NCAA pushes $2K increase for athletes

My son is a D1 track athlete. Not all athletic programs give full ride scholarships. He runs cross country in the fall, an indoor track season in the winter and outdoor track in the spring. He trains and lift the entire year and doesn't have the opportunity to work a much of a job. The university earns more from him than they give him in scholarship money.

A small stipend would be nice - money for an ocaissional movie or a pizza isn't too much to give to a kid that gives so much to these universities.

What university makes money off of their track program?

I am really tired of hearing about the "free" education scholarship athletes receive. Since when is "free" working 12 months out of the year on conditioning, full time plus during the season on football (or basketball, wrestling, lacrosse, volleyball, track/field, et al) in addition to classes, risking pain and injury that many of us can't imagine, and, the chances of a college career turning into a pro sports bonanza are somewhere between slim and none. I am really proud of the fact that the "big money" sports are supporting the hard working, dedicated kids who are scholarship athletes in so called "minor" sports! Ask those of us who are Hawkeye fans if we are willing to pony up for $2 grand for each scholarship athlete at Iowa. Hawk supporters are already willing to improve facilities, pay coaches great and well deserved salaries, and essentially fund an athletic program for college kids, including the "free" education, without one tax dollar being spent. How much do you commit to the U of I athletic program every year? How much do you give the alumni association? How much do you provide the College of Education (for example)? IF you are not doing your share, don't *****.

2 cocktails = permission to rant!

What is still not clear is how you are a fan of Iowa football or the college game in general when you have such an abysmal opinion of the players that they are all about a life of "booze, tattoos, and shoes" - WTF? You do know that most college football players are not thugs? As far as this stipend have you considered that for a program like Iowa with a high number of out of state players and the ever rising cost of transportation that the extra 2k a year could go a long ways to offset those costs?

I don’t’ know whether you are still traumatized from your youth of never being good enough at athletics or maybe stuffed in a locker too many times but consider this an intervention.

Wow nice. I didn't know if you knew this but they do make student loans. Anyone can get them (even if you're on scholarship) so I guess if they NEED the money they can go ahead and get that if they want to. And yes I realize that not all of them are thugs, but I'm just saying what do they need the money for? They are given a lot of things. They get clothes for free, and lots of them. They get free food, and it's good food. Do they need travel funds, that might be it, but they still are able to work a little so they can make some money for that. Again loans.

Also, I could beat you at any sport.:D

I would like to see this for only families that meet a certain household income minimum.

And not 2k, maybe 1,200 (essentially an extra $100 per month)

So says the guy who never had the makings of a varsity athlete. The Big Ten rakes in millions of dollars in revenue from its football TV contract. The league distributed more than $20 million to each school last year (in part by the Big Ten Network) players should get some of that windfall - and yes just to prevent lawsuits all athletes, non-revenue included should and will share in the money.

PJHawk, you are such a smart man. Your intellect is incredible!

The thing is 95% of the players on the Iowa team don't either. You could replace almost any one of them with average high school player X and still bring in the same amount of money. Why should McNutt only get paid as much as the 4th string TE when he's seeing people every where wear his jersey while the 4th string TE hasn't brought in a dime to the university?

So you think the average fan is coming to Kinnick to see 5-6 specific players? Rather than the 22-30 players that actually play?

The jersey purchasing is only part of the equation.

No, I think the vast majority of fans would turn out to watch Iowa no matter who was on the field, as evidenced by the fact that we drew 50,000 plus when we were absolutely terrible in the late 90's. There's only a few players who fans go out of their way to watch. Those guys are the ones who should be making the money, the Stanzi's, the Clayborns, the McNutts.

Talk about major development on this issue - look out NCAA here comes a lawsuit you are going to lose:

Petition seeks slice of college TV money

More than 300 major college football and men's basketball players are telling the NCAA and college presidents they want a cut of ever-increasing TV sports revenue to fatten scholarships and cover all the costs of getting a degree, with athletes picking up still more grant money when they graduate.

The players from Arizona, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Purdue and UCLA have signed a petition asking the NCAA to "realize its mission to educate and protect us with integrity." The National College Players Association, an athletes' advocacy group, provided The Associated Press with copies of the document for release Monday. Players started sending the petition to the NCAA last week.

I think it is time we quite the farce that is the D1 college athlete. To be honest, many of these kids have no business being in college to begin with. I say pay the kids some meager amount, allow them to attend classes if they desire (few of them will) and run the entire thing as a semipro feeder league for the NFL and NBA. I am only partially joking about this.
