New coach?

I can not believe some of the names people bring up as a replacement for Lick. Some of the names people come up with are not any better than Lick. If we are not going to get a high quality coach I say give Lick another year. Some people say anyone is better than Lick. If we hire just anyone because we want to get rid of Lick and he is no good we are looking at long time of bad BB.

I agree. If we want to bring back the glory of the 80's we will need to payout for a big time coach who kids are attracted too.We need practice facilities. College basketball and recruiting are much different than they were was 20+ years ago.

Such as?

I'm a big proponent of Steve Forbes who is the head assistant at Tennessee. I've done my research, and I think this guy would be a very good canidate for the job. If not him, then Montgomery or Stephens from MSU, but Forbes would be my #1 prospect.

Who exactly is the big-time coach...

that will be thrilled to go to Iowa to coach? Seriously, if you are currently a successful coach at a school in a BCS conference, you aren't leaving that job for Iowa. You just aren't.

We don't need a "big-name" coach to win. We just need the right one. Lute Olson was at Long Beach State before he came to Iowa. Bo Ryan was at UW Platteville for 15 years and UW-Milwaukee for 2 before going to UW-Madison.

I hope Lickliter is the guy. It's looking like he isn't, but he'll probably get another year to determine that. If there is a new guy a year from now, that guy has to be able to recruit and has to be able to retain players.

Agree with Forbes. If you don't think a local guy will stir up attendence at games you're crazy. Small town Iowa loves to see a guy from their area succeed. Also, he is connected with Pearl at Tennessee and would probably be a solid recruiter.

I'm a big fan of Billie Gillispie and he is a big name coach with big time credentials.

I am going to presume that Bruce Pearl would tell him better to keep his azz out of Iowa City! Another one we won't be able to get.

seriously????

seriously what?

BCG has resurrected two programs (UTEP and Texas A*M). And when I say resurrected, I'm talking about taking programs that absolutely sucked worse than Iowa does right now and built them in to NCAA tournament teams within 2 years.

He went to Kentucky as a headline coach and he ruffled quite a few feathers (big donors) and he was fired. Before he was fired he recruited and signed three 5 star recruits (Patterson, Orton and Ferguson) and five 4 star recruits (Legion, Liggins, Miller, Galloway and Hood). In the two previous seasons Tubby was only able to recruit three 4 stars or lower. You do realize that Tubby Smith was fired from Kentucky, right?

The Kentucky administration readily admits the BCG wasn't fired for the performance of the team but rather what they called "incompatibility" between he and the school.

We aren't Kentucky, winning will fix most problems.

He is the name I have been holding on to for a couple of years.

His style, and mentality, would fit at Iowa.

Billy was in over his head at UK.

I have a friend who is very high in the Ath Dept in Lexington who said they feel Billy would definitely be the 'right kind of guy' in Iowa City.

But, remember that other name:

Keno.

I think Keno Davis would be one of the worst hires that Iowa could make right now. I mean no offense to the guy because he can probably learn how to coach but he has only been coaching for 3 years including this year. He took his dads team and made the NCAA tournament but lost in the first round as a 5 seed.

He parlayed that win and his National Coach of the Year (see where that has gotten us) and landed a pretty decent paying job in Providence. He hasn't set the world on fire in Providence mind you. His team finished in 7th place last year and is currently sitting at 4-6 in conference and in 11th place.

Hiring Keno Davis would be simply compounding the problem that we currently have.

I don't understand why people even have this discussion.

Unless Lick gets hit by a bus he's going to be the coach next year.

If three years for Lickliter isn't enough time, then one shouldn't judge Keno too harshly based on two years. That said, the jury is very much out on what Keno will accomplish in a major conference. And you're right, he is still pretty young and inexperienced as a head coach, and has yet to truly prove himself. He may or may not win big, and I agree that I think we'd be making a risky hire to bring him in. It could pay off, but on the other hand, if it doesn't..

I would look into WSU coach or Mo States coach. Both these guys styles are exact opposites of coach Licks. These guys recruit athletes and their up-tempo coaches! They like to run the floor and their recruiting ties are St Louis, Kansas City, and southern US. If you get a chance watch those two coaches, their teams are both very very young and putting up good numbers. WSU is 17-4 with a non-conf win over Texas Tech. WSU coach is very aggressive on the defensive side of the ball as well. Those are just two guys to keep an eye on. I don't think any assistant at a BCS school would come to Iowa, its a step in the wrong direction for them.

My list:

Gillespie
Brian Gregory
Montgomery
Craig Robinson

Forbes? I do not know much about him...but he is interesting.

Of course, this is just idle speculation....Lick will get another year.

Gillespie intrigues me based on the job he did at Texas A&M, but what is the story behind his supposed drinking issues? Was it just an isolated issue, or is it something more than that?

Keno would be a disaster his teams play no defense.
Steve Masiello--NYer-who's still Pitino's right hand man--he's ready. Played for Rick at UK. Former ballboy at the Garden for the Knicks when Rick was there. GREAT RECRUITER--will go after city kids, not kids from Winfield-Mt. Union, Martensdale-St Marys, or Farragut. He would be a great hire...

Loess,
When I brought up the name of Masiello to you a few weeks back on the other site, I remember that you liked it and you were going to check with your friends at Louisville. What information did you get out of them? I really think this could be the kind of guy this program needs.

My buddy says HE IS READY...GREAT RECRUITER...a hungry proven assistant will try to succeed and he will...if given a chance. My buddy loves him...
