Next Iowa Coach

I don't buy the, "We're Iowa remember it could be a lot worse line" thats just a losing attitude.

We have that attitude because this IS who we are. If the athletic programs would do something to change that perception that attitude would change but reality is, this is who Iowa is.

If sad, sad state is 6/7 seed in the tournament at worst after making the tournament 2 years in a row (1 if you don't count play in games though we shouldn't really have been in the play in game but I digress) what is a program like, I don't know, Rutgers? Having said that, I rather be schooling you fools on why we're a number 1 seed after a frustrating win vs Minnesota instead of debating if we are in a ****** situation vs being in a not that ****** but not that awesome situation.

It's all how you slice it, fool.

6/7 and tourney 2 years in a row. Hmm. Okay.

We we also have had ridiculous meltdowns in 2 out of the last 3 years. This one bad enough that we have gone from the 4th ranked team in the country to probably unranked in the space of a month. I don't care what you say, that's a disaster.

Look, I get that you're one of those glass half full, "enjoy the ride" rubes who thinks the first half of the season was spectacular, so it makes up for the cow pie we have right now. I'm not going to change your opinion. But in basketball winning down the stretch of a long season is what counts, not being good in January. And regardless of their record that's something the Hawkeyes have proven they can't do. So to me, that's sad.

Finished tied for 3rd last year and we're in the top 10 for record number of weeks this year (or close top it). Then lost 4 out of 5 to drop (come monday) out of the top 25 all together and end up in 8th place in the conf. And we're in a sad sad state?

Everyone needs to step away from the ledge. It is in fact easier to win games when you have elite talent. I'd say jok and uthoff are the ONLY big ten starters on any top half of the conference team. So IZZO better have good teams. Give Fran some time putting a better product on the floor. Gatens was good. Marble good. White good. None were next level stars or no brainer all americans. Uthoff is good but his late results might keep him off. AA teams. ..1st team anyway. He is winning with a lesser brand of athlete. It's not accepting..or being complacent. Basketball IS about athleticism at some point. Let's see his better recruits and judge in 5 years. Fran is a keeper. Shame on you all for saying fire him. Duh!

That is a strawman
No. He's right. It's a loser's attitude. You don't need elite talent to play tough and win. A lot of teams do it every single year. Butler/Wichita st/Wisconsin etc. It CAN be done but only if you continue to strive for it. 100% of the people that are willing to settle for mediocrity end up getting just that. Amazing, no?

Now I'm not saying he will be gone after this season but another late season collapse has me believing that Fran may not have what it takes. When the time comes, who are some up and coming young coaches we could bring in here?

This season's not over yet. We can still do some things that would change our perception of Fran right away.

Better D and clock management would help improve the perception. The 2nd half was better, saw more "fire" for at least 15 minutes, anyway. But closing out games seems to be a continuing issue.

Fact is, building an elite program from nothing is so damn hard. I'm not saying we're going to get there but this could easily be part of the transition phase and honestly, it is, it isn't that bad. We've got more solid recruits coming in and it's possible that they'll be better mentally then we are now. If we play with the same talent and close games all of a sudden we're an elite program. We really aren't that far from it.

Not that what your saying isn't true but what is it based on besides the usual hawkeye wishful thinking? Who does more solid recruits refer to? Everything I have seen puts our recruiting classes near the bottom of the B1G. One of our freshmen on this year's team that was considered a good catch hardly played at all and the other (Moss) was redshirted in a year when we desparately needed a point guard that could step up and carry this team.

This is was suppose to be the season for Fran with a highly recruited 7'2" center playing his senior year and also a 3 to 4 star guard in his senior year. Then there is Uthoff who had announcers singing his praises just seven games ago as being a high draft pick. Then there is Joc who was once among the most sought after recruits in the country before his injury in high school. Some speculated that he may go pro at the end of this year. Sapp was a high scoring prolific scorer coming out of high school and considered one of Michigan's best.

The team we saw just seven games ago is what many would expect given the talent and experience on this team. So please forgive me when I roll my eyes when ever I hear anyone talking about the new recruits coming in. I can't remember which beer company it was that ran that familiar slogan (I think Old Milwaakee) that said "It don't get any better that this" and for the Iowa Hawkeye basketball program that may be true. They need to collectively as a team get their SHITe together.

Fran got beat by an interim basketball coach at Wisconsin this year....with arguably one of their weakest teams of late....and at home.....with the Big Ten title on the line. Think about that. Yes, you could say Wisco is playing well and you would be right. But, if not now, when? You could also say he was Bo's right hand man.

That speaks to some limitations.
And Fran was badly out coached btw.

I'm not saying fire Fran, but he needs to either listen to his assistant coaches more or hire someone how can figure out how not to collapse late in the year or in the last 4 minutes of close games.

You either can recruit in basketball, or you can't. Fran hasn't shown much of the way of an elite recruiter. He's gotten some good under the radar guys, and we have been much better than the Lick years. But we seem to be around the same as Alford. Show promise, **** it down our leg at end of the year (though Alford seemed to do well in the Big10 Tourney)

Fran needs to evaluate his staff, especially recruiting. Yes, we got Cook.....but we have NOTHING for PG. As we've seen for the past few years, not having that playmaker at PG is killing us late in games.

Having read all previous posts, I can say that, while I appreciate what Fran has done, there was a reason I originally wanted Kirk Speraw when Alford (mercifully) left. At UCF, Speraw didn't have the best talent or teams, but in his good years, his teams were toughest at the end of the year. He pretty much played in a scenario where "at-large" wasn't an option. His teams HAD to win conference tournaments to get in.

Ferrell drills a contested 3 and we miss 2 wide open ones. Fran sucks.
We average around 1 field goal the final 4 minutes of these recent losses. Should that be on Fran? Maybe call a timeout, maybe try something different? Can't complain about the shots at the end of the game last night, but the 4 minutes leading up to that? Yeah I'm going to go ahead and give Fran some of the blame based on recent trends.

Yeah, we're all disappointed (once again) in the current slide. But the derp in this thread is deeper than the manure in Moo U's animal husbandry feedlots. Fran's not going anywhere any time time, and no Iowa fan should want him to.

I also think he has a bit of job security. Two, in fact.

I like Fran McCaffery from Iowa.

He brings energy and an edge which we haven't seen at Iowa. He recruits pretty well and has a style that Iowa fans can connect with. His teams make the NCAA tournament.

They real question is, would he put up with the schizophrenic on the ledge off the ledge fair weather fan-base?

Stop with the "we collapse every year" nonsense. I expect that crap from the national media and fans of other teams, but not here. We won out last six regular-season games last year.

IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS EVERY YEAR! STOP IT!

I didn't read a single post in this thread since the title is clearly addressing a situation that is at least 7 years away. Patrick won't graduate from Iowa until 2023...the same year Fran will turn 64. This conversation might make sense in March of 2022.
