Official: Iowa at Arizona 9:30 central kick

It's not ideal...

I agree..and they should not schedule these again...i wrote that after the ASU debacle back in 2004.

Now, that was Tate's first road start...Stanzi is a vet, and this team went through a road gauntlet last year so it won't be their first rodeo...but starting a game when your body says its 9:30pm and waiting around all day, not a good thing.

but Iowa hasn't exactly played great on the road in the non-conference against teams not named Iowa State. This is going back 20+ years. What's the last good non-conference road win (not counting bowl games or Iowa State)? Miami of Ohio in 2002? Iowa did win 15-14 at Arizona in 1987. Northern Illinois in 2007 at Soldier Field is a technical "road game" but Iowa had majority of the fans.

I'll choose to look at it as a nice opportunity for this year's team to change some history :)

Part of the problem in 2004, was the game was delayed like 90 minutes because of rain so that really threw a monkey wrench into the pre-game prep, etc

I think people often forget that the game was delayed, that may have had more impact than that initial start time.

Have you ever traveled to the West Coast? You end up waking on your own at like 4am and want to be in bed by 8:30 the first few nights.

Yes, several times. I'm sure these players will be adjusting their sleep schedule several days in advance of the game to get their internal clock adjusted. Not that big of a deal.

Line up and play football, I don't care what time it is! I'm pretty sure Iowa knew they'd be playing under the lights in Arizona in September.

All I know is that I recall Kirk talking about how much he hated playing west coast night games...and I bet this will be the last one that he plays as the schedule for the future is now in his hands and has been since he took over.

I think he hates them because they fly home right after the game and usually don't get into IC until 6 am on Sunday morning and that basically kills a day of prep for the coming week. I know they mostly just do film work on Sunday's but you still need some sleep to be able to concentrate on the film. Good thing Iowa has a bye the following week in Ball St.

I agree I don't see KF scheduling any future teams from the west either.

Its funny how the game time starts didnt have an effect on the Orange Bowl or any of the night games we played last year. I cant believe we beat GT when we had to wait around ALL DAY to play that game. I mean darn, college kids having to sleep in a little later. Im sure they will be furious. If you think we lost to ASU because of the kick time in 2004 then Jon, you should stick to carrying Deace's jock.

I am sorry but the kickoff time alone doesn't get you beat like they did @ASU......

+1

Too big of a deal is made about the start time. Remember how we couldn't win at Penn State at night???

It's all about being properly prepared and mentally ready to go. I think the coaching staff has learned a lesson or two on that front over the years. We might not win @ Arizona, but it will have virtually nothing to do with the start time.

Dude, we traveled East for the Orange Bowl and other night games last year. If you don't think start times matter, I know a bunch of bookies who would love to meet you. As for the ASU game, we got a**-kicked so I don't think it would have changed the outcome, but it didn't help our cause either.

I agree, ASU had more to do with that *** whoopin then the start time. When a team has less than 100 yards of total offense for the game it really won't matter what time you start a game as you probably aren't going to win.

We couldve played that game at 2 in the afternoon or 4 in the morning...either way we were in for a complete beatdown. No excuses, if we are going to be a contender we need to win games like this no matter what time its played

That is what I was saying, Iowa laid a big egg that night and I don't think the start time was that big of an issue. Adrenaline will eventually take over anyway so fatigue won't/shouldn't be a big issue.

OK dude, Id like to see some data from your bookie friends that prove your thesis.

I sure hope we dont make the BCS game this year, its a 7 PM kick in the desert. Were screwed if thats the case. Were better off shooting for early starts in Florida bowls, that way we don't have to worry about sitting around all day.

This game could be played at 3AM and Iowa is still going to stomp this team.

No point in comparing the ASU game. It was 6 years ago!!

Jon I think you have an admirer.

All he is say is if everything else is even AZ has an advantage due to this. In a bowl game you are at the location for up to 10 days, their bodies and minds have adjusted to the time difference.

Lighten up amateur.

Come on Jon, Iowa already plays through 8 hour swings - 11 am and 7 pm CST. So this is a 10 hour swing vs. our already experienced 8 hour swings, when you account for the time zones. Kind of splitting hairs here, aren't we?

Of all the variables involved with 20 year old kids playing consistently, an extra two hours seems like a relatively minor one.

I think the biggest pitfall for a team like this is those 11 am home games we're expected to win (Indiana, Arkansas State and Northwestern come to mind). These kids seem to like the lights and a few extra cameras on them.

Kirk probably prefers that Iowa play every game at 8 am. Not sure he'd prefer the salary adjustment if big time fan interest and television ratings weren't part of the deal though.

Are you being intentionally dense? The Orange Bowl was played on the EAST COAST. Meaning that a 7 pm start there feels like 6 pm to the players. Out on the WEST COAST, a 7 pm start feels like 9 pm to the players.

He's not saying that the start time was WHY we lost to ASU. But to say it didn't have any impact at all is just stupid. Tate was making his first road start, ASU had a very good team. But the start time, plus the 90 minute delay were also important factors.

Hey Jon, don't you think we are reading too much into this? Didn't all of these guys play under the lights on Friday nights in high school?
