Name the things Kirk learned from Hayden Fry?

Multiple years worse than 1998? You mean one year worse than 1998, which was 1999, when he was cleaning up the disaster that Hayden left behind?

And last year's 4-8 was on Hayden as well, right? LOL. How many of Hayden's boyz were playing in 2002?

I was there as well. That was depressing. Even worse, we had come on a bus trip and it's harder to leave early when it's a bus trip. That team was bad and wanted the season to end, you could see it.

Piling on a legendary coach with cancer isn't just anti-Hawkeye. It's anti-human.

They allowed the game to be in doubt after dominating the game for 3.5 quarters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should have heard Dolphin and Ed P. They admitted to being very nervous with about two minutes left in the game. Good coached teams beat up bad teams. They don't let them back in the game. Good grief. Is this not obvious to everyone that saw the game tonight????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey dude, calm the hell down. Whether it is a one point W over UNI or a 56 point thrashing of Iowa State it doesn't matter. Both are Ws in the column we care about. We won. The losing streak has now turned into a winning streak. Enjoy or find another team. Ohio State hasn't lost in a long time, maybe you should be an OSU fan.

Please get over yourself. I wasn't piling on. It was what was happening in that stadium during that game.

Take your own advice, You act like that one game erases a legendary resume.

Absolutely not. No one knew Hayden had cancer except him and his secretary. He admits that he lost his energy and I applaud his effort. Fry is a legend, but that team was done.

If Hayden Fry had been subjected to the scrutiny that KF has suffered (along with nearly every other head college football coach in the country), he would have bailed out of coaching long before his record became as impressive as it did. And just to be clear, I have more respect for HF than for about any coach in college football...his courage, his absolute ability to be color blind, in a day when that was a serious risk, places him above about anyone I can think of who is currently in the business. I would like to think there was a way to compare the success of HF and KF...but they existed in totally different worlds. We are likely doing them both a disservice in our futile attempts to compare them. And, given the history of some of the posters on this board, many are only interested in finding yet another route toward their foregone conclusion that KF has ruined the Hawk Football program for the foreseeable future. BTW: Good luck with that endeavor.

You missed the point on multiple levels. Please try again.

And guess what, that game didn't tank the program like the Hayden haters are alleging. Kirk had much more to work with than Hayden did. Why don't people like you just answer the question on what Kirk learned from Hayden rather than throw a tantrum over a legit question.

No tantrum here dude. Kirk earned how to run a program from Hayden - top to bottom. I would say Kirk's love of a good running game comes from Hayden. How did I do? :)

Whoa now. I don't think any legit Hawk fan on this board has anything but love for Hayden, if they do I don't see them as a Hawk fan. An honest answer to the seemingly cynical topic question is KF likely learned quite a lot from Fry, but I think most didn't take the question at face value. If it was a honest question....I apologize...won't be the first or last time I am wrong.

In 1999, I was happy to see the return of the Hawkeye uniforms from the 1980s.
Looking back, the banana peels, then the Reebok jerseys afternoon, were not so bad, after all.

Ummm what?

I brought up that game initially, and I certainly did not imply that it tanked the program, it was simply the exclamation point on the downward spiral the program was heading down in 1998. To say that Kirk had more to work with is stretching it, because he had very little at the beginning except ridiculous expectations and resentment that he wasn't Bob Stoops.

Look, we all love Hayden, alright, but we can't get into this argument over how great he was, because he has plenty of warts on his resume as well, not unlike Kirk.

Ok here's why Kirk had an advantage. 17 straight losing seasons vs 1. And facilities facilities facilities.

Are we still arguing? Yes Kirk didn't have a ton of talent to work with. And I'll say this, in Kirk's first 5 to 6 year stretch, I was proud as we all were. But a lot of that talent left. Beilema, Joe Philbin and a few others. What we were left with was patchwork. When you don't have assistants that plan to be future coaches or further aspirations, then how far can you get? Kirk might have a better bowl record but the Big Ten just happens to be set up bowl wise better than any conference in football. 4 teams get a New Years day bowl. The rest play cupcakes. The last 7 or 8 years outside of 2008 and 2009 which were NFL teams it's been a disappointment.

I'll say this: we're in the home stretch of Kirk's tenure. Next year we should be much better imo. He has the chance here if we can get to 6 wins to finish this thing out in style. Let's get one more Big Ten championship. Heck all you have to do is go 7-5 and win the championship game. (wisconsin)
Compare that to winning the Big Ten in Hayden's day. Hayden was a great leader, great spokesman, great teacher, great father, great mentor, great coach and could get his ego out of the way enough to have assistants capable of being head coaches. I think Kirk has an ego problem. You can't question him. If you do, you get snark and retort. I'm hoping as he gets older, that changes. I like this current staff and think they have a chance. Believe it or not, I like the play calling from Greg Davis this year too.

There are no "Hayden haters" on this board. You got just what you wanted with your original post and that was some argument. You were fishing for the "Ferentz sucks" and learned nothing from Fry answer and when you didn't get it from everyone, you have to call them "Hayden Haters".
Fry was a legend and a great Hawkeye. Ferentz has done some great things too but regardless of his final coaching record, will never be revered the way Hawk fans do Hayden.

Hey we're all Hawks here. I sure as heck ain't rooting against the Hawks just so we're clear from everyone. Here's my dream scenario: We get to 6-6 this year. Next year we get to 8-4. Then in Jake's Senior year we win the big ten title and Kirk gets his Rose Bowl. He coaches as long as he wants and Brian takes over when he's done. I think Greg Davis will be better than some thought. I already like what he's done this year. Phil Parker will grow and improve as a DC. I love the blitzing and don't mind giving up a big play here and there. It sure beats an 80 yard 10 min drive grinding down our d-line and linebackers. And some youth within the other spots. Definitely need to get back to being a great special teams team. That was Kirk's MO in the beginning. What happened?

Hayden taught Kirk to ignore fans with negative opinions and to keep on using the system you believe in.

Hayden blew big lead in game against Indiana. Think it was first game he coached. I was around when these boards first started and there was plenty of venom towards him for way he used (or didn't use) Tim Dwight and Tavian Banks. There were also other criticisms during his final years. For Hawkeye fans, to bash the Head football coach is nothing new.
