Ohio St NCAA Response

My thoughts exactly. If there isn't atleast a 1-2 year post season ban then I would think the NCAA has moved from somewhat shady to full blown corrupt.

Can you name the last team to get a bowl ban without a failure to monitor or LOIC charge? Probably not because I don't believe it's ever happened....

For major, systemic infractions, I would like to see the NCAA bar the coach from D-1 positions for a certain amount of time, along w/ the Athletic Director. The rest can be metered out based on their knowledge/involvement. However, this sort of punishment will assure these guys will have a firm grip on the program (or have people in place who will) and respond promptly to improper interactions w/ boosters. Until it hurts people like Saban, Butch Davis, Tressel, the entire SEC personally and in the pocketbook, it really won't stop.

Weren't you telling us how Tressell's job was safe?

You're a good poster and bring valued insight, especially in the recruiting forum but I think you're too close to this situation to be objective.

You didn't answer my question....

Tressel would have been safe but too much stuff kept coming out. The media avalanche was too much to withstand. When the 2 OSU boosters that donate the majority of the money to the university stopped supporting JT he was doomed.

Can't tell you who the last one was but i can tell you the next one will be Ohio State. No way they make it out of this without losing schollies and a bowl ban.

Tressel knowingly played inelgible players in order to have more success on the field. He deserved to get fired. I remember when Rhett Bomar was caught taking benefits in the off season at Oklahoma. He never played again(at OU), which tanked their legitimate national championship aspirations, and they took away 5 scholarships on their own(the NCAA raised it to 10 later in the process). OSU just slapped the NCAA in the face with this pathetic farce of a punishment. If they are vacating the season, they should be forced to give all the profits their football team earned to a charity. There would at least be some pain with that punishment.

To answer your question, there's a first time for everything. That same media avalanche will all but guarantee the NCAA doesn't hold back on OSU. To be clear, I don't think it will be USC level sanctions but it's going to be more than just vacating 2010 victories.

Three things to remember here:

1. The NCAA wants self imposed sanctions to be harsh. These punishments from OSU are very light. Boarderline laughable.

2. OSU used ineligible players. When teams do this it usually ends with loss of scholarships and bowl ban. USC being the most recent example with 30 lost scholarships and a 2 year bowl ban.

3. In OSU's favor, the NCAA was targeting Tressel, and they got their man. In their report, OSU said they basically forced him to resign. Will this gain points with the NCAA?

Completely false. Once he was caught lying to the NCAA he was done, it might have taken longer, but he still would have lost his job.

One thing that shouldn't get lost in all of this is that the Buckeyes are now still 0-fer against the SEC in bowl games, and their consecutive Big 10 title streak is now done.
