Nebraska Week

Ever since my son and I were in the stadium iirc in 2005 when the hawks totally manhandled jNW in Evanston for 57 minutes or so on a miserable weather day but then gave up 14 points in the last two minutes to lose 28-27 I have noticed how the Kirk conservatism comes back to bite him, and all hawk fans, in the ass. And that game might have been the week after the hawks gave up a late lead and lost to Mich at home to give up their home winning streak. My point is the hawks can never have a big enough lead for me.

That game in Evanston was just a microcosm of that year of close but not quite games. Late in the game Chandler or some other TE for Iowa caught a pass and was pushed backwards a couple of yards and pushed out of bounds. Now 99.99% of the time the ref will windmill his arms to keep the clock running but he didnt. This was right in front of the Iowa bench and the coaches and players were all over that ref. That single play saved jNW a crucial timeout or 40 seconds of clock time. That was just an example but mainly Iowa shot itself in the foot, ankle and leg many times then and since then. But that is what makes Iowa an 8-4 team on average vs 9-3 or 10-2 more often than not.

That was not the main reason Iowa lost as it was just a team that squandered scoring opportuinites all year, like in their bowl game loss to Texas iirc, and also there were times the Iowa defense just couldnt get a stop, like late in the 2009 regular season.

2005 broke me. That Michigan game and then Northwestern. I was at both games. My recollection of Northwestern was that Shada had a pick with roughly 5:30 left to play with the Hox up 13. Cats fans were leaving and Iowa fans were wishing them better luck next year. We went turtle shell on offense, Schlicher missed a FG, NU walked down behind Basanez's golden arm then got the onside. Ugh.

Oh I disagree and say Lovie and his players wanted to walk into Lincoln and make a statement. Illinois was 1-3 and manhandled Nebby and if the hawks play there game, a good game they win by about 2 TDs or more.

Two years ago Kirk made a bonehead decision to go for a short fake FG when I think he was already ahead by 15. Kirk could have had a 3 score lead and then to top it off the opponent Nebby fake punt gave them total life to score 15 straight points.

That game was over almost certainly if KIRK doesnt go all crazy and out of character on that fake FG.

I only feel pretty relaxed when Kirk has a 4 score lead with under 10 minutes to go ;)
hawk82, your are 100% correct abut the snafu back in 18. A field goal at that time would have been as good as a touchdown. That play happened directly in front of me and it has to rank as one of BF & KF's all time bone head calls. Huskers were completely dominated up to that moment. Momentum shift came from the botched fake field goal attempt and the 4th down play by Huskers. As I recall both of those plays took place inside Nebby's own 5 yard line. Hawks wound up in a dog fight when they should have cruised on to a 7 or 10 point victory.

I didn't think we needed yet another OM thread so I'll just place this here. It figures he's working his way up the depth chart just in time to play Iowa.

"Lubick said receiver Oliver Martin had worked his way into Nebraska’s receiver rotation with his consistent play in practice, and now that the NCAA had cleared him, Martin would continue to have a bigger role in the offense."

At least they finally acknowledge Iowa is a rivalry game.

Covid won't be an issue this week. Unlike Wiscy we have our top 2 QBs and are not scared of Nebby.
It will be for Bucky. Their game with Minnesota is cancelled due to more positives on the Gopher team. This ends all conference championship talk for Wisconsin.

Screw Nebraska. After reading that "rivalry" article, it makes me even more hopeful that we dominate the living hell out of those punks. How many Farniok's are there?

And then Basanez called us a dirty team in the post game presser. Said that "evidently that's how they teach football down there."

There was a killer roughing the passer penalty on Chad Greenway that put Northwestern in position on that last drive. Shouldn't have been called; when a QB dives headfirst he's fair game. Then Basanez had the nerve to say that.

I suppose Dan Persa's Achilles injury a few years later was dirty as well. The turf monster caused that one.

Just saw that...Now if they can just play spoiler and knockoff NW. We can hope for that and a few upsets along the way to bring them back to the pack.
