No off position on the genius switch

I've already stated that the BBall team should be improved next season because of the upgrade in talent.

Now I look at the football team.

QB - embarrassment of riches. Stanley/Weiger/Cook all 4 stars by at least one service. All 3 can lead Iowa to a West title.

RB - Wadley is an all-american in the making. Everyone on the board thinks Toks is better than Daniels and DMX. I have no idea why, but if he is then we have our 1-2 punch. What do we have in the other running backs? Not sure, but most years we have plenty of talent at RB and my gut says this year is no different.

FB - Drake is good for Iowa . . . Kulick is great for Iowa. Like RB, Iowa usually has good FBs. This year will be no exception.

WR - run . . . hide the children . . . I'm about to talk about everyone's favorite position. There's a guy named Smith who is poised for a breakout season. And his first name ain't Jerminic. Will he be given the chance? I hope so. Will Vandy be healthy? I hope so. If Brandon and Vandy were the starters in September would that be a good thing? Yes. What about the other receivers? They haven't shown much, but maybe with some improved coaching they will surprise us.

TE - Iowa under Fry and Ferentz always has good tight ends. This year will be no different. A position of strength, as usual.

OL - Hey did you guys know the O-line won some sort of national award last year? It's true!! And this years group has more talent than last years. Daniels is an NFL star in waiting.

Kicker - You can't spell awesome without d-u-n-c-a-n. SHUT UP! This ain't a grammar quiz.

Punter - I have no clue <------------------- LOOK, YOUR CHANCE TO BE CRUEL TO SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOW AND MAINTAIN YOUR ANONYMITY AT THE SAME TIME. Stop wasting your time torturing the neighbors pets and aim some of that venom at me.

DL - better than last years. The Full Nelsons are big and talented. Parker has already proved himself. Bazata? The coaches obviously love him, but, IMO we have guys bigger and better. Throw in Epipen and this defensive line is lethal.

LB - The Outlaw has blazing guns that can't be matched. I give Neiman a "B". Bower? Like Bazata, the coaches obviously have a crush on him. I think among the other backers we have better, starting with Mends.

DB - Rugamba is the next King!!! Snyder can hold his own. Joshua Jackson has shown flashes. Miles Taylor is the weak link. Hooker should be given a chance to take the position away from him.

Punt/Kick returns - Young and Vandy are slated for this. Intrigued by Young but would like to see someone other than Vandy back there. Vandy is too important at WR and I don't see this position as his strength anyway.

Now for the grades.

QB = A (everyone says Stanley is better than CJB. Great, all CJB did was win his first 13 starts. No pressure.)

RB = B (if a miracle happens and Wadley stays healthy all season then obviously an A)

WR = C (possible D if the wrong Smith is the starter)

TE = B++

OL = B+++ (get at least one Paulsen into the starting line-up and I'll upgrade this to an A)

DL = A

LB = B

DB = B

Kicker = A

Punter = ????? not as good as Coluzzi.

Returns = with Vandy? C . . . but there's enough talent on the bench for this to be a B.

Overall?? - Iowa has at least as much talent as last year. Since everyone says the coaching has improved over last year then that means more wins. Do I think we'll have more wins? Not sure at this point. Do I think several people will type the following: "I'll be happy with 7 wins as long as we show improvement in _______ area, and the kids give good effort." ?? Yep, since I've already seen those posts in 2017 from posters I used to respect.

Easy there on Brandon Smith as a starter day one. I really like the kid too, and think he could be something special, but J. Smith is still just a Jr, he has time to right the ship. He definitely has the physical attributes. If anything, such a claim is unfair to B. Smith by expecting him to start right off the bat.

Wow Josh, nice job. Don't know if we'll ever find another acrobatic punter though.

2 cautions. Don't underestimate Iowa's ability to squander QB talent. LB grades could be an effective C when they play fast high level teams which in the Big isn't that big of a deal.

This team will be sneaky good this year. Tougher schedule than last year, though. If the OL can protect Stanley and a deep threat at WR can step up, there will be a lot of happy Hawkeye fans this fall.

Don't worry about not knowing the punter's name....
I am not the only one... Thank you!

IMO Coluzzi turned out to be one of the best recruiting decisions KF has made. The somersault aside - his performance in the Michigan game last year was key to winning that game.

Punting is going to be a concern until I see otherwise.

