Name the things Kirk learned from Hayden Fry?

Not sure on the bigger hill...the cupboard was absolutely bare in '98-'99 that was coming off some awful years. I agree that Hayden won bigger and better against lesser comoetition, but I also think the bottom teams in the B1G were worse than in more recent times and the nonBCS schools have closed the talent gap in recent times.

Again, overall KF doesn't match Hayden(Hawkeye Legend). And there is plenty of good reason to have angst and concern the last couple of years. I simply don't feel the gap us so much to state they can't be spoken of in tandem.

Actually it was a bigger hill. You're using one season to judge the level of the program. I'm using 17 seasons. Can you see how those things differ?

Yes...I see the difference.

As I have stated...Hayden > Ferentz. I am simply stating its not such an enormous difference that it somehow is an insult to mention one with the other.

That's fair. Just a question cuz you seem reasonable and agreeable. Would Kirk have sought an interview to be the head coach at Iowa if they had 17 consecutive non-winning seasons in 1999 and were known as a coaching graveyard?

Not sure, probably not. But Iowa wasn't exactly a dream job then either. Hayden was a different, brilliant breed of man for a lot if reasons.

I agree with the thrust of your reply. But in 1999 I think it wasn't just Stoops and Ferentz who realized that Iowa was a place you could win at. It wasn't as attractive as Mich/OSU but winning and fan loyalty was there for a good coach. Personally I think if KF had taken on the challenge that Hayden had accepted in 1979 that he would've last about 4 seasons. Credit to Hayden for lasting 20.

Fair assumption. I don't know many coaches that could do what Hayden did...and that tree of coaches...just wow.

Hayden
Iowa: 143–89–6 98–61–5
Total: 232–178–10

Kirk
Iowa: 102–75 59–52
Total: 114–96

Kirk will have to average 8 wins over the next 5 years including now to get to where hayden was. Kirk also has the advantage of playing one more game per season. Also, Kirk had an already established program. Hayden built the modern Hawkeye program including the emblem. Kirk is 7 games over .500 in league play. Hayden 37 games over. Is there still a debate here?

Just for fun I tried to bring Kirk's numbers in line with Hayden's. So I multiplied his total X 2.

Hayden was 232-178-10

Kirk's numbers were 228-192.

But when I look at those numbers I remember that Hayden turned around 3 programs that had built-in handicaps. What a remarkable legend. His accomplishments were more impressive than Joe Pa's IMO.

Fry also integrated the SWC. If you don't understand what a pair of brass ones it took to introduce the first black player into the SWC (read: Texas) then you don't understand American history.

Iowa wins in Ames, in dominating fashion, and yet the usual cast of characters is here complaining that it wasn't dominant enough.

Since ISU broke the streak in 1998, they've historically won the close games, as three 3 points will attest - 2001 and 2011 in Ames, and last year in Iowa City. So tonight Iowa wins what ended up being a close game (but not really) in a place that has been a house of horrors, but I guess certain people will always find things to complain about.

Ok let's all be honest. It's really not fair to compare anyone to Hayden. They just won't measure up. Read "a high porch picnic" or Zabel's biography. The man is truly a living legend. We could have done much worse than Kirk. In today's era, Hayden would have had millions thrown at him and it'd have been tough for us to keep him even at $4million/year. If you got to watch him, just appreciate it and hopefully Kirk and this new staff can get on the right page and sometime soon start walking again instead of crawling. 3+ years removed from an Orange bowl win.

You are the usual suspect who posts something stupid and unrelated to the topic. Your comment that the game wasn't close confirms that you don't want to be taken seriously.

Kirk wasn't a bad hire. He took the baton from Hayden and ran with it. We've been very fortunate as a program for the last few decades. I think the replies illustrate what the two men have in common. I hope the next 34 years are as enjoyable as the previous 34.

I don't think it was close, and the box score will back that up. ISU picked up a lot of yards late when it was a 20 point lead and they had to totally abandon the run game that Iowa had shut down anyway. ISU never had the ball past midfield when it was a one possession game, and never held the lead.

If you'd actually read and comprehended my post, I did mention that it was a "close" game, even if it only looks that way from the final scoreline. The fact of the matter is that Iowa dominated this game on both sides of the ball from about the 7 minute mark of the 1st quarter to the 7 minute mark of the 4th.

The constant knock on Ferentz (at least lately) has been that his team can't win close games. In regards to ISU, it's been that he doesn't beat them enough, and that his record in Ames has been abysmal. Tonight, Kirk's team won a close game in Ames.

How to run up the score............oh, was this supposed to be serious?

Hey Olympia how ya doin? Do you still post on Howe's site? That place has really cratered. They must've banned half their users. Oh and yes, I am seriously looking for replies as to what the padawan learned from the jedi master. Back when we were the bullies of the B1G I thought of this question often.

It was so "dominating" and "not really" close that we were one superhuman interception and freak hook and ladder away from a shocking defeat.

You seem like one of those kind of people primed to wail "THANK YOU SIR! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!"

I bet they love it when you waddle onto to a used car lot.

And that IMO should be cause to quite unthrilled with the way it turned out.

You shouldn't have a chance to lose a game that your team dominates. Yet it happens with Iowa.

Fry would have gone over the top with play action a couple times and put the game out of reach early, conservative kirk thinks he needs to save that look for latter and just eat some clock and punt.

One thing I liked about HF was he wasn't afraid to step on the other teams throat when dominating a game. He was also pretty good about running up the score and sending a message for other teams to think about. KF just doesn't have that killer instinct. He wants to project sportsmanship at all costs including losing some games he shouldn't have.
