New coach?

Gillispie's drinking problem is bad enough that he checked himself into rehab. I'm not certain if this was just to satisfy pretrial issues or whether he was taking it seriously as we see many celebs check themselves into rehabs once they get busted with dope / alcohol, etc. prior to their court dates to gain favor from the prosecutor / judge / jury.

His court date for his DUI is supposed to start next week in KY. This is the 3rd time that he has been arrested for alcohol-related driving charges according to one website.

On the bright side, Jim Rome hates the guy so he should fit in to our program very well.

Gillespie intrigues me based on the job he did at Texas A&M, but what is the story behind his supposed drinking issues? Was it just an isolated issue, or is it something more than that?

No Gillespie, if people thought Alford was arrogant, just wait until Billy gets here. He has quite the reputation for being a drunk and an a--hole, he did a good job at A&M but he had one foot out the door the whole time he was there.

JHHawk, I promise I am not picking on you, but your list is comical.

Gillespie, would never happen with all of his personal issues, just don't fit the Iowa protocol. On top of it, he is arrogant beyond Alford standards.

Brian Gregory, has a good thing going at Iowa, why would he even consider it, the only place I would ever see him go in the B10 would be back to MSU if Izzo decided to stop coaching.

Mike Montgomery is a west coast guy. Spent his whole life out there, you think that he would really want to come live in Iowa after coaching for Stanford, California and Golden State Warriors?

Craig Robinson, what in the world is the infatuation with this guy? You must be drinking the Obama kool-aid if you think that he is a good coach and recruiter. They are 9-12 overall and 3-6 in the PATHETIC Pac-10 that will probably only get their automatic to the NCAA tournament.

I would like to see someone with Hawkeye connections take over. I think too many people think you have to have someone who has been a head coach before. I would like a young energetic coach to come in even if it was someone who only has assistant experience or just playing experience (at a major level). Just cause you succeed at one spot doesn't mean you will at another.

People will rip me for this but guys like Settles, Horner, Oliver. These guys were good students and athletes that would put everything they have into the job to make Hawkeye fans proud and fans would get behind them. I think Horner just finished his playing career and is just starting his coaching career, who knows. I think a guy like this would do the job for half of what they pay TL and they can structure a contract for this type of coach with a shorter length and stipulations as how we have to perform before that coach gets the same type of deal TL has now.

Wishful thinking though, because TL will be around next year.

Brian Gregory is at Dayton. Does he make over a million a year? I doubt it. He has moved around plenty in his career, and is from the North Suburbs,so it would be closer to home.

Mark Montgomery, assist at MSU, is a great recruiter, and has been an assist under Izzo for a number of years ,and is the Assistant Head Coach there.

Gillespie is a long shot, I give you that. But he is as turnaround specialist, and Iowas bb program needs that.

Craig Robinson might get the DePaul job, which Lavin also has expressed interest in. This is Robinson 2nd year at the moribund Oregon St program...took them from an 0-19 Pac ten record the year before to 8 wins his first year and won that postseason tourny. Has a very strong recruiting class coming in next year...after only two years. Getting top talent from Chicago,Ca.,Az,and Maine to come to Corvallis,Oregon cannot be that easy. If you think he could not get in on most Chicago talent if he was at Iowa, you are nuts. He might not get them all, but he went to Mount Carmel, and his sister went to Whitney Young and between the catholic league and public league, he would be a force.

What is the biggest challenge to winning at Iowa? Getting top out of state talent to come to Iowa City. Hiring lick was a surrender to that challenge...we need someone that can overcome that challenge.

The more I read about Forbes the more I am intrigued by him. I think he would do well.

My guy is still Mike Dunlap....but I doubt we'd ever get him.

Moot point though....Lick will be here at least 1....probably 2 more years.

Do you think it would be too much to ask Kirk Ferentz to coach the team? Maybe have Norm coach the D. Nobody else. No assistants. Just Kirk & Norm.

And some state this is a football school!!

Just curious, what does anyone think of Steve Lavin????

It's been what, five or six years since he last coached. He brought in a lot of talent to UCLA, which I know isn't the hardest place to recruit to, but his teams seemed to go through a long slump each year, before making the sweet 16 almost every year.

A year and a half ago many of the same humanoids calling for Lickliters head were calling for Ferentz's head but nobody will stand up and admit they were. Every program, especially Basketball programs in states like Iowa that rarely have D1 quality B-ball talent coming out of it, go through tough years. Our football program during the Ferentz era, which almost all of us would say might be the greatest stretch of football the program has ever seen, went through bad times as well. Continuity is what gets a program like Iowa's football and basketball programs to a level where they can consistently reach BCS games in football and the tourney in basketball. Lick's junior class all left because of mothers dying, dads dying, bad advice, homesickness, whatever. His Soph, fresh and incoming classes have been good. We don't need a new coach, we need patience, just like happened with the football team, that patience will be rewarded. Imagine how stupid of a choice it would have been if Barta would have done what so many on these types of message boards asked for and axed Ferentz.

Lavin is rumored to be a possible candidate for the Depaul job. According to CSN.

I was surprised to hear that...but maybe it does make some sense. Lavin was an asst at Purdue for a few years, so he knows Chicago.
He is a big city guy...so maybe Chicago works for him.
He is a slick recruiter, so maybe he feels DePaul is a sleeping giant.
DePaul is in the Big East...good bb conference, but too good for DePaul.

Now, there is some wishful thinking that DePaul could get out of the All State Arena contract and play at the United Center instead, which might help make it a bit more attractive to Lavin. Closer to campus, close to the loop for office workers who want to catch some hoops, closer to neighborhoods that he can get players from..so their families and friends could attend...still, big arena that seats almost 23k...might be real empty for DePaul games.

I for one was not calling for Ferentz's head but was calling for O'Keefe to be replaced with a capable OC. This previous year still hasn't changed my opinion of him as our OC as our offense was still putrid.

What about Fran Dunphy at Temple? He has brought that program back after Cheney retired. He was very successful at The University of Pennsylvania and LaSalle. He might be a bit old, but it is a thought.
