I voted PSU, only because they're next. I'm not trying to be one of those "WE'VE got to take it one game at a time" like it matters who I focus on, but that's really who I'm the most worried about. If the schedule was reversed, I'd vote Purdue. Last week, I'd have said I was more worried about PSU than Maryland, but that's different. Now, I see both PSU and PU as very tough games. Is it bad that I'm hoping for 1-1?

Purdue, because its a division game, and means more in Iowa's chances to win the division.

Although if Iowa loses either game, the chances to win the division are almost gone either way.

I don't know if scared is the right word, but I'll go with the next game is the scariest game.

Purdue is the more important game. There is no way to win the west while loosing to Purdue. But if you went with all the favorites in ESPN's FPI, you'd have the following results:

Iowa 7-2 (Wisconsin, PSU)
Wisconsin 6-3 (Michigan, PSU, Purdue)
Purdue 6-3 (Northwestern, Michigan St., Iowa)
Northwestern 6-3 (Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa)

I know their model lacks some personal touch like I don't believe Purdue will loose to Michigan St. this weekend with how injured Sparty is. But my point is there is still a path forward to Indy even with a loss to PSU. A loss to Purdue in two weeks would probably lead to Purdue winning the west and Brohm leaving the Boilermakers.

I voted PSU because of their QB. He isn't the same without Barkley but that kid is tougher than nails.

I think the Purdue game will be very tough to win but Iowa got thrown around a little bit last year but them. I think the OL is much improved over last year and will be dialed in. I'd be shocked if Purdue can do that again. I think Kirk and Brian are going to try to grind Purdue the same way they did Maryland.

I feel exactly the same way, and I am totally one of the 'fans can look as far ahead as they want' believers.
Also, for me, we need a win over a big time school this year. After 'The Special Teams Debacle that shall not be Named' this is Iowa's last chance in the regular season. (See what I did there Nebby trolls??)

Both are potential road bumps for sure. Both have Qbs playing well. PSU has a wild environment and Purdue has that stud freshman making catches and running all over the place against defensive secondaries. Sucks we gave that game away to Wisconsin. Iowa is going to have to play its best football to come out 2-0 in this stretch.

I voted Purdue because I worry about our defensive secondary getting lit up by that stud freshman.

Purdue. Not because they are necessarily better than Penn State, but because that will be our fourth road trip in five games. That's a tough stretch and would be for anyone.

I feel good about both, however, because I guarantee the players and coaches haven't forgotten last year's losses to Penn State and Purdue. Stanley, Fant, TJ, and BF in particular have progressed light years since that September Penn State game.

Win both - New Kirk narrative (BF) with a go for it philosophy.

Lose both - (close games) Old Kirk narrative still lives.

Iowa has recently been dominant, all cylinders. I am thinking 2-0.

Split them and we get the schizo New Kirk/Old Kirk dynamic.

I am afraid the pull of OKN "Old Kirk Narrative" will be strong as the days progress, and the game action begins.

The OKN = Pinstripe Baby (with 7 wins and half million bonus and "another" bowl invite)

NKN + BF = Good shot at Big Ten title game and more

I agree with your premise that a win against Purdue is an absolute must. Iowa needs to beat all remaining Western Division rivals. A win against PSU and a loss against Purdue, is the less desirable scenario here. It's not quite a consolation prize, but it puts Purdue in charge of it's own destiny.

Purdue is virtually in charge of their own destiny already. They loose tie breakers to Northwestern, but I don’t even think Fitzgerald beleives Northwestern is winning out.

Iowa was in their exact same shoes last year and we peed all over ourselves. I’m hoping Purdue does the same.

I also think Purdue has a few more Purdon'ts left in them. I would be shocked if they swept the remainder of their Big Ten schedule.
