Notre Dame says they prefer Independence

And you are completely missing my point, which is why give ND almost $2 million when they are sitting at home on their couches, contributing absolutely nothing to the BCS bowl revenues? If they that guaranteed coin, they should join a conference like everybody else. If they want to stay indy, then they shouldn't get the payout unless they earn it by getting selected. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

No, I completely understand your point. I answered it in reply #56.

I hate ND, but I don't hate them for the sake of hating them. Frankly, I have ZERO problem with their BCS setup. They actually arguably have a tougher road Independent than they would if they were in a conference because of the ranking requirement.

So, yeah...I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill.

The appropriate way to deal with ND is to cut them out of an annual slice of the BCS pie if they don't qualify for one of the BCS bowls. Right now, they get a guaranteed $1.7 mill just for making themselves "available" to be chosen, even if they win only 3 games. This is why they can be so cavalier about turning down lesser bowls - they get an automatic BCS payout regardless and can just pocket the cash.
Wow. I didn't realize that. Do all independents get something or just ND? Is this just part of the BCS arrangement or did they get $ for not going to a bowl game before the BCS? I really don't understand why they get paid for a game they have nothing to do with.

Just ND. It's built into the BCS arrangement.

BCS Explained, Bowl Championship Series

They get paid because they are ND and when ND is in the BCS then ratings are historically higher. It was also a concession made in order for them to accept a mere $4.5M per BCS game when they are in one instead of taking home the entire $18M for participating in a BCS game.
