**Official "Let's get this season started" Game Thread**

Played a much weaker opponent in the opener last year and didn't score a TD. The O Line did not play a good game. Offense still needs some work, obviously. I think that the offense will look a lttle different next week. Most breakdowns were around our left guard. Mitch can't block everyone (although he had bad whiff as well) lined up left. Jennings did not look very quick. Each an unexpected problem position.

Have to say, in live action Wetjen is still a flyer with some decent moves. Been a long time since Iowa had anyone that fast on the offense. I think there were no drops, a long time since we saw that on offense. The TEs are even better than last year. This could be a TJ/Fant like season out there. Lachey is an enormous target with a huge catching radius.

USU got a junky TD with the game out of reach and Iowa back in the box just sitting on the lead. Not worried.

Good special teams. The offensive didn't sparkle but it is much improved over last year. The Hawks face a less experienced and kind of disrupted opponent.

Getting punched in the mouth by one of the worst offenses in the country.
They scored a junk TD. Allowing 2 FGs and junk TD is not really getting punched in the mouth.

USU will not be among the bottom offenses in the country this season.

I'
Solid analysis, other than this. Tons of balls hitting hands and not getting caught, which is a death sentence with the lack of separation.
Thanks. I'm think of drops as more Bruce IV-hit 'em in the hands kind of drops.

We didn't get great separation today, I agree. Maybe they showed those jet sweeps with Wetjen to pave the way for him to go deep next week. I never saw Brown going full out but otherwise Wetjen is the fastest guy on offense. Love to see what the kid can do on basically fly routes. I don't think separation will be the problem with him.

They were moving the ball at will when I posted that, but I like how you make it sound like I posted it after the entire game.

You are probably correct about their offense because they don’t play anybody in that conference. If they played in the B1G they would be the worst offense by a mile.

Not to bring up the past but a lot of talk about the O-line and kind of poor performance yet again today. Watching the Bama game and focusing on Proctor… what a difference he could have made. $$$ talks I guess

Any of you with expectations that this thing would be even a half inch different than any other product Brian has put on the field are idiots.

BTW, Iowa's punt return team didn't do a great job. USU's gunners beat the coverage and kept CDJ bottled up completely.

Just turned on the game--you aren't kidding. Just witnessed the Bama OL drive the entire MTSU DL back ten yards on first down, with multiple pancakes. I get that we aren't Bama, but you'd think Iowa of all places could manage a passable OL.

Can't blame him. He's getting paid, and he gets to play in a functional unit.
How much more "functional" do you think this line would be with Proctor? That's what Alabama's money does for it, and we cannot compete with that money. No Iowa coach is ever again going to sign guys like that, unless NIL becomes equally limited by school.

The OL played OK. Not good run blocking but pretty impressive pass blocking. Cade didn't have defenders close to the QB more than a handful of plays. The one sack was either Hayden Large or another TE missed that block. (8 was the first digit in the number). Cade wasn't' really affected much by the little pressure he saw except for a demonstration of his pocket mobility compared to Spencer Petras. Completed quite a few deeps shots. Still high on the passing game. We'll see some growth next week.

When we settled for a field goal near the end of the first half, we had two drops, both of which would have been TD’s.
Got the ball at the 46 with around 4 minutes to go. 12 plays / 44 yds / fortuitous penalties later we kicked the field goal.
Ineptitude in every aspect - play calling & execution

You cannot have it both ways. If the dropped balls were on plays that would have been touchdowns then they were perfectly called plays that should have been touchdowns.

The problem can be (and is) both poor execution and questionable play calling.
Sometimes it is execution - dropped balls, missed blocks, personnel mismatches, etc.
Sometimes it is play calling - running into stacked box with safeties crashing because everyone in the stadium knows the play, slow developing plays on 4th & 1, schematic mismatches, etc.
Every team has these issues. The good ones have less than the bad ones.
Iowa has too many of both.

Couldn't help but notice he was starting at LT snap one for Bama... That's pretty wild for a true freshman. My guess is he was all but promised that at Bama along with $$. He and his family tried saying that NIL wasn't a factor and Bama wasn't blowing his doors off in that regard but I don't buy that either.

Iowa has Richman at LT and I bet Proctor wasn't going to be supplanting him no matter how much better he may have been then him. That's just how the Ferentzs are. Proctor knew that and probably didn't want to start off at RT or guard like he would've had he been a Hawk. Saban probably told him what he wanted to hear that LT would be his day 1 and what do you know he kept that promise and it is what it is.
