Notre Dame tantrum

Here's the end-all:

8 team playoff...

--Top 2 finishers in each P4

--First round is 1/2 in each conference and serves as the CCG thus killing 2 birds with one stone and not adding an additional game. No legitimate complaints because all 135 teams have a clear cut, non-ambiguous path to the playoffs. You want in, finish at least 2nd in your conference. The NFL, NBA, and MLB all have defined playoff rules, these guys are pro athletes now so no whining. No committees deciding Alabama is better than ND or vice versa.

--Keep 12 bowl games as the "official" bowls and these are not part of the CFP. That way it will still mean you're a damn good team to make one. Sorry Pop Tart fans.

--Allow each FBS team not in the playoffs to play in one game after the season. Do whatever you want as far as scheduling/location/etc. Practice as long as you want. But they're not an official Bowl Game. That keeps the vacation/band parents/spirit squad folks 100% happy.

Now...that should be enough to appease everyone, but I think what really grinds the gears of people who like 41 bowl games, is my suggestion that they not be called bowls. Is that really the hang-up? We want to say we made a bowl after a 6-6 or 5-7 season? Because that's a participation trophy the way it is now to play in the "Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl."
Okay, Fry. I think the root of our disagreement boils down to simple semantics.

We both agree there should be a playoff that is separate and apart from the bowl system. The best teams make the playoffs and we call their games what they are: quarters, semis, etc.

Then we have a limited number of bowl games that are in line with the power/traditional bowls that existed back when Hayden Fry was our coach. Those limited bowls are for the next tier of teams that just missed the playoffs, but still had a strong season. Generally speaking, the Top 25 gets into a bowl or gets into the CFP. Both of which are a real honor because they are elite.

Then, we can keep Pop Tarts or Pin Stripes or whatever the F these things are called today, but we just cannot call them a bowl. Calling them a "bowl"is offensive to Fry and other college football purist. I can live with that. So, we just need to come up with a different word to slap at the end of Meineke______. How about cup?

The Pop Tart Cup!
We missed out on a bowl this year, but we still made a nice Cup.
What channel is the Pin Stripe Cup on?
My God, how many Cups do they play in Orlando every year.
There are so many opt outs, not sure we could field a team for a Cup anyway.

A few examples...

Saturday, Dec. 13

i
i
Cricket Celebration Bowl

South Carolina State vs. Prairie View A&M

Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta)
Noon, ABC

Thursday, Dec. 18

i
i
Xbox Bowl

Missouri State vs. Arkansas State

Ford Center at The Star (Frisco, Texas)
9 p.m., ESPN2

Friday, Dec. 26

i
i
GameAbove Sports Bowl

Central Michigan vs. Northwestern
Ford Field (Detroit)
1 p.m., ESPN

i
i
SERVPRO First Responder Bowl

Florida International vs. UTSA
Gerald J. Ford Stadium (Dallas)
8 p.m., ESPN

IMO if bowl games were to die these would be the last to go. An athlete attending Prairie View A&M does not have hopes of ever playing for the NC and very few of them have hopes of ever playing in the NFL. These bowl games are a treat for them.

I'm 100% on board.

Bring back the 12 bowls, name the other 29 anything you want, we're golden.

I like "The Snoop Dogg Cup" better than "Snoop Dog Arizona Bowl."

As Flo so eloquently said years ago, "Sprinkles are for winners." Not 5-7'ers.

The derivation for "Bowl" comes from the Rose Bowl. They started calling the game at the Rose Bowl the Rose Bowl, and apparently, the other bowls formed and just tacked on "Bowl" to their names. Weird. So, the term is really stadium related. But, Pop Tart Stadium just doesn't ring. I also like cup because a cup and a bowl both hold liquid.

Interesting fact, Lamar Hunt of the Chiefs coined the term "Super Bowl."
Jackie Moon of the Flint Michigan Tropics coined the term "Flint Michigan Mega Bowl."

Call it the "Tournament of Cheez-Its"

Call it the "Wasabi Fenway Smackdown"

Call it the "Tony the Tiger Shootout"

Just don't call them bowls. Keep at least something sacred in this world.

The university of nebraska-lincoln adapted the use of the term "Super Bowl" to it's annual Black Friday game.

I like every former crappy bowl having to come up with their own title, but prohibited from using the term "bowl." That said, when you have desecrated a word this badly, I am not sure it can ever become "sacred" again.

Exclusivity is probably a better term.

I would like to see an anonymous poll of college football players whose teams are not bound for the CFP.

One question: Would you rather practice an additional month and then travel and play an exhibition game over the holidays, or no?

Some of the argument being put forth is that eliminating bowls is robbing these players of a special opportunity. I wonder how many of them actually want it?

It is probably like the recent study about Tik Tok/Instagram on campuses. Students were asked how much they would have to be paid for THEM to give up these apps (while everyone else kept them). They indicated between $50-60 on average. But when asked about making the apps go away for everyone, students indicated they would PAY money for that to happen ($10-30). In other words, they felt trapped by the product...they couldn't get by without it as long as everyone else had it, but they would rather it didn't exist.

I could see CFB players looking at bowls similarly. If other teams are going to bowls, they sure as heck want to go to bowls. But deep down, they would rather the season wrapped up and they get to hang out with their family on the holidays if there is no championship on the line.

Only after we prohibit the news media from calling any potential political scandal " ----- gate"

Maybe someone mentioned this here already, but if we got to a point where we kept 12 bowls, then for any teams that didn't make one have like 5 extra games where players who want can enter their names in a draft. Could be fun to see teams get mixed up. Would lead to some wild playground plays and weird schemes if all they have is 2 weeks to prep. A lot of it would be on the fly, seat of the pants.

At one time these "Bowl" names made some sense. A bowl full of oranges, sugar, and peaches made sense. I can even get behind a bowl full of gator, gator meat in a stew perhaps. I can see bowls full of cotton and roses too I guess. But a bowl of sun or liberty?

When they started out and were called bowls because of the stadium shape, like you said made sense. Then as time went on and only the elite teams got invited it meant something status-wise and then eventually the 12 "main" bowls came into existence. Once that was established it was a pretty big achievement because it meant you were one of the best 24 teams in the country. It meant a lot.

Then obviously we somehow devolved into 41 "bowl" games because of money, and it was diluted down to 1 PPM. And to fill it out with 82 teams you had no choice but to invite squads with losing records.

That's my beef. My beef is not with playing extra games. Play 5 extra games if you want, just don't call them bowls. A bowl game for almost a century meant something and carried status. I think we can bring back that status present state and still play extra games.

If you're say, the #13 team in the country you should be recognized with exclusivity. It took a lot of success in a tough environment to get there. A 5-7 team or 6-6 team does not deserve that. But let them schedule a game if they want a trip for their players, fans, staff, and bands.

The narcissism of ND is on full display.
ND just puts a bad taste in my mouth. They are such assholes. They want all the benefits of being a part of a conference but don't want to have to contribute or do what you need to do to be in a conference. This is being the proverbial taker and not a giver.

It's so pathetic.

The senior bowl, but for anyone, and I say mandate player-coaching.

Filling up my social media feeds as well. I had no idea there were this many ND fans here in Iowa.

The best one was several ND fans complaining about James Madison and Tulane getting in. The top 5 ranked conference champions getting an auto bid was a criteria everyone was fully aware of. JOIN A CONFERENCE!

100%.

ND should go start their own conference and playoffs and see how many teams join (and how much money they make).
