New Offensive Assistant

I believe replacing those who left. This is the first year that schools can increase their staff by 1 if I'm not mistaken, so it may be a combination of both.

Okay, it appears then the staff is increasing in size according to rule changes. And from what I gather it is a 100% consensus that all the new coaches and returning players are superior to the old coaches/players. That would put the floor for 2017 at 9 wins. That will be enjoyable.

I really like this hire. I wasn't overly thrilled with the KOK reunion but I understood it. He has done good work with QBs. I like it much more now that some blood outside the circle has been hired. And now BF has 2 guys under him that have playcalling experience that he can bounce ideas off of. Seems like a solid teacher and a great recruiter. Iowa needed some youth and go getters in recruiting and I think Polasek/Copeland could provide that. Copeland would be a guy that you could send to FL and hopefully start making a bigger push down there. We have done ok there recently but maybe this makes a bigger push. I mean in Dade County you can trip over a crack in the sidewalk and bump into a kid that has 4* talent.

Another way to look at these hires is both were at NIU when Iowa lost. Then Polasek was at the helm of the offense that torched Iowa last year. What they would both bring to the table is for KF/BF to say...."What did you guys see in our schemes that we can change/disguise to make it better?"

Hopefully they will take that approach anyway.

Can't add a 10th coach until April when NCAA approves it (nation wide). It is the other "Support" staff that Kirk talks about that Alabama has that other schools cannot possible have.

Kirk broke the circle of trust with his hires thus far................ but kinda like ordering French Vanilla ice cream instead of plain Vanilla.

You can definitely see the fit angle with these hires. Don't see a lot of potential disruption as we will likely be tuning our current offense vs. what Davis was trying to accomplish (w/o Texas talent) when coming to Iowa. You can also see the youth factor put into play for recruiting purposes as well as the potential to build a future staff for the B. Ferentz era if the program proves successful going forward.

Change always brings hope and hope for Hawk fans is often our middle name.

I really thought we had a shot at Paul Rhoads. I know, it was probably unrealistic, but a man has to dream big. He had a way of making 3 wins feel like 12...you just can't coach that. Ask any ISU fan, they will tell you, getting that 3rd win was always huge and it set the stage for the "wait till next year" comments. ISU is just like the old Cubs organization, minus the lovable part.

Pretty tough schedule next year, I'd feel real good if we could go 9-3 with that schedule. Gotta hope we go 3-0 vs (Wyoming, ISU, and N. Texas). I could see losses to PSU, OSU and Wisconsin. If you can win @MSU and @ Nebby and @jNW those would be solid wins.

I like Polasek. I like his resume. I like his demeanor. I like his upward path. I think he will flourish coaching and O-line that is already by the very definition stout. As for Copeland well his body of work isn't as impressive to me, but he has conveniently done alot of winning along his stops. He may very well be a rising star it's just not as obvious to me as it is with Polasek. I will just trust the staffs process and judgement on Copeland and hope for the best.

As for wins. I do expect us to compete with everyone except for OSU and PSU. Every other opponent on our schedule is beatable. 8-4 is acceptable, 9-3 is desirable, 10-2 is achievable but probably expecting to many lucky breaks. 11-1 or 12-0 are pipe dream finishes. Good news is I think we could easily win the west and head back to Indy. Only time will tell, but I do have cause for some optimism.

I like the hire, also and I have a level of comfort that Ken O'Keefe will be on the staff to help Polasek settle in to his first job as Offensive Line Coach at a Division I school. He has coached some very good athletes at NDSU and NIU. It appears that Copeland has had success at every stop as well so I am excited to see what they will do with the Iowa offensive schemes. I hope the 10th coach which can be hired this spring has Iowa roots to round out the staff. (Binns, Bell.....)

I think when you add in the fact that there will be a new offensive system in place, we may struggle a little. Although it can't possibly be worse than the Greg Davis system, even if the players are still perfecting it.