Not a shabby breakdown. Plenty to be excited about overall. Schedule appears more difficult that the last 2 years, and beating out Wisky for the West will be a challenge given they do not have 3 of the better B1G teams on the schedule. That said, I think its fair to expect 8 wins or better next year, all things considered. If Stanley is the Man-ly and we stay healthy at the key positions, I could see Hawks playing for a shot at Indy come early Nov.

side note, I hope Toks can be the guy we need, didn't see enough of him last year to think he's at Daniels level, and I would have loved to see DMX play a big role on Offense this year....I was a fan based on what I had seen. Bummer to see him go.

Good stuff Josh. The schedule is certainly a challenge. Hopefully, the early games will be wins and bring some confidence and swagger to this team, especially at the QB position. And, yup...we need to be able to pass the ball.

Nice evaluation,QB is big ? as nobody has any quality time back there.We will have to wait and see how they do under pressure.Defensive Line also a big ? We lost two starters that plugged the wholes,not saying we won't be good just not much experience coming back.Hopefully the guys in waiting are chomping at the bit to prove themselves.

Okay I watched the Friday night game twice . . . on the B1G network

QB:
Work in progress.

WR:
As clim says, split Fant out to WR on occasion . . . .Or, My fellow Americans, I HAVE A DREAM, that someday we can have an offense with Easley/Vandeberg/Pekar/Wisnieski/Cook/Stanley as the offensive skill players. Haven't you always wondered what it would be like to watch football in the 1950s?

TE:
With Coons we are now NINE DEEP. Can you say logjam? I've already started to weep for Cook. Brian needs to find a way to use all that TE talent. Cook as H-back. Fant at WR. Pekar/Wisnieski in the two-TE formations. Rotate your TEs Brian. Experiment. Get creative.

FB:
5 of them. Some good ones here. Some years all they do is block. Let Kulick do more than that Brian. He can catch and who knows, maybe run on short yardage.

RB:
5 of them. Wait, same number of Running Backs as Fullbacks? Well 2 more will arrive shortly and that added depth may become crucial if the dark one, known by his acronym, raises his evil head.

O-line:
They will be the strength of the team. Games are won in the trenches. Finally, some good news.

Kicker:
Duncan MacLeod . . . there can only be one.

Punter:
Crossed-fingers.

D-line:
If they gel . . . can you say bullies of the big ten?

LB:
Strength of the defense.

Secondary:
They sure looked good against a crappy offense. Gervase is a hero in the making. Which means he'll be riding pine all season. JUST JOKING, lighten up.

Returners:
We'll be fine here.

So can I predict next fall?
Well the defense will carry the offense as it has done for 18 years.
People are saying not to expect much. I say there are two types of people. People who expect much of themselves . . . and people who don't. I assume Kirk's goal is always to assemble a group that expects a lot of themselves.

Well I'm going over my initial post. Here are some changes.

QB - Cook is out and Boyle is in. I like them both so it is a wash. I'm sticking with my original assessment. These guys are good. Peyton Manziel probably becomes Iowa's first two-time Heisman winner. But he won't start this year.

RB - whoa nelly!!!! JB on board, so that's like getting Daniels back. I think Toren Young supplants Toks if he hasn't already. Haven't even mentioned Kyshaun. He'll red-shirt.

WR - Quarrels baby! I like the 3 true freshmen. MVB needs to stay healthy. A little less worried than I was a few months ago. If Young can up his game so much the better.

TE - Fant - Hockensen - Pekar - Wisnieski - Wieting - yeah, we're loaded!

OL - Can you say two-time Joe Moore Award winners?

DL - Coaches are moving guys around to get Epipen on the field. He'll make someone's FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN team. People keep saying they are inexperienced. I hope our rivals are that silly. This unit is strong and will be better than last years. And yes, I'm aware last year's unit was very good.

LB - the best trio in the BIG TEN. Nuff said.

DB - like DL, people are worried about these guys. I'm not. Rugamba and Gervase will both be stars by mid-season. Miles Taylor has something to prove. If he comes thru then this unit will be the final piece in a puzzle titled: BULLIES OF THE BIG TEN.

Punter - not sure

Kicker - Duncan = Kaeding? No, but don't be sad because he does equal Houghtlin.

Returners - not sure, but someone will come thru.

Summation: I was bullish a few months ago and with the additions now I'm even more bullish. 9 wins 4 losses. If Brian is as good as Rob and Jon say, that includes a bowl win.
