Not that it matters

White needs to be playing the three. That is his position of the future and there is no reason that he shouldn't be playing it right now. Oglesby is stuck behind Gatens right now as they both have similar games.

I agree that both White and Oglesby need to start.

I disagree on more minutes for Basabe, he just is not good this year. I don't care if he fails to score all game but to be out hustled for rebounds is not an indication of he needs more minutes. If anything he should get less minutes.

I understand your frustration, but this is recipe for single-digit wins. We flat out need Basabe to be good. If we don't have him, we don't have a single credible inside scorer, and obviously we aren't good enough on the perimeter to overcome that. Somehow, someway, Fran has to get him to the point where he can play 30+ minutes and be effective vs. Big Ten opponents. It's not like we've never seen him do it before.

Ferentz cant get his team "up" according to posters on here and the football program needs a complete makeover.

Fran cant seem to get his team ready to play in games and the solution is to give the players that arent producing more playing time.

The Iowa fanbase is bi-polar.

Last year Basabe did not score his points when trying to take his opponent one-on-one. He scored his points on put backs and motion without the ball. This year it appears that Fran is looking to have Basabe be more of a possession player where he has the ball in his hands and then tries to make plays. It clearly isn't working and if you read into Frans comments after the game last night I think we will see that change.

Basabe needs to be on the floor....period. He is in a funk but the kid has a lot of basketball talent. There is a difference between a player like him and a player like May who has reached his ceiling.
I agree with this. The most startling part of Basabe's start is the lack of offensive rebounds. That's where he got a lot of his points last year. Just cleaning up the glass and getting putbacks. Maybe that's a function of where we're positioning him in the offense since we're trying to run things through him?

Dumbest post of the year.

Ferentz has been head coach at Iowa for more than a decade. 100% of the players on his team have been recruited, scouted and molded to fit his style of play.

Fran on the other hand is in his 2nd yr of coaching a HORRIBLY untalented basketball team with leftovers from a system that added players on a 'will you come play for us' mentality.

The guys that have been added (Basabe, Cartwright, White, Oglesby) are >>>>>>>>>> than (Brommer, Archie and May). McCabe and Marble were recruited and signed and then resigned so technically they would be placed in the Brommer, Archie, May group and the Basabe, Cartwright group would still kill them in a pickup game. Gatens would have played at Iowa even if any of us were the head coach.

What's my point? The kids can't play the uptempo game that is required by Fran but Fran knows he isn't going to win many more games playing slow ball and he knows emphatically that the kids he wants and needs won't come to a place where they play slow ball so he is stuck.

The team is full of young players that are going to be far better than the older players and can play the uptempo game. We don't have depth at PG and our C position is god awful. Both of those are not just helped but they are fixed completely next year. Two top shelf Cs are coming and two top shelf PGs are coming. Add in White, Basabe and Oglesby and you now have a team that can play.

I thought Marble worked on his shooting over the summer, still brick city with him. Horribly flat shot just like last year.
Anyone else wonder why we full court press? We don't have the athletes to. In my opinion, it also just wears Cartwright out fast. With only one legit PG on the team, I think it would be smarter to try and conserve some energy for him. Even though he hasn't played well yet, when he goes out it gets even worse.
May is just awful and hasn't improved a lick, should be played sparingly. Agreed Ogs and White need more PT.
McCabe to me, seems like the only one who is somewhat improved from last year.

That is what is most disappointing thus far, is the lack of any sign of improvement by most of the guys on this team.

We press because that is what the team will be doing in the future. Teach the kids that are on the team now how to do it and they will be able to help teach the kids that are coming in. If you wait until you have all of the players that you need to start implementing the offense / defense then its too late. Plus you won't get the kids you need / want if you don't show them what they will get once they arrive on campus.

This is Yr 2 of a complete overhaul of the basketball program.

I understand this to a point, but you still have to try and do what gives your team the best shot of winning. Most good teams we play will break our press with no problem. Just not sure what it accomplishes. We can still play up tempo and instill our offense and defense without pressing. A press is something we can implement any time IMO when needed or when we have depth. Can anyone name a top 10 team that presses the entire game right now? Probably is some, just can't think of any.

My post had to do with the effort that the basketball team has showed this year and how people are continually calling the football team out for lacking intensity, not with the talent on each team or who was responsible for bringing that talent in.

Ferentz is awful and Fran is the man say the idiots on this board. Why the double standard? The effort by the Iowa basketball team the last few games, especially Marble and Basabe, is somewhat disturbing.

I can't figure out why we are in no man's land again with this program. Other teams don't get Duke and OSU level talent, but they play together and at least show some semblance of structure and cohesiveness. We look like a rec league team that got assembled 15 minutes before the first game.
