ND - Positives

Yeah, Jok was flat out bad last night - which is another clear positive - Iowa hung with a potential sweet 16 team on their court for 3 Quarters with their best player playing about as poorly as he can. The talent on this team is going to be bouncing off the court over the next few seasons.

Jok shot so bad last night and is still shooting over 40% from 3 this year. His start this year up until last night had just been ridiculous

We played without Cook and Peter had an off night. ND shoots 30 of 33 from the line. I think last night gave Pemsl a great chance for growth and Jordy improved in a hostile environment. I think this team has a lot of improvement in them this year and its pretty entertaining basketball compared to watching the paint dry Lickball. I hate slow down basketball. Run Fran, run!

I don't mind it either, but in year 7 no way should any coach be in position where he recruited so bad he now has to depend on 4 frosh to start..

That's a pretty negative way to look at it. Are you saying he recruited bad by having unbalanced classes? Because we only have one upperclassmen on the team who isn't starting and I don't think it is a big deal for a freshman to start over a sophomore. Which other than Uhl, that is all it is. Freshman over sophomores.

Our defense looked much better to start the game and then faded in and out. Bohannon, Pemsl, and Moss were obvious positives. I expected a more lopsided game so that fact we kept it competitive was a positive. The only real negative I can think of (besides Jok being off) is Uhl hasn't shown any progression from last year or from game to game this year.

Look at his 2014 class that should be upperclassmen. Trey Dickerson, Ellingson and Uhl. One bust and two role players. Out of the 2015 class we had 6 scholarships and Moss is the only one that really contributed last night. That's not really a good thing

Pemsyl surprised me. Fran was recruiting a bit taller player that I know who is a bit more athletic. There were pretty similar players. The other guy played tougher competition in high school. I thought he went with the wrong guy. The other guy is in the Mo Valley now.

Jok being off and Cook out is probably related. ND probably mid to upper mid if in Big.

Pemsl is a friggin beast. He's got some great post moves for a freshman. He absolutely schooled "what's his nuts" from ND last night.
I loved it!

what's his nuts had 24 points and 17 rebounds but you're right, he couldn't guard Pemsl on the defensive end

I was thinking the 16 class was 15. Yes those 2 didn't pan out so well. The most recent classes are the ones that matter tho. A good one last year and what looks to be a good one this year. Weiscamp and P Mac might be really good.

Every recruiting class matters. We wouldn't be so inexperienced if we didn't whiff on two straight classes

That is correct. What I said is also correct. The newest classes matter most.

For what? This season is pretty much a throwaway season because of the 2014 and 2015 classes in my opinion. I don't think that's a good thing after year 7 in the program and coming off 3 straight NCAA tournaments. I wish we were building off that instead of completely reloading and wasting Jok's senior year

There has been a lot of talk on the board about who is going to transfer. If we have guys that are looking to leave, does that not indicate a fair amount of talent on the team as a whole? I suppose the counter argument is that we have a lot of average players. I think I will go with the former.

For judging a coach's future. Remember the newest classes are the ones you can say we're the product of 3 straight tournaments. Also I hate to break it to you, but we will more than likely have rebuilding years just like almost every other program. The question is, how far do we drop and how far will we rise. We will always do both to some extent. It's not like a coach gradually gets better every single year. Year 7 won't always be better than year 6 and year 15 won't always be better than year 14. I agree with the poster who said it's dumb to say this shouldn't happen in year 7. It might happen again in year 10 and year 16 and year 23. Those years will always happen.

Right now we have Cook, Jok and a bunch of average players. The question is will any of the younger guys develop into something more than average. I'm guessing some will and some won't and the ones that don't will leave

I don't know how people don't see a ton of positives. I know it's frustrating to lose, but like others have already said in this thread. They lose a huge piece to this team in Tyler Cook, Jok shoots horribly and just has an overall poor game and the team played competitively on the road against a quality squad. I saw young guys step up their game and show that they can at least attempt to play some defense. They didn't even look like they understood their defensive assignments in Florida. Last night they at least looked like they understood what their jobs were. Now it's just about getting better at executing consistently on defense, especially in the last 10 minutes where most young teams tend to fade. Their confidence seemed to be rising. I know they gave up a ton of points but they did come back from being down 16 and took the lead. That takes stops! With Pemsl establishing himself, getting Cook back in about a month will be a huge boost going into conference play.

Side Note: Baer is becoming one of my new favorite Hawkeyes. Love watching that guy, he pumps me up!

I would put the odds of Pemsl ending up better than Cook at about 40%. Meaning it's less likely to happen but not that much less likely. Remember his development got slowed down with injuries so he's probably further away from his ceiling than Cook is.

If they can continue that defense of take away the easy stuff and make the other team shoot outside, it will be good enough to win some. Not every team will shoot like ND did (altho it seems like they do). I would rather get into a shooting battle than have to shoot good just to keep up with their guaranteed layups like we were seeing.

But maybe it's the latter...

Did a quick analysis of the team. I might be off on a few things but please forgive me. I understand that some will jump all over me about AAU. AAU is a necessary thing against talented players. Coaching, defense, and team play is generally weak. So I DO look at High School info where they likely have decent coaching or at least have to compete for a sport. In general, this team was put together with players accustomed to playing against slower and shorter players. OK, so Diopp from OSU and Finke from IL played for relatively smallish schools. Lyle from OSU didn't go to a big school but they (Bossi) played bigger competition and had a really good team. I saw them play. However, Iowa players are really shorted by number of games. Other states play in highly competitive holiday tourneys.

It takes a while to adjust to speed. It really does. This team didn't have much experience. They will get better. I do have concerns about the upside, but Fran has demonstrated improvements. This group will not likely compete for a championship as is. This talent is likely going to be competing for mid pack at best. Lot's of role players (decent one's).

Can't emphasis it enough. This is sort of like when Iowa Football does well in Big and goes to a bowl against speed.

Enjoy watching them improve. Don't get your hopes up much. If Fran gets these guys going, he is a guru.

Jok, from Des Moines. For sure a good shooter. Des Moines not hotbed of basketball
Cook: Stl. Louis.Didn't play a tough HS schedule.
Pemsyl: Dubugue. Small school against weaker competition. It is still Wahlert.
Bohanon - It's still Linn Mar
Baer - It's still Bettendorf
Ellingson - Not a big high school - decent competition.
Uhl - small school
Moss - OK good credentials. Young
Wagner - not a big school but decent credentials.
Williams - St Theresa is a very bad very small basketball school. Would be like Tri County playing Lone Tree.

This team has potential. This year may not be good, but not to be that guy...

Would you rather lose like last night, or back to the Lick days of 53-35 for final score???

This team needs to clean up a lot of things. Good coaching will do that. Let's see where they are at the end of the year. If they haven't improved at all, then we can be concerned a bit for future.
