Need for next year

Every team in the nation is looking for PGs and Cs. They are the most important positions and have the fewest players with the skills/natural attributes (height) to succeed.

Iowa's been looking for a PG and C since Horner/Brunner graduated (remember, Kelly didn't start out as PG, though he was very good there).

Hopefully Caf can find people for these positions. I think the "style" of ball Caf plays will make it easier to recruit good players at these positions relative to Lick. Go get 'em Fran... (don't turn down a good Juco, either--the program needs maturity at these positions, ASAP).

Hey, look who it is! Hi LG. Happy Holidays. :)

I keep thinking that another Reggie Evans, plus Katenda would be nice additions to this team next spring. I think we are ok at pg(if cully gets healthy) the next two years and want to save a slot for a 2012 pg(hopefully Paige, but if not him, there are other targets) to replace Bryce.

Fran needs to try to make a real move up the Big Ten standings next year, with one of the strongest upperclasses in decades departing the league. He has to recruit accordingly, which means bigs....a developmental frosh and a strong juco. If not possible then look at Tyler Brown...we still need more shooters.

Center is clearly the biggest need but then I still wouldn't be opposed to another PG or best available (Katenda)

Honestly I can't imagine a better scenario for a JUCO C. You'd get to start for 2 years, we feed the post constantly, great style of play, Bowen's on staff with 11 years as an NBA forward, and we'll be a competitive B10 team

No one has brought up Cougill in this thread yet. If we need a JUCO center, he'll certainly be available. I know some think we can do better, but he's also probably better than who we have right now. He showed flashes last year as a good shooter and passer. Wasn't he top 150 or so in high school? Maybe this coaching staff could turn him around.

That is because we don't want Iowa to suck. Cougs is serviceable at best. We are talking about getting a Reggie Evans type, not a lazy kid that has never worked hard enough to stay in shape or academically eligible?

Also, somebody said Archie and Brommer are gone next year, which leaves a giant hole? Um, isn't that what there is now? I say you keep one of these guys on schollie, you tell the other they are coming off, but can stay as a walk-on if you would like. Then you go out and build a real front line.

Obviously everyone would prefer for Iowa to get a Reggie Evans over Cougill. I won't debate you on that point. But how often do you get Reggie Evans type from juco? More often you end up with Cyrus Tate or a Kurt Looby.

I think Coach will take the best juco big available, I'm just wondering if it might end up Cougill. He doesn't really seem like a player that would fit great in the system so hopefully we can find someone better but its not a certainty.

Also, I disagree with you about kicking Brommer off the team. He hasn't done anything to deserve that and he tries hard in games. He just can't finish at the basket due to being a very mediocre athlete trapped in a large body. I think letting Archie go would be justifiable in that we red shirted him for a year. We made a two year commitment to him and he should have his degree after this year. We don't owe him another year, but Brommer we do.

Is there even a need to kick one of the bigs off? We have 2 scholarships free, right? We're probably not going to need more than that. And if we keep Brommer and Archie there scholarship will still be open for the 2012 class. It never hurts to keep depth in that position. Plus, don't we want more scholarships open for 2012 which is a blockbuster class?

The need for next year is simply big guys that can make a layup. The thing about Katenda is he was rated as a Top 150 player before he got sick and couldn't do much this summer. Aaron White is a player that can score from the 3 or 4 position and if Iowa can land Katenda that would be a great combo with Basabe. The one thing I would like to see is a Center prospect that is just athletic that rebounds and blocks shots. Iowa will have plenty of scorers, it already shows now when they don't get much offense out of that position. Cartwright is a 2-guard trapped in a PG body, but he is getting better. I don't cringe any longer when he has the ball as I wait for him to turn the ball over. However, the dribble off you foot by the baseline at WF just amazed me. I give Cartwright a pass because he is your typical JC player, raw, but he has tons of ability to do the things Iowa needs right now. Payne is a very good PG, but he didn't look right all season and now we know why, don't give up on him yet folks. I can only imagine how frustrated he is. My need for next year is a couple more bigs, with Katenda being the main target and I am interested how much Iowa improves from year one to year two. They have already improved from game one to now. I think the biggest need for next year is to not get blown out of games in the Big Ten, that will not help Iowa move forward in recruiting. Iowa does still look to be in better shape than Indiana and PSU, which is very encouraging.
