My 2 cents from the PTLtonight

I mean both guys coming out of high school. Devan was a very well-regarded recruit. People here talk about Josh like he was way more highly regarded than devan. That just isn't the case.

Thinking about it, it will be really hard to compare the two because of Lick's slow down offense. Might have to go to some percentage of production measurement.

It won't be hard to compare at all, there are plenty of tempo free stats out there.

I saw Devan play in high school. He played for a class A school,Winnebago, and was all everything, but the level of ball was not at CR Washington. Devan was already a star as a sophmore in hs,and just did not progress athletically after that, really.
He was not as highly rated as Josh out of high school, and not as physically advanced. I like what I see of Josh's upper body strength..not as skinny as I imagined. His handle is better than Devans also...and passing.

Defensively, Bawinkel was the equivalent of a lawn chair on the court. Offensively, he was a respectable 3 point shooter when not guarded or hurried. The only reason he was recruited by the other schools was to be the "white kid who can shoot" aka the "specialist" in 2011. He would not have seeen the floor unless the other team was in a zone, his team is trailing by 3 or in some other obvious 3 point shooting scenario.

Unfortunately playing under the big top circus orchestrated by Lickliter, he was thrust into a starting role and asked to play major minutes and got exposed. Ogelsby has better handles, is taller, more athletic and, IMO, has a much higher ceiling because he is playing for a coach that will put him in situations where he can succeed.

If, by "that isn't the case" you mean that Josh O is ranked the #36 shooting guard and #122 overall by Rivals, and Bawinkel was unranked in both, then you're right.

Keep in mind, I had nothing against Devan's game, he was what he was. However, Josh is, and will be, a much better, well-rounded, complete and much more athletic player.

From now on, I will refer to Oglesby as Josh.0. Josh.0 may need a little time to get used to the speed of things and also if I could play basketball and grew up a Hawk fan I would be freaking out right now. I know he is an athlete but c'mon give him a break until at least after the exhibiton game.

I agree, but I don't think it's that much pressure to expect him to be better than Devan Bawinkel. I'd pretty much put that as his worse case performance by his SR year, and yes, I'd expect better than that this year. Expecting him to be on an All Big Ten team as a FR would be too much pressure, not providing 8-10 min of good basketball at both ends of the court.

Josh has a better overall game than Devan. And when he stepped on campus he became the best outside shooter Iowa has, right there with Matt.

Iowa couldn't buy a shot last year. A guy like Josh will be big in widening the floor and letting guys like Cartwright and others get into the lane.

He's not going to be dominant, but he brings an element that Iowa lacked last year.

Good point on Iowa not being able to buy a shot last year. IMO, Oglesby will more than earn his scholarship if he can develop a knack for making shots at critical points in games. No doubt Gatens can shoot, but the dude disappears in crunch time and we need somebody (other than Cartwright) who can hit shots down the stretch. As much as I dislike OSU, Diebler hit a ton of big shots for them, even if his overall game had been average up to that point.
