Noah Fant and Outsey

George Kittle is now the only Iowa TE with any career catches. Outsey was in line to be the 2nd TE and had some limited playing experience. I am wondering and hoping that Fant made such an impact and push in the spring that Outsey could tell his playing time could be threatened. Here's an ESPN article on Fant who could be a surprise Hawkeye this year as a freshman stepping in at that crucial position for Iowa. It sounds like Fant has some great skills along with some terrific speed for a TE. I can't wait to see what the young man can do.

Fant just got to camp about a week ago from high school. He is a true freshman.

Outsey was probably getting jumped over by Wisnewski and Pekar not to mention the incoming freshman that will be hungry. I don’t think losing him was going to affect much. He was a LB convert so who knows what his potential even really is at TE… Iowa signed 3 TEs for this class Fant is just one of them. Hopefully one of them emerges. I won’t claim to know which ones of those freshman will make an impact and play this year. But I think it’s pretty safe to say they’ll all get the chance to show what they can do. My guess is 2 of them will not be redshirted and one of them will just depending on how the camp goes injuries etc. I sure hope that Kittle stays healthy. I say put the red jersey on him for camp…

That best newcomer piece is one of ESPN more worthless ideas they have come up with.

They are basically trying to predict which incoming freshman is going to have the biggest impact on each team this year, which usually is a complete crapshoot.

I don'the think ESPN has any clue what the coaches have planned for Noah Fant or any other freshman.

With all that stated, you never know, maybe he will see playing time right away, but I doubt it.

I wouldn't call it worthless. It generates interest and gets people talking if nothing else. Fant's got skills and I don't dislike his confidence.

Well, it's not as bad or worthless as ESPN's home brewed rating matrix's. Those are absolutely absurd. I like that it points out the freshman who may see playing time. It's a pretty benign article or concept compared to much of the other frivolous crap they do, IMO.

Yeah, he was getting passed up I think. When Ferentz was asked about him in the spring, he completely avoided answering.

Why would you think he was getting jumped? What source do you have? We have NO idea why he left and it is annoying to me and many others when people start speculating without a clue. He was recruited as a LB but he played TE all through HS, so he wasn't really a 'convert'. We may someday know why he left (when HE feels like telling someone), but in the meantime it's all speculation because KF doesn't ever talk about why kids leave etc... Unless there are a couple injuries ( like when Al Reisner was a freshman), I highly doubt any of the incoming TE's ever sniff the field, but I'm just speculating....but at least I admit I'm just speculating. My prediction is that Kittle and Pekar will see almost all the reps unless there is an injury or 2. Oh, and losing the no. 2 TE in your depth is always going to have an affect...Appartently the coaches knew his 'potential' or they wouldn't have had him on the field as the 3rd TE in their 3 TE sets (mainly short yardage and goal line) last year......

So it annoys you when people speculate without a clue or is it just that the speculation is different from yours?... Because in the same paragraph you admit you do it and say it's ok because you admit it up front? Gotcha, because what I said I wanted people to take as absolute gospel (kidding)... Look by no means do I know with any certainty I have no sources inside Fort Kinnick either. I just think he was being jumped on the depth chart because it's logical and with the large group of TEs in the class behind highly thought of the writing was on the wall it'd be really tough for him to get on the field both this yr and down the road. And I mentioned also that I have no idea where the musical chairs will fall with the freshman coming in. I think one will for sure see the field this year just based on numbers and 2 wouldn't surprise me. I think someone will get some snaps. How many and how significant of them is any ones guess.

Go to the earlier Outsey has left the building thread.

There is a Rob Howe quote about half way down the page: "He was behind Kittle, Wisnieski, Pekar and Vejvoda with Hockenson, Fant and Beyer coming in this year."

I'll take that as fairly solid information. It also seems in line with what others have been saying. Remember that Outsey was listed as #2 at the beginning of March, based after a short trial at the TE position. It appears that his development really didn't progress as much as hoped this spring. As far as I can tell the depth chart has not been updated since before spring practice.

A few different articles by Howe and others stated we was 3-4 deep on the chart, with a couple high star recruits yet to arrive.

I wish him the best. Thought he showed flashes last year, but understand him wanted to get some pt. If he was even 3rd on the chart, it was unlikely. Not really speculation when more than one article references it.

Speculation is pretty much what message boards exist for though. But that's just me speculating.

It's a good thing you admitted you were speculating. I was annoyed for a second.

Ok, I'm glad a few of you got my sarcasm, but seriously, do you folks really believe everyone just 'jumped' him in the 3 weeks between when the depth chart came out and the spring game??? He was the 3rd best TE last year (he was the only other TE that saw the field beside KC and Kittle) and he only switched to TE last fall, so obviously he had potential and they saw it. Good grief. Like I said, something happened that we'll probably never know about (sexual misconduct, grades, etc, etc...) is why he decided (or 'they' decided) it was best to 'go somewhere else'. I will try to get the inside story this summer from a kid I know who's a starter on offense, and I will get back to you. I won't throw the kid under the bus, so I won't give any details, I'll just let you know if I'm right. Think about it, people just don't get passed by everyone on the depth chart in 3 weeks.... doesn't work that way.....something happened off the football field...........

Oh, and even Rob Howe is 'speculating' or giving his opinion half the time.......and Iowa incorporates 3 TE sets quite often, so whoever said that even if he was 3rd on the depth chart doesn't mean he won't get any PT is mistaken....

You may be over thinking this a bit. He was losing ground on the depth chart (per speculation) and wants more pt. It's not a new thing.

Bet me! We'll probably hear the 'truth' somewhere down the road.... But I can almost gauranty you he didn't leave because he was 'slipping' down the depth chart and wanted more PT.....

Tell me about Fant's blocking skills before I get excited about him getting PT/making impact. PlsNThx.

Exactly. NObody saw Jonathan Parker getting tons of reps before his True Freshman year in 2014. ESPN certainly didn't, anyway.
