Need for next year

After watching the game tonight and the quality minutes Marble gave at point...I really think both open scholarships need to go to big guys. I was very impressed how Marble handled the team. With Payne, Cartwright and Marble at PG for next year we will finally have a good distribution of options. Prior to this game I wasn't comfortable with only Payne and Cartwright but Marble really impressed me and can easily give 10 minutes of quality PG play a game next year.

Obviously the center position is killing us...dumb fouls, lack of finishing, little rebounding. Ideally you pick up a 6'8" JUCO player that can compete at center next year and bring in a freshman center who can compete for spot minutes and develop (Katenda). I really think if this happens we could have a very competitive team (middle of the Big Ten). With the way May, Marble, Cartwright, McCabe and Basabe played tonight we have some real potential. Gatens and Payne need to step up their games but even if they don't we have a pretty solid core.

We really need bigs. I don't even care what there skill-set is as long as they can play. We could use a pick-n-pop big. We could use an athletic big that can run, rebound, and play strong around the rim. We could use a brawny big with a solid post-game. Hell we could use a big that just anchors the defense and rebounds. We really need bigs.

To be honest, I don't think Tyler Harris fills a need.

We need guys that can play in the post or guys that can fill that scoring guard role. Tyler Harris is another 3 man, of which we have plenty. I think he will be good, but we have much bigger needs imo. I still haven't decided whether I think we need 2 posts or 1 post and another quick guard that can get to the hole. Maybe you take what you can get. If 2 good posts want to come, take them both, if a good scoring pg wants to jump on board first, take him and leave 1 open for a post.

Need a ball handler still, but as far as a big man goes need to make sure he's athletic. To heck with the old style traveling Iowa big man. I will take another Basabe type any day.

I think Marble could be OK at the point some day, but I do not think it is his natural position and it shows a bit. On at least three occassions in the first half he missed wide open teammates in transition at or near the hoop which would have resulted in easy buckets. He needs to keep his eyes up.

This. Marble played better than I expected but he won't be great. I think we need one guard and one big. The thought of Brommer starting at center next year is ugly. Hopefully we get Woodbury in a couple years though.

In order for coach's offense to really excel to its fullest, we need a great point guard that is an absolute star player. Someone who can shoot the three, slash to the basket, control the tempo, and have an outstanding knowledge of the game. Unfortunately players like this are very hard to come by, but if Iowa is to become a legit big ten title contender, coach needs to get a player with this ability. Cully is solid at controlling tempo and can find open guys, but is shaky with his driving and shooting. Cartwright has shown that he can be a slasher, but has not been great setting people up and is a liability when he shoots outside. Neither of these guys are the answer right now, and neither is Marble either. I'm really hoping within the next two years coach gets one of these all big-ten type point guards I'm dreaming of.

........oh, and we need bigs. I don't think I even have to start on that issue.

I think Iowa needs more roster turnover myself. Too many schollies going to juniors that are not major conference talents. Marble, McCabe, Basabe, and May are good starting pieces, but these four guys really play 2 positions. You need 2 post players. You need a PG for the future. You could also use a good slasher-type player who could D-up scorers.

My point in the original thread was about scholarship distribution (a major problem with Lick). Ideally if you have 13 scholarships you have at least 2 true point guards and one guy who is a combo that if one of the two PGs is hurt, can fill in. I think with Payne, Cartwright and Marble (after last night) we have that. I am not saying that the PG can't be upgraded in the future but realistically speaking we probably won't find somebody in the spring to do that. I think the 2012 class is big for PG since there will be a big need with Cartwright graduating.

I do think we can upgrade our center position for 2011 with a couple of spring players. Thus the point of my post. We could be a competitive team (playing for the NIT) with a decent post player. A JUCO big and a center would really make us competitive.

I do agree it is a shame that Archie and Brommer are in the same class (same size, both limited offensive game). I mean Brommer is shooting 40% on the year taking no shots outside of 5 feet. I don't think coach will kick either off the team because both are contributing and seem to be good teammates but it would be nice to have one more scholarship to give.

PG and a C. We are in the same boat next year unless Fran can sign a couple of studs in the spring.
True, esp if there are any lingering issues with Cully.

He's had back issues for several years and they just don't "go away". He can likely play through a lot of the issues, but they will always be there.

Iowa needs a PG and a tall PF or C. A 6'9"+ guy would help.
Woodbury would be a start, but he's a few years away from being any sort of impact player.

McCabe plays PF, Gatens plays SG. May and Marble play the SF spot. They are athletic enough. Iowa has enough 6'5" - 6'7" guys that can play the 3 spot.

The needs are at point and the 5 spot. Cole done this year, Brommer and Archie the next. That leaves basically an empty nest at the 5. C is a need. Cartwright gone after next, hopefully Cully stays healthy, then its just Marble who isn't a true PG. PG is a need.

May plays SF-I would call him pretty athletic. They could use somebody who can create their own shot more in the halfcourt offense but getting open looks hasn't been the problem with this system. It is finding the players to hit open shots, a post to finish around the basket and limit turnovers.

Spank you do make a good point about Payne-if his health issues are such that he is limited in the future then we would have to give one of the two open scholarships in the spring to a PG and one to a big. I was assuming that Payne would come back 100% which is probably not the case.

With the flashes Marble showed last night, I now think C is a bigger need for us next year than PG. We desperately need a 6'9" guy that can score on the block. The lack of an inside scoring threat is what has caused our offense to stagnate at times this year. Basabe is a good piece, but his game really isn't post-scorer. I think we saw flashes of where his most value lies in our comeback attempt in the 2nd half last night. He can shoot the rock and be a scorer from 12-15 ft. We need to get him more of those shots.

All that said, if a game-changing PG is available, we have to take him. This system is VERY PG-centric like TrustKF said. It's one of the reasons I'm holding out hope that Paige realizes this and decides to come to Iowa. I know the coaches have been on him since they came to campus.
