Next Iowa Coach

Now I'm not saying he will be gone after this season but another late season collapse has me believing that Fran may not have what it takes. When the time comes, who are some up and coming young coaches we could bring in here?

He's an ok coach and he was an upgrade from Lickliter...that's about all you can say.

I have liked Ed Cooley at Providence. He can recruit, and has Dunn who was a good get. Ben Jacobson is maybe an answer? He is young and has gotten UNI to be alright. Archie Miller at Dayton is another name to watch although I doubt we could get him to come here.

Honestly though I don't think we fire fran after next year no matter what happens. His kid is coming, he has gotten a nationwide top prospect in Tyler Cook, and we have gotten better each year under him. Would people be reacting like this if the collapse was during the beginning of BIG play and the hot streak was now?

My biggest concern is no real PG coming in for a few years. Christian Williams isn't a PG and he will play that next season.

Somebody with ZERO ties to the state of Iowa, who will not be tempted to use it as an easy recruiting crutch like KF does.

actually Archie Miller would be sweet...and I like Jacobsen although I'm a little shy of that due to how Mac fared at ISU although that may have been a bit of Lickliter vs Stevens and ISU choose wrong.

No I wouldn't be reacting like this I would be thrilled...I think who you are in Feb and March says a lot about how good of a team you are.

I do wonder if Fran may take his show some where else if given the chance? I don't see Iowa getting rid of him with his son coming in (along with other national recruits), but if given the chance and something opens up in the next couple of years. Could be interesting.

Notre Dame is the only place I see him maybe leaving for but that isn't opening for the foreseeable future.

I don't think he pulls an Alford and walks away unless it's Notre Dame.

Honestly I'm not even sure if I would be sad if he left....I appreciate what he has done...but I'm really beginning to see he isn't going to do much else here.

He isn't getting fired anytime soon however. That extension kind of puts a fork in that.

He'll need 2 bad years of missing the NCAA's before he's fired.

his two kids are starring at Iowa City west and will be for 3 more years after this one, in which case they will then be at the University of Iowa.

Once Connor signs on the dotted line this fall, Fran is in it for the long haul unless forced out.

I'm not mad about that either. I care about Iowa basketball again. I care so much that I am completely ****** off about the last few weeks and my night is ruined and I'm going to struggle to get to sleep tonight. Lick never once did that. I won't forget what Fran has done for Iowa basketball.

We're not even close to searching for a new coach so this is a weird discussion. Also, asking like hell to get bumped if we figure something out and make a run in the tournament (which, technically, can happen.)

Fact is, building an elite program from nothing is so damn hard. I'm not saying we're going to get there but this could easily be part of the transition phase and honestly, it is, it isn't that bad. We've got more solid recruits coming in and it's possible that they'll be better mentally then we are now. If we play with the same talent and close games all of a sudden we're an elite program. We really aren't that far from it.

So you guys apparently want to start the revolving door of coaching a la Nebraska?

Yeah let's fire a coach who inherited a poop team from a coach who inherited a poop team from a coach who turned an average team into a poop team.

Yep. That'll work. Because good coaches would be knocking down the door to get in here.

to each their own but I don't see us heading anywhere...I think we have peaked under Fran. I thought this would be the year he pulled it together after seeing the first half of this season...but nope...another historic collapse. The moment was too big for him.

I want so damn bad to be like Wisconsin, or a program like that (because honestly, who really wants to be like ******* Wisconsin, we're ******* Iowa and so much cooler) where winning is just ingrained in the program. I want to be the program that's lauded for mental toughness. That would be cool so, um, lets find a way to do that.
