Olaseni

11 min. 8 points 9 rebounds and 2 blks. still perfect from the FT Line on the young season 2 games ago 4-4 and tonight game 2-2 for 8-8 after 9 games avg 1.1 bpg with a total of 10 blocks, Basabe had 36 total last season.

Hes not good. No double double.

I don't think anyone is trashing the kid...just being honest. He shouldn't be playing basketball for a high major team. That's just the bottom line. If you can't see that you have no clue about basketball.

It's okay to say that too. Most high major teams have guys on the team that really shouldn't have gotten a scholarship. Olaseni is just one of those guys.

Well, that's wrong. I'm not all redhautistic on this issue, but I can predict with a reasonable amount of certainty that by the end of his career, Gabe will be seen as a good Big Ten player. I think you represent a minority with this opinion, Gohawks.

I know everyone is cheering for Gabe, but you got to go by the numbers here people. How often do you see a guy average 1 point and 2 rebounds in his second year turn out to be a solid contributor down the road? Keep in mind the competition Iowa has played so far minus the WSU and VaTech games have rivaled some high school teams.

I'm sure there have been times where a guy has blown up between his sophomore and senior year, but it doesn't happen too often. You can pretty much tell how good the player is going to be from the minute they arrive on campus for basketball.

See: Withey, Jeff

Question asked, question answered, Ghost. If you watched any KU basketball during Withey's first two years, you know that Withey wouldn't have sniffed the floor even if there weren't bodies in front of him. He was awful.

Likewise, you need look no further than our own Brad Lohaus, Les Jepson, JR Koch and Erek Hansen for examples of centers who started as scrubs and ended up with post-senior season honors.

I'm not saying it will happen, I'm just saying there's no reason why it can't. Gabe's freakishly talented.

The Erek Hansen comparison maybe the best. Sophmore year (3rd year out of high school) 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds.

Senior year -- Co-Most Valuable Player - - - named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year . . . named to Big Ten Conference all-Defensive team . . . named Defensive all-American by collegeinsiders.com.

So it can happen.

I was just thinking of Hansen, too.

LoHaus was a McDonalds AA out of Arizona one of Lutes last recruits, and did nothing until Mr. Davis arrived and ended up be taken in the 2nd round as the 1st pick by a team that didn't have a 1st rnd pick
Olaseni played just 3 years of Club BB in England, and 1 year in HS ball in Kansas, before coming to Iowa,
he also was offerred, by Alabama and Xavier. so this kid is not a garbage player, he needs minutes,
playing 11 straight minutes in the 2nd half were huge minutes to gain more confidence.

If you are old enough to remember Lohaus and Jepsen when they were freshmen, they were all legs and arms. Tall kids like that are not only trying to adjust to their height but also strengthening and learning how to play major college basketball, let alone getting a college education. Olaseni has another disadvantage having not played the game until he was a teenager.

Olaseni has a lot of work ahead of him to develop his skills but he has height and an incredible wing span that you cannot teach. We can only hope that since he could not redshirt he will not leave Iowa having not had the time to develop into what he could become.

I seem to recall a big for ISU that came in with very limited experience and ended up getting drafted.
akeem the dream for Houston, played in Carver during one of the Hawkeye shootouts and looked like a deer in headlights when he started, he turned out just fine.
many have stated you can teach players but you can't teach height,
according to reports he is now 6'11.
aqlso my bad on what the score was when he came in IA 58 SD 45, A REAL BLOWOUT. for a player to get nothing but garbage minutes, watching the BTN replay

6’11 guys that can run like a deer and jump out of the gym don’t grow on trees. He is our most athletic player north of 6’7. What this team needs is athleticism, and that is why we are all cheering for him. Give him time and he’ll be a nice spark off the bench.

Haven't you learned anything from watching Hawkeye basketball commercial breaks for years and years?

Nothing runs like a Deere.

I hereby declare, pun intended, that Gabe "The Dream" Olaseni shall be his new nickname. So it is written, so it shall be.

good idea to compare GO with an all time great NBA center. they are definitely in the same class.

but, as Ghost noted, he's already gotten the nickname. can't change it now.

Lohaus..... There is ZERO comparison between him and Gabe other than they got a scholarship to play at Iowa. He was a McDonalds AA so one would expect him to eventually be good. Gabe was no where near this level of a player, so you expect Gabe to be as good as Lohaus. OK that makes a ton of sense. If you don't expect him to be as good as Lohaus there is no need to bring Lohaus up.

if not for Mr. Davis he was going no where because of Ravelling. Akeem was not ranked by anyone and Houston was a nobody until Akeem DEVELOPED with coaching.
Houston played in the early Hawkeye challenge because they were looking to make a name for themselves.
stop looking at players on how they finished and compare them wherte they were at in their career.
just like people compare what Gatens did and his responsibility as a senior to what Marble did as a SO and his responsibilities, rather than comparing what esach did IN THEIR SO years.
its funny how often this happens in both sports, comparing how a senior finished vs hown a FR or SO play
in this case comparing how Akeem played as a FR and SO, being a little known commodity is a very good example., lets face it LoHaus was going no where til Davis turned him into a 3 pt shooting PF.
and Akeem was a unknown when he went to Houston

you're right. so i'm going to compare Gesell to Chris Paul and Basabe to Dominique Wilkins from now on as well. this is a good idea.

White = Bird
McCabe = McHale
May = Jordan
what else...?
