My thoughts on what should happen to Penn State

This is exactly what I have been saying. But, I think they need to do it in agreement with the B1G and NCAA. These other agencies need to be able to skirt the reponsibility for punishment, so the self-imposed punishment needs to be significant.

Here is a minimum list.

1) Vacate all wins since 1998. That would put JoePa out of any signicant record list and leave PSU as not being able to recruit as having any B1G titles.

2) Have all B1G revenue sharing dollars go into a fund to address law suits to compensate victims. (Good idea from Deace.) But don't cap it at 14 years. Make it as many years as necessary to adhere to final legal obligations.

3) 3 year Bowl ban

4) Reduced on campus visits and scholarships.

5) Two year TV ban.

6) USC rule for all recruits and active players. They need to be able to play transfer and play immediately.

I think this is fairly reasonable, and it would be good if PSU leveled these sacntions on themselves.

I don't think the revenue and TV limitations you mentioned go far enough, though. I think they should not be eligible for BoneG revenue sharing for 5 years, and should be invisible (TV and bowls) for five years. :)

How much did PSU's football program make over the past 12 years? It could be argued that they made these hundreds of millions of dollars at a time when damaging information was being actively suprressed by PSU officials.

Thus, the institution, and not just a few guys, need to pay...and pay.

After reading the NY Times article on Paterno's contract and the way the board was held hostage by Paterno's supporters and family, I honestly believe the only way they can get a handle on this is by shutting the whole program down for a while.

Tell the Paternos they can sit in their luxury suite and watch the turf at Beaver Stadium grow. Rid the program of the psycho element of the supporters. The ones that stick with the program will be the ones that are interested in changing the climate.

This all is a serious cautionary tale for everyone involved in higher education.

why did he not post it in the big 10 section like someone said? he doesn't want his piece amongst the common rabble....have to be 'special'. i guess that goes without saying when someone has to post 'my thoughts' like it even matters.

Perhaps SOME good can come of all of this. My wife is a PsyD. who works with children who have been traumatized, and she and I have talked about this travesty a fair amount.

Perhaps people will be more aware of the signs of abuse, and report it. Perhaps institutions will strongly consider their governance, and the role of the athletic department in university governance. Perhaps victims will be empowered to step forward.

The best thing PSU can do right now is sift through the report, and start making some hard decisions that regain the public's trust. Take down the statue! Stop playing that game on turf for awhile.

The NCAA is going to have to beef up their staff to go into 120 Div 1 football and 360 Div 1 bb programs to check for 100% compliance to the rules for having a Compliance dept staffed up to the rules.

Sure, they can go in and find some rule transgressions at PSU,but there are no rules that cover this....sorry. They might slap penalties on PSU,never know, but it will open up many other schools to similar scrutiny.
Marquette needs to be next as they kept a sexual assault allegation in-house rather than take it to police, only to have one of the accused then have another assault incident. Time for Marquette to get the death penaly...who's next? The NCAA is going to have to hire 10,000 more investigators.

Who said there are ncaa "rules that cover this"?
There aren't any ncaa rules for the rape, that's why the DOE & others will attack this from the legal side.
The ncaa's function is the non functioning compliance dept & subsequent LOIC.

Why is it so hard for people to separate the two.

NCAA = non functioning compliance dept/LOIC
DOE/Law Enforcement = the actual criminal activities

I believe it is called Narcissistic Personality Disorder, ank.

I bet there were several SMU players that had no involvment in recieving improper benefits back in 87 right? Punishments are never fair, and in this situation it really is too bad for the players. The NCAA HAS to come down hard on this institution, because technically they have been profiting off of a "clean image" for years now. Sure the players don't deserve this, but the football office definitely does.

It is kind of like if your Dad has been a serial killer all these years and you find out for the first time. Not something you wanted but now you have to live with it.

THIS!!

The thing is, they can allow any player that wants to transfer and play immediately. It isn't like you would be ending careers. The NCAA could also grant a scholarship limit exception for these players.

All this, "it will hurt the players" talk is BS. It will hurt them more to keep them I that toxic environment.

I don't think blacking out PSU away games is fair to the other team's fans. No televised PSU home games for 4 years seems about right to me.

I believe at this time the guy that started this post should be punched in the FACE.. this man is ugly and has no clue about politics/economics let alone compassionate. Let alone any understanding of the working class... the poor///
