Nashville local media on Vanderbilt playing Iowa

I've lived in Middle Tennessee for the past 25 years having grown up in Muscatine, Iowa.
The SEC Flag is the modern-day equivalency of the Confederate Battle Flag, in the way it is mentioned.
So, it's the University of SEC at Vanderbilt vs Iowa.
SEC fans will always stick together.
Alabama fans will cheer for Auburn in the bowl games, because....SEC.
Michigan fans will never cheer for Ohio State in the bowl games, because they are ALWAYS rivals.

It's only Monday morning, and with the Tennessee Titans winning to now being 2-11 is taking up all of the local sports talk radio energy.

Yes, this is Vanderbilt's best season ever, and they were hoping for a more Blue Blood team in Michigan, instead of Iowa.
The Vanderbilt coaching staff has handled this quite well.

Just a small sampling, so far.

Chad Withrow, Outkick and former local Nashville 104.5 FM talk show host:
"Vanderbilt’s greatest season in program history will end in a bowl game against Iowa. That is tragic."

Jon Burton, CBS Sports - Nashville TV station
"They (Iowa) haven't seen this offense and they haven't seen Pavia.
I think (Vanderbilt) is going to Rickroll Iowa and let all of their frustration out."

I hope all these quotes make their way into the Iowa locker room and they keep them coming. I remember the last time Iowa faced a SEC team with this attitude, Mississippi State, in this very bowl game in fact. I'll never forget the reactions of that MSU podcaster (I forget his name).

I am surprised we are facing Vandy, I thought for sure the Gator Bowl was going to take them.

I'm sure Vandy is pretty good. I'll hang my hat on that Iowa kept Indiana Oregon and USCs offenses from lighting up the scoreboards too. We just couldn't stop em at the end when it mattered. Well in USCs case our O couldn't do anything in the 2nd half. I was actually impressed that Oregon and Indiana didn't get frustrated and were able to do what they did at the end of those games. That'll be the question for Vandy. If they go 3 straight possessions and have to punt and say get down 10-0 against us how will they respond like Indiana and Oregon did?

I like the matchup should be a fun one. It's why we have bowl games

This is great. Keep it coming.

My analysis is that Vandy's offense is very, very good but their defense is very average. I think we can run and pass on them.

It will be an interesting game.

I like that Iowa is the underdog. It is one of the better bowl games in one of the nicest areas. It should be a competitive game.

We will possibly be the most physical team they have played in quite some time.

I get it, they finally have 1 good season and their reward is playing Iowa. No one in the SEC brags about beating Iowa as we are not a blue blood. But, OTOH, 10 years from now if we look back on this bowl game we will be like, we played Vandy, they were actually good back then? We will still be getting our 8 win seasons and they will return to the bottom of the SEC.

That was genuine, you can tell in listening to him. This is why I feared playing Vandy, they are going to play this game like it's their Super Bowl and I highly doubt they have many players skip this game, if any. This bowl game is a huge treat for them, it's the biggest bowl game in the history of Vanderbilt football. Granted they played in this bowl back when it was in Atlanta and called the Hall Of Fame Bowl but this bowl was not as prestigious back then. I expect the stadium to be packed full of Vandy fans. I was hoping to score cheap tickets but I'll bet Vandy fans scoop up whatever tickets Iowa doesn't want.

I would love to know if they have any significant opt outs due to transfer or NFL prep. Sounds like their coaching staff is sticking together, just like Iowa. So this should be a very competitive game, and the results will count on both teams overall record at the end of the year. So, it sure will be a real game. In fact, the win will count just the same in the overall record as against PSU and a loss would count the same as the close loss to Indiana. About as real a game as it comes! Go Hawks!!

It's all about one guy, their QB. If Pavia opts out it'll be a very different game.

F Vandy. Act like you been there for krist's sake. You've been the dormat of that conference for all these yrs and they have one good season and they strut around like they're freaking Alabama.

Well, I can counter they haven't gone up against Iowa's D either. The few games they've gone up a similar ranked D this year they've score under 20 pts, so there is that.

Vandy, Phil P. and co are getting a month to prepare for your "prolific" O. Phil Parker getting a month is like a year for most. Enjoy your frustration playing Iowa's D on Dec. 31, 2025!

So, this is a game of who's going to flinch first or the most. Phil Parker is not going to flinch the most.

....drop mic.

From the look of things, I would be very surprised if he did opt out. This caps off his achievements. Pavia is very good, but he is not a typical NFL quarterback. He's 6'0", 207 lb dual threat QB. Remember how high Brad Banks went in the draft.

Each team has a single player in the portal so far. Both QBs from way at the back of the depth chart.

Vandy had a nice season, but let's not get too excited about this new era of Commodore Football. They played three cupcakes plus Va Tech. So, 4. They did not beat anyone that is currently ranked, so they mostly fed on the bottom half of the SEC, and got thumped by Bama and probably their best game was a close loss to Texas. They beat three conference teams with winning records (LSU, Missouri, and Tennessee). They were 8, 9, and 10 in the conference. They had a very good season, better than Iowa's for sure, but nothing so good that matching up with Iowa is a sleight.

A bit of paper tiger in that 10-2 record.

I had not heard of a team clamoring for a 13th game during the end of the season to try to give them the push to CFP. It sounded like it was in the works but fell through. Would ncaa allow this? If can attempt to play another game, why haven’t more teams gone that route? If everyone else plays 12 and one team pulls an extra, how’s that fair? Why wouldn’t teams that are on that edge of making playoffs all attempt this?

“There were too many hurdles to clear to actually have it happen," Lea said after the 12-team bracket reveal, which had the Commodores on the outside looking in at No. 14. "I think it would have been one of the great stories in the history of our sport to be able to do something like that.”

They Beat Mizzou and won @ Tennessee. Better wins than anything on our schedule. S Carolina turned out to be dogmeat. Losses to Texas and Bama. No shame there. They're a good team.

54th in Total D. Good against the rush (15th) but weak against the pass (119th). Best rushing D we've played against all year outside of Indiana

It'll be an interesting match-up.
