that maybe Iowa dodged a bullet.

They should start showing thread titles so people know what a thread is about before they click in it. Oh wait.....

I hope our coaches are at least using this during recruiting. Do you want to play at Iowa or ride the pine at Michigan?

I'm OK with hoping he does well other than if and when he plays against Iowa. And he can do well in those games as long as Iowa wins.

I've got $20 says our two sophomore wide receivers have more catches and more yardage then Oliver does this year.

Oliver will end up being a full time swimmer at Michigan
Quite the leap to assume that since he's currently not swimming at all and hasn't for over a year now. He mentioned that he'd like to do both but so far he's 100% football.

I'm not going too read too much into the whole 'learning the playbook' thing. Most every young receiver as a true freshman is going to have that first year on campus shock to their system. Every college playbook is going to be light years ahead of whatever they are having them do in HS nowadays. He's a great student from what I remember hearing so him talking about that to me is just him acknowledging how tough it is. Not that it's too much for him.

I'm not bashing on him, so please don't take it that way, but with how many times he says it had to be simplified......???
Sure a college play book is more advanced than high school, but it's not like he really had to know what the line is doing or anything. He just had to learn his position and was never going to be asked to slide over into another one.

I guess time will tell. Until either he or the coaches say he's not on the field due to it in some way will we ever know? This will be the first year of him even having the chance so we'll know this fall. I have a feeling he'll be recruited over top of and between the two other freshman that came in the same class he did and other kids he'll just be forgotten about in that way due to talent. Michigan can bring in 6'1 190 lb athletic receivers every day of the week. So for him to stand out he'll have to really play well. It'll be interesting to see if he can cut it there.

I read about this in the Des Moines Register this morning and it included an important quote that wasn't in the Detroit Free Press article, even though I think it originated there.

“(My redshirt) was a little bit (from the injury) and a little bit from processing (things) quickly. Those were the major factors.”

Parenthesis were added by the author of the article, not me. Wonder what the injury part was all about?
