Not that it matters

I just watched the 1st half of the game (DVR) and here are a few comments:

1) Aaron White needs to be a starter. I don't care if its the 3, 4 or 5 but that kid needs to be on the floor most of the time.

2) One of our starting guards is worthless. Oglesby needs to be on the floor most of the time.

3) Is it legal to have a 7' cardboard cutout and run him on the floor? If we could it would be an improvement at the C position. Yes one of them was hurt and the other has a torn labia and the other is a freshman but no talent at all? come on.

4) We missed a ton of wide open shots. A TON. The shots ranged from right under the basket (Gatens getting his *** handed to him like usual), to 7' bunnies to three pointers that were uncontested. Our shooting is AWFUL. The rotation was good, the penetration was decent but the shooting just makes me shake my head. The guys at the local Y shoot better than that.

5) Fran is getting ******.

6) O Basabe, O Basabe wherefore art thou Basabe?

Oh and bye the way, Hightower can kiss my ***. He still finds ways to disrupt the game and make himself feel important. The call he overturned at the 18:00 mark was BS. He got fouled and ol' Eddie decides to get involved and call it a travel. Fran just about had a coronary right there of the floor.

I agree with this post 100%. Oglesby must start. White should be starting. Basabe needs more minutes.

These things will happen soon, IMO.

Excellent post. I would even throw Stoakes and McCarty into the mix for a few minutes here and there. Can they worse than what we have seen thus far?

What has happened to show that Basabe needs more minutes?
I know Basabe can play. He showed it last year. He needs to play 30 minutes to get into a flow and play himself back into shape.

Either you believe in the kid or you don't. Fran is playing 10 players - it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I still wish you would tell me if you agree with playing so many kids. I find it hard to believe that it will continue.

If you want to build for the future, play the underclassmen and bench several of the older players. It only makes sense. We are building for the future now. This team won't win 11 games.

Please understand that i do not pretend to have any answers whatsoever. I did play basketball competitively, and I firmly believe that you don't learn much when a coach plays 10 kids. No one develops any real confidence, because they aren't on the floor enough. At some point Fran must boil it down to 7 or 8 getting all the minutes.

Just a thought.....

Agreed. Basabe should not come off the floor unless he is in foul trouble, period.

Iowa missed 8 treys tonight, but they missed 32 shots inside the arc. That is just ridiculous.
It is amazingly frustrating isn't it? I predicted 17 or 18 wins and bought season tickets.

I still cannot understand why Basabe and Cartwright are playing so poorly after the seasons they had last year. Can someone explain it to me? Why does this happen to us? Heck, Robbie Hammel at Purdue can come back from two major knee surgeries and play as well as ever, if not better. Why do our two stars not show up this year? This doesn't make sense to me

I won't argue with this thought process at all.
Just seems like Mel was given ample opportunity at the beginning of both halves and still couldn't get it going tonight.

I think Mel Basabe is one of the biggest riddles in the history of Iowa BB. There is no way that a kid can show so much promise last year and regress this much. It simply defies logic, and is really the reason why this team is underachieving. Cartwright also is a complete riddle.

It would be similar to a situation where Vandenberg next year completes 40% of his passes after completing 60% this year. Your brain tells you it can't happen, but then it happens. It makes no sense.

Seriously?? What am I missing here, please elaborate?
I think the point he is trying to make is that Basabe doesn't come out of his funk by sitting on the bench. He needs to play, based on the potential he showed last year.

Perhaps it is flawed, but that is the argument.

I watched an amazing show on Coach K the other night (on ESPN). One of the things he said was that every player is unique. Some players respond to tough treatment; some melt when the coach does that, and then a different approach is necessary.

They are putting tremendous pressure on Basabe, but frankly not giving him many minutes. Pat him on the back and let him play. Eventually he will come out of it. Which big man is better than Basabe? McCabe? Brommer? May? Really? Why not play Basabe and be patient?

I agree that Basabe needs to be playing more. I think the kid is having a hard time adjusting to not being the only option on the floor, and getting into the flow with added depth. Last year without any depth he was forced to be an athlete and just show his skills. He needs to be allowed to still do that(cause frankly there still isn't too many more options). We need to lean on him to make plays. He's too hesitant.

I also agree that Ogelsby and White should not only be playing more, but possibly starting. There wasn't anything to be impressed with last night, but I thought Ogelsby showed confidence in his ability handling the ball and creating his own shot. He just needs a few more to fall.

And White is just flat out sneaky athletic. He' got great feet and the ability to create a mismatch. Unfortunately he's just not very strong yet.

Last year Basabe did not score his points when trying to take his opponent one-on-one. He scored his points on put backs and motion without the ball. This year it appears that Fran is looking to have Basabe be more of a possession player where he has the ball in his hands and then tries to make plays. It clearly isn't working and if you read into Frans comments after the game last night I think we will see that change.

Basabe needs to be on the floor....period. He is in a funk but the kid has a lot of basketball talent. There is a difference between a player like him and a player like May who has reached his ceiling.
