Music City Bowl Game Thread

for all of the good stuff Sully did, he's not the passing QB Id like to see. That mizzou QB is the real deal.
Even if we had Missouri’s QB it wouldn’t matter, we don’t have the type of receivers they do in the SEC and we won’t ever get them here. We’re a running team, the Big Ten is a running league outside of Oregon and OSU, and what Sullivan brings is his feet, and opening the box up to free up guys like KJ, Moulton, and Patterson. He’s what we need.

“Even if we had Missouri’s QB it wouldn’t matter, we don’t have the type of receivers they do in the SEC and we won’t ever get them here.”

Truth spoken here, however we can now buy what we need. The changes in buying players even’s things out for schools like Iowa who have plenty of bucks to buy players.

The problem is the powers that be don’t want to peel out the bucks to keep up with the “pay to play” schools. Sports is king with many of the most successful sports programs. In years past many of them did it under the table. Now the cards are on the table and everyone is going to see what the Nerds running things really think about Iowa athletics.

It’s a put up or shut up world now. Chances are we fold and walk away from the table. We will choose to pretend like we are a player but in reality will hope to make underrated players into above average players and then see some of them leave like the Charlie’s of the Purdue’s out there.

Seriously the Purdue’s out there???? Effing sad. How did that happen? It amazing what a receiver can do when he is good and the coach calls plays designed to get the ball in those types of players hands ………. or choose to run the ball, win enough games to finish in the top 1/4 of the conference and get renewed contacts and pay raises for a 1/4 of a century.

Kirk is not stupid and knows the Iowa game. He is above average as a B1G coach but not dumb enough to kill the goose that lays the Hawkeye golden eggs for him and his family.

Like I said in another post on the basketball side of the forums, he is a very good coach and teaches these kids values that will benefit them the rest of their lives which is a wonderful thing. For sports fan purist it is painful. Maybe the U of I will surprise us and peel out the bucks to play at the B1G boys table, but don’t hold your breath.

They call that every single time now. BS or not Schulte has to be smarter than that. He knew he was out of bounds when he shoved the guy.
I can't say I've noticed a huge difference recently. It's always been a judgement call. There were a few others even in the game yesterday that weren't called.

I would say one thing that has changed, however, is that it's obvious players and coaches are "coached" to sell it when the chance presents itself.

Years ago, players and coaches would kind of just stand there and stare, only reacting if it was egregious. Now, even the slightest touch, and the offensive player -while screaming in agony - throws himself into the rows of Gatorade and trainers on their smart phones, while the players and coaches nearby react like someone was shot.

Nevertheless, yes, the Iowa players should have been smart and not put themselves into a position to get punked. I haven't looked at the replay, but in real time it looked to me that another player (? Craig) actually did the "shove." Schulte was positioned in a way where the official couldn't see who actually did it.

Speaking of Schulte, I just can't wrap my mind around what has happened with our DBs.

Phil hangs his hat on developing defensive players, especially the backs. It became very apparent early in the season that several players hadn't taken that "leap" we normally see, such as Lee, Hall, Nwankpa, etc. You could tell that Phil desperately was trying his best to light a fire at times, but nothing came to fruition.

Is it an anomaly? I guess time will tell, but the luxury Kirk has had to get ultra-conservative knowing that the defense would carry the team through to the finish line has evaporated (something you would think he would have realized in the first half yesterday....).

Fry,

Why would you say Iowa can't get these types of receivers? While Iowa State is not in the SEC, they sure get much better receivers than Iowa does. If you can get them to Ames Iowa, you can get them to Iowa City with the right type of offense, which Iowa doesn't have now.

That's on coaching philosophy.

Wrong. ISU doesn’t have those types of receivers. In no way can you compare big 12 teams with SEC teams. Look at what Texas is doing to ASU and ASU absolutely hosed Iowa state. Does not compare

I’ve said it before, it’s recruiting coming to roost from the Brian years. We were a national laughing stock and that has a huge effect, I don’t care what anyone says. I said it was going to happen back then and it is now

Whatever the perspective here the point of ISU having better receivers is well taken. You could even throw QB's in the mix too.

Fryowa is correct in that Brian left a mess to clean up. At the same time the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and Kirk has spent most of his career as a head coach running a very conservative offensive philosophy.
The top receivers and QB's are going to want to be involved in air raid type of offenses thus drawing attention to themselves and promoting themselves and their future NFL potential. What Kirk does has been over all successful in that the Iowa program is recognized as a upper 1/4 percent of the Big Ten program and that's amazing given the mediocre play at the QB and wide receivers positions.

1st have Sully way different than 2nd half Sully. Can't find a receiver to throw to to save his life (literally) in the 2nd half and zero confidence in his throws in 2nd. Held onto the ball way too long courting trouble, not able to make up a mind to throw or run, like brain was swamped. I am wondering if some of the hard hits he took in the first half affected him as he simply shut off. Same guy in both halves and Iowa wins this game.

Receivers want targets and a QB that can get them the ball. While our playbook is expanding we still have zero dependence on the passing game and still don't have someone that can consistently get them the ball. ISU, as much as we hate it, can throw the ball and therefore are a Ames is a reasonable destination for quality receivers. Unfortunately until we solve the "who comes first the QB or the WR's" question I don't see how were even supposed to successfully find them in the portal. Lets be real are we going to be winning bidding wars for portal targets at a position that plays a minimal role in our offense?

I do agree though that while ISU receivers would be an improvement they're still no where near the quality your going to find in the south.
