New Offensive Assistant

If your going to go outside the Hawkeye family I don't think Iowa could have done much better as far as a fit goes. The guy is a winner it's all he's known the last few years. He knows how to close out games which is such a big thing (Ask Kyle Shanahan about that) As far as having 2 guys on the staff that have been play callers in their careers holding Brians hand should be huge. Hopefully it's a good thing and not a head butting thing. So the next question to me is recruiting. I'd say if your able to start and keep a dynasty going up in NDSU for that length of time then you are probably very well versed on how the recruiting world works. It'll be interesting to see what kind of a start Iowa gets off to with it. Last yr they were over half done before the summer was over. (if not for decommits they'd have been almost all done) I'm not so sure it'll be that way this year but we'll see.

One thing that has to improve is our pass blocking, hopefully it gets a lot better.
I agree here. Pass blocking needs work. New QB, new coaches.... it will be hard to be patient, and I'll need to keep reminding myself that all season. This will take a while to get things rolling. I hope we can all remember that.

Now, if we could just get somebody on the defensive staff to remind 3 or 4 of our starters that "tackling" is neccessary to stop the other team.:)

I am really excited for our offensive players. They have to be so jacked right now. I know they never publicly complained about the offensive schemes, but it had to be on their mind. This is just fantastic.
Way to go Iowa.

I have a friend who's a huge NDSU fan and knows Polasek. He said Polasek is a real charismatic guy and a great recruiter. However he also said that him and his dad aren't sad to see him go and that as the OC he cost them a few wins during the Wentz era. Whatever that means.

the NDSU forums seem to hate that he's leaving, so thats a good thing

No shit, and here I thought our fan base had too high expectations at times!! Whew.

Hopefully these new coaches don't try to put square pegs in round holes. The pass blocking wasn't bad. The schemes were

Yep. I think this new offensive staff is gonna just accentuate how tired, worn out and stale the GD offense was. You don't have to go 5 wide spread to attack on offense, you can attack on offense in many different ways.

The more I think about it, the more pissed off I am that this move didn't' happen last Jan. after the Rose Bowl. I was on here saying it should happen right then, and I got a lot of blow back for that......but looking back it would have been the correct move to let GD go then and start moving forward with KF 3.0 phase then.

I am really excited about this hire. Seems to embody everything we try to push on our football players. The idea of possibly having some schemes where there is pulling of the guards and spreading out the defense is music to my ears. Especially when I think of the tailback in the backfield who actually has the ability to make people miss. This really could be a perfect setup for Akrum.

At least in the surface, these hires look good. Hard to now how the chemistry will work. Time will tell.

To get KOK as a QB coach with his experience and TP as the OL coach with his experience is pretty solid. Throw in Copeland, who has been recruiting Chicago and the Midwest, and these are potentially three really good hires.

Rob, would it be a stretch to think that maybe Brian has been able to assert a little more influence on the old man and the direction of the program? These hires look like a nice refresh.

Good thing that kind of blame-game doesn't happen around here.

I do. When I wrote that BF was the best choice for OC, a main reason was his ability to reach his father. I'm not sure anybody from the outside could do that and certainly not any better.

There's a middle ground there somewhere. Pass blocking still comes down to one man being able to keep the other in front of him. Now on plays where the Dline is stunting and blitzing and there's a mix up and guys are coming in untouched then yeah that's for sure a scheme/coaching issue or player missing an assignment. But if a DE is coming off the edge and just gets around the tackle or pushes him into the QB that's just getting physically beat. Both of those types of things happened all year long. I don't know which was more prevalent than the other but safe to say improvement for all of the above is needed.

Is the program simply replacing departing coaches? Or increasing the size of the staff? If it's the latter, why wait 18 years to pull the trigger on that?

I believe replacing those who left. This is the first year that schools can increase their staff by 1 if I'm not mistaken, so it may be a combination of both.

Sincere query: What changes do you expect to see from the head coach as a result of the changes over the last couple months?
