ND - Positives

Turnovers were way way down last night. That's a huge positive. J Bohannon looks like the the pg many of us were hoping he could be. He had a tremendous all around game. Obviously, he had a breakout scoring performance but he also did a great job distributing the ball, feeding the post, taking care of the ball and playing good D.

Pemsl had a great day offensively (albeit vs an undersized team).

They made their FTs!

Defense was better but still not where it needs to be. We saw significant progress despite missing the teams 2nd leading scorer.

If you looked closely, you saw a glimpse of the future. That first half was the best they have played all year...and for about 7 minutes of the second half. Moss needs to play more...and we need to get Wagner to just rebound and play relentless defense and stop thinking about the offensive end. He's pressing so hard there. Bohannon showed some chops and confidence last night. Still very concerned about his defense against quicker guards...not ND's strength.

This team has potential. This year may not be good, but not to be that guy...

Would you rather lose like last night, or back to the Lick days of 53-35 for final score???

This team needs to clean up a lot of things. Good coaching will do that. Let's see where they are at the end of the year. If they haven't improved at all, then we can be concerned a bit for future.

I agree to a point, but you state it like it has to be one or the other. Why can't we play an exciting up tempo offense, but get things up to speed on defense. I can't see why we can't have it both ways. If I had to chose if I'd want a great offense and respectable defense or a respectable offense and great defense, I'd chose the respectable offense and great defense.

We may be more fun to watch this year, but its more frustrating because we can't expect to outscore our opponents every night. While the offense is solid, success will be measured on our ability to improve on the defensive end.

Every single team aside from maybe Kentucky has rebuilding years. That's reality. If you're expecting Iowa to not go through a rebuilding year then you're a freaking lunatic. It's that simple. I thought last year would be a rebuilding year too, and Fran actually got that team into the tourney so that was a pleasant surprise. I thought this season would be a rebuilding year as well, and so far it's looking like that's exactly what it's going to be, and I'm perfectly fine with that. It happens to teams with a much better history than Iowa. I'm not delusional enough to believe Iowa is above that.

I'm excited about the future of this team. Everyone was making fun of the Bohannon commitment... well he certainly showed the ability to knock down the deep shot at this level last night against a pretty damn good Notre Dame team. Pemsl and Cook are gonna be a special pair to watch the next couple years. Add Weiskamp and Connor McCaffery into the mix and it's going to fun. Just have to be patient and enjoy watching them develop.

Odds are that at least one of Garza and Nunge will be good too.

I think your memory is off on that one.

White made 21 3's and shot 36% from 3 his senior year. His best ability playing the 3 was taking it to the rim and going to the line. Garza, Pemsl and Cook are pure posts and I don't think either can play the 3, especially not defend it

A lot would depend on who the 2 guards were. If they both were to shoot like Bohannon, the 3 posts would have more room than one post had when White played the 3 his sophomore year. We were soon bad at shooting 3's that year.

I'm just going off of memory here to try to picture a future lineup.

Current roster (older players not listed):

Wagner - SO
Dailey - FR
Bohannon - FR
Moss - FR
Cook - FR
C. Williams - SO
Kriener - FR
Ellingson - SO
Pemsl - FR
Baer - SO

Incoming talent:

2017
Garza - C
Nunge - PF
C. McCaffery - SG (maybe PG)

2018
J. Wieskamp - ESPN Top 60 SG

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love looking at that list and coming up with a rotation. My best guess would be this:

2017
Bohannon
Moss
Baer
Pemsl
Cook

Off the bench:
Guards: Williams, Ellingson, Dailey, McCaffery
Bigs: Garza, Kriener, Wagner

Transfers: Wouldn't be surprised to see Dailey or C. Williams transfer out.

2018
Bohannon/McCaffery
Moss/Wieskamp
Baer/Moss
Pemsl/Cook
Garza/Cook

Lots of different combos you could go with in both 2017 and 2018. Specifically difficult to project 2018. A lot depends on how ready McCaffery and Wieskamp are when they come in. I think Wieskamp will have the ability to start right away, but then what does that do with Moss if he continues to improve? Potentially moves Baer back into being an energy guy off the bench which I think he's comfortable with (if you moved Moss to the 3).

Obviously a couple guys are going to transfer out. It's anyone's best guess who that would be. Probably Dailey, C. Wililams, Ellingson, and potentially Kriener.

Basically we just need CyTwins to keep targeting our recruits and/or young players. Each one that he makes fun of or belittles ends up being a stud. First it was Aaron White, then it was Jok, and his latest is Bohannon (far from decided yet, but looking pretty promising early on). That dude is wrong about literally everything.

No kidding, Cytwins is clueless. I'd bet you are missing him mocking Baer as well, and I will bet you his next target is Garza.

How could someone make fun of Garza with his offer list and where he is ranked at? He's going to make an impact as soon as he gets here. Same with Baer, he's as productive as they come

What ever happened to recruiting a lock down defender...ala Eric May. Geez, it would be nice if one of our 5 guys was a stopper who could control one of the other teams scorers. Who is that on this team? 92 points a game tells you...when asked the question, all our players pointed to someone else. You have to be able to play defense to win championships...and get stops in big moments. Honestly, I thought Wagner was that guy, but he's lost confidence or something. This is why we won't beat any of the top teams...we can score...we just can't defend teams with three scorers.

The ND game was first one I watched most of and I was entertained. Jok had an off night and I have seen Cook look real good but many of the other players looked good.
