NIU All American DE Sutton Smith talking tough vs. Iowa!

“It’s not like we’re going to go into Iowa thinking, ‘Man, I hope we can keep up with them.’ That’s not our mindset. We’re coming in there to punch them right in the face, just like we did at Nebraska.”

“I’m sure all Iowa knows what my tricks are, but they’re going to have to figure out what my new tricks are,”

“People are definitely going to look out for me. They’re going to game plan for me. That’s just fine,” the Northern Illinois star defensive end said. “You can try to double-team me. You can put a tight end on me. You can do a running back shift. I’m going to play fast. And me playing fast, I’m going to try to tire out whoever I’m playing up against, because I know I can play faster than them any given second.”

I don't hope for injuries, but I would laugh my ass off if this douche tore his achilles or blew an ACL on the second play from scrimmage just for how douchey he sounds. This sort of shit talking is fine if you're Brian Bosworth and playing for a contender chipring before you go play Nebraska, but it has no place in a NIU-Iowa game.

I have no problem with him running his mouth. That said he better be prepared to back it up on game day. That much talk tends to haunt a person if they can't back it up on game day.

He also said he is dissapointed that are two best tackles are out with suspensions. If you think this guy is cocky, you should have heard the Miami Hurricane players back in the 80's and 90's.

Sounds like a confident young man.

At 6’1” 240 I think I’d run at him, double-team him as much as possible from the very first snap for at least the first half.

Don’t let him get any condidence. Don’t allow him to fire his teammates up and give them confidence.

Smash and toss to TEs and then more smash please.

I've always said that I like cocky players. I like guys that go into games thinking they are physically better than the guy they are squaring off against and I see a lot of it as nothing more than trying to get in an opponents head and disrupt their focus on the game. Once the games over though, the scoreboard says all that needs to be said from that point on.

Yeah, but again the 'Canes could back it up as a team. When you've got Warren Sapp and Baltimorenthal on the same team, you can talk shit. That was their team identity. That is not NIU's team identity. They're in freaking DeKalb, Illinois.

LOL, they beat a TERRIBLE Nebraska team by 4 and needed a 4th quarter touchdown to do it. I'm not sleeping on this team but shut your mouth kid.

I like it, show some personality, have fun with sports. Nothing he said indicates a lack of sportsmanship. Just hoping the Hawks can make him eat his words.

Why can't I get this image out of my mind:

Macho Man - RIP.

Ok, this is just one game, but...

If our OTs are slow, he can get around them (looks like he has a tendency to try to move on the outside of OT), that being said, he does tend to over pursue. He does have some quickness, so if our OL gets confused, he could take advantage of it. Let me know if I'm wrong.

So, here's a question on practice philosophy. Scout team offenses run the opponent's scheme so the D can prepare accordingly.
Is Phil Parker creative enough to put a speed rusher (maybe a DB) on the edge to simulate what Smith does and prepare our offensive tackles mentally? Or is it "we just do what we do"...

Put me in the camp that likes this kid. He's a little cocky and brash, but not over the top. I wish he played for us.

Plus, for those that say the program doesn't have the requisite history for talking trash, keep in mind that NIU is 4-1 versus the B1G in the last 5 seasons, including beating us in '13.

I don't want him to get injured but if he got pancaked or faked out of his jock on a play so it shows up on ESPN or Big Ten Network later on, I'd be pleased.

Watched about 10 snaps and he's not a bull rusher.. Like at all. Which as small as he is how could he really? He tries to get on one shoulder or the other of the blocker mostly his outside one and then use his quickness to slide around. I don't see how he can impact the running game much at all. He'll either get blocked backwards or run himself upfield out of the way. Unless Stanley holds the ball too long I think we'll be fine. This kid isn't JJ Watt or Jadavion Clowney… Not even close

Got no problem with it. He can jaw all he wants, and he'll probably get his plays Saturday, but I still don't think NIU has quite enough for Kinnick this year.

I mostly agree with that, but he does look to have decent strength for his size. I do expect us to run to his side (prob have a TE over there as well), unless their other DE is even smaller...
