Mossbrucker hurt?

Per Kirk's presser he was benched:

Q. Is Meyer your field goal kicker?
COACH FERENTZ: We went with him today. He, I guess, missed the one, but came back and nailed the one at the end there. We just like some things he’s doing. And Trent practiced better this week as well. But we’ll continue to look at that, but for right now we’ll continue with Mike.

I don't know. Not sure if he'd bench him just for the partially blocked extra point. Either way, we missed our first FG of the year, but also made our first FG, so if Meyer can be accurate and consistent, that'll be good.

I'm thinking that perhaps Ferentz has given up on Mossbrucker/Murray. If one comes out and just blows them away in practice, then thatmght change things. But Meyer I think will give us at least as much accuracy as Murray (and Mossbrucker wasn't anymore accurate than Murray this spring and summer). If KF thinks that, then why not build for the future at that position? Meyer seems to possibly flirt with Kaeding range as far as power. If he can get his accuracy improved, he could be the GREAT kicker that we've lacked since Kaeding.

Mossbrucker has the slowest delivery or route to the football. He takes a high slow step and then goes. I'm sure it's a timing thing, but he really slows down and gives people a chance to get in there and block it. Especially when he kicks it low!

All 3 kickers are inconsistant. Murray obviously is dealing with an injury and Mossbrucker
kicks the ball too low at times. Meyer has the most leg strength, kicks the ball with the highest launch angle and has been the most consistant (although least experienced) of the 3 kickers.
Go Hawks!

It's clear KF isn't a fan of Mossbrucker. Murray beats him out, now Meyer.

He went with Murray against PSU because he was older, and didn't want to have a true freshman try and kick the biggest kick since '85. Mossbrucker really seemed to lose his confidence after that.

Has it ever been released what is wrong with Murray?

I think KF said a while back that it was a hip flexor?

Morehouse has a story on our kickers, and this comment on Murray:

...a former college punter who went through it told me a severe tear could take eight weeks and that’s with no exercise and, of course, no kicking.

Ferentz has said close the last two or three weeks, so it remains up in the air.

I have no direct knowledge of this, but reading between the lines I think the blocked extra point was the final straw. It sounded like the kickers were inconsistent in practice from the spring through fall camp. After that, KF probably just chose to give the new guy a shot at it.

I think this analysis is spot on.

I don't get why people keep saying the Mossbrucker's PAT was blocked and that's why he missed it. You shouldn't be kicking it that low to begin with, let alone the fact that he's about as inconsistent as you get. Stick with Meyer until Murray returns.

You're going to knock Mossbrucker for kicking it low and being inconsistent, and then in the same sentence cast your vote for Murray? Talk about semantics.

Murray is on a different level than Mossbrucker. I didn't say Murray as good either, but that's the way iowa's kicking game has been the last few years. At least Murray has made the ones that count.

Murray kicked the PSU field goal because he was older. That kick was well within Mossbrucker's range, and he had been used for all FG's under 40 yards, except for THAT one. Murray also missed a FG at OSU that was an absolute chip shot. I don't really see any difference between the two.

Meyer may or may not be any more consistent with accuracy, but his kicks look better, and he's got the leg. Accuracy can be learned through practice and experience. I say let him go and build for the future there.
